Serving from the pastry case... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Vivalaqueens
At my new Tarbucks, we were informed that we have to start serving from the case. My TL, baristas and myself are horrified. Is this normal?! We do not have an air conditioned/refrigerated case. The food gets GROSS! We clean it thoroughly every single night but it just seems so unsanitary. When we tried to protest We were told it’s a new Starbucks standard. Whaaaaat.

I guess I just wanted to see if anyone else has been told this or just what their general thoughts are on this cause I’ve never done that at any of my starbucks (corporate or licensed, and as a shift supervisor)

That should make fake food for the case for less waste!!!

For my store (US corporate) we served from the case as a last resort ONLY if the customer was ok with it BEFORE this covid thing. My friends who work for licensed stores inside safeway have always served from the case and now with covid, the pastry case is strictly display~!

Tarbucks team lead here and it was the standard before covid to sell from the case. Since covid hit, we stopped and I still haven't told my team that we're starting it again. I find it gross beyond reason. I used to just to fill our case to make it look like we were selling from it.

In all honesty, we can't support the refilling of the case right case. Hours are way too tight.

pre-covid we served from the case (i’m in canada). paninis and breakfast sandwiches were display only.. all pastries/bagels we served from the case. they are stored on the shelf anyways.. what does refrigeration have to do with anything?

I just have seen that there are stores with refrigerated cases so I was just pointing out that mine wasn’t one of them. Very sorry if my post came off as rude in any way, serving from the case is just new to me so I was just taken back by the news!

ah i apologize for my ignorance. i have never heard of refrigerated pastry cases. it definitely helps with food waste when we can sell what’s displayed, but with covid it is probably not a good idea.

currently my store has little image signs instead of setting up the pastry case. it shows everything we have without wasting actual food. we also have a fruit fly problem that would only be worse with a pastry case

We were just told to do it as well and it’s disgusting!!! Our guests won’t buy the food from there either-they say never mind.

This used to be standard and required back in the day. Case had to be properly stocked and everything served was out of the case. I hated it and it was insanely embarrassing when fruit flies got in the case which was practically unavoidable no matter how hard we tried. Glad that’s no longer the standard! (At least in mine)

We used to serve from the case but we got a new sm who says we can’t and like I get it cuz if it’s been in there since 5am and it’s 8pm that’s just nasty
