PSA: dont fill up cups for cheaters (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by impasse602
Idk if it depends on region but the tik tok trend of just creating your white mocha drink by not paying full price is bs and we can get in lots of trouble if we fill it up
Ex. 2 shots white mocha milk, over ice in venti cup with foam comes out to half the price of the actual drink which is like 7.28 or something

And i see ppl giving a lot shit to baristas about filling it up and so i brought it up to my sm and he said we cant fill it up cause its cheating and honestly I couldn’t agree more you wanna pay half price for a venti then you only get half the cup simple as that.

I got a mobile order of I think it was 3 shots over ice in a venti with ex 2% , heavy cream and half n half, and light ice. I was like oh someone's gonna be upset :) I made it with a splash of both creamers I added more 2% than the rest because they wanted extra (total of 4oz) then I added a small amount of ice. The drink honestly looked bad but they did that themselves. I was a little anxious when I knew the person would be coming soon and when they did they were like "excuse me" and all I could think is oh boy here we go buuuut actually she told me "I wanted whip on this" so I looked back at the sticker cus I knew she didn't put that in her mobile order so I was like hmmm well it doesn't say on the sticker which is why I didn't put any then she got snarky and said well can I have some ??? Pushing the cup towards me and then I said well I cant take the drink back but I can give it to you on the side. She agreed and then I gave it to her but she looked pissed.

I’m so petty I used a short cup to measure things out 😅😅😅
ea374616 31 points 2y ago
I am here for this. I worked at a license store and we were not allowed to fill the gaps with product when people would get no ice. Best times of my life.
AvoFromCado 3 points 2y ago
I wish we were that bold... my manager would kill me if I started doing that
impasse602 [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Ima do this next time 😂
AvoFromCado 5 points 2y ago
Do ittt! When they say extra cream they get half a short cup unless they want me to charge them
Signifikantotter 35 points 2y ago
We use to call these Condiment bar lattes
lycorisette 30 points 2y ago
Ehh, this one’s a judgment call. You can decide for yourself imo -

I’m never gonna play drink cop for a megacorp - especially if the customer was chill.
RICKYOURPOISIN 15 points 2y ago
No offense but that’s why other baristas that do it the right way get shit on by customers. And you’re the barista they’ll say “well at X store they give me a full cup” about
lycorisette 14 points 2y ago
I said for chill customers. Again, i’m not defending the jerks.
RICKYOURPOISIN 3 points 2y ago
I get you I just mean when baristas do this it creates a consistency problem
sailorgrumpycat 23 points 2y ago
No it makes a "make the moment right" problem. If corporate is going to cram that slogan down our throats and then keep stores open during a pandemic I'm not going to sweat adding a little bit more milk to a drink to avoid a confrontation with a belligerent entitled shitty customer.
lycorisette 16 points 2y ago
Sounds like a megacorp problem
Twentysixounces 19 points 2y ago
Working for the company for over ten years, this will absolutely never change. There will always be cheap people. There will always be people who can’t afford Starbucks but pretend like they can. There will always be management that bends the knee to a “make it right” moment. There will always be posts about how it sucks that we can’t do anything about it. Starbucks over night could change the policy to ensure that their people dont have to deal with this and they haven’t, nor will they ever. It’s not worth your time to care. Just be grateful/and extra nice when the iced chai come through.
calvincouch911 -2 points 2y ago
Why do you guys care lol
Bryancreates 3 points 2y ago
It adds up. Sure it’s a big company and can afford all sorts of stuff, but the product loss eventually adds up for the managers, DM’s, etc. in the end. Once people start to tell other people about “cheats” it explodes exponentially. Also, it feels really bad for the customers who play by the rules and pay appropriately. There shouldn’t be two or three sets of rules for those who just order differently and have no shame.
humiddefy 3 points 2y ago
Good question. When I first started I used to just not give a shit because I didn't really care about the store's profits or the corporation, but over time I really started hating the customers and personally resenting the ones who were trying to pull one over on me. It gives a certain amount of satisfaction to deny them.
calvincouch911 1 points 2y ago
I mean yeah I feel that when I was the Starbucks manager at Barnes and noble (we called it our “cafe”) I definitely hated the customers, I guess it’s just been a while and I forgot that feeling lol
humiddefy 2 points 2y ago
Yeah they really poison a part of your soul after awhile lol. I used to be super nice and hook it up, and I'll still do that for really cool people and regulars, but for the most part I hate the general populace that comes up there. The best feeling in the world to me is to tell people we can't make something and for them to walk off disappointed.
julieCivil 14 points 2y ago
The only person you're benefitting is corporate Starbucks.
[deleted] -1 points 2y ago
Not really. It’s not like entitled Starbucks customers only frequent one Starbucks. It’s a chain, so it means if you get someone who frequently buys your product, they’ll take advantage of the multiple locations. It’s what gives chains an edge over mom and pops.

Allowing someone to cheat the menu puts it in the lap of other baristas who then are forced to deal with a belligerent customer. And if someone knows they can cheat, others will also cheat because they saw their friends do it. Look at how tik tok drinks spread. This consistent back and forth where customers aren’t reprimanded is what’s creating a problem.

Assholes are inevitable, but if you advertise that you’ll allow your employees to bend the rules or take abuse instead of confronting the problem, you’ll just attract more and more assholes who want to take their problems out on retail workers and know they’ll get away with it. It might be a mismanagement but the floor partners are the people who get stuck with the brunt of it.
julieCivil 8 points 2y ago
Of course I understand your point but Starbucks has lent authority to the culture of entitled customer and will always back the customer up over the employee. Happens time and time again. Wait until you tell the wrong customer "no" and you have your district manager breathing down your neck while you break your back for $13 an hour. This is not the hill I want to die on, honestly, there are way more important things than training a grown ass adult how to behave in a fast food restaurant.

Add water 😒
sir_ramen 6 points 2y ago
My store usually adds extra cube water, or extra atmosphere if it's hot.
gfxgore 11 points 2y ago
I mean If they’re a rude regular then I agree with you... but I personally always fill it up for people, offer people leftovers, and will make remake a drink with a smile if the customer’s nice about it. Starbucks is a big corporation with a lot of money, I’m not gonna waste my time getting mad over people trying to spend a little less on a treat that will make their day better.
humiddefy 2 points 2y ago
Booo Starbucks customers are scheming heaps of garbage!
lycorisette 2 points 2y ago
Yeah, more often than not the folks who do this have reasons to pinch their pennies. I’m team little-guy here too.
UlyNight94 9 points 2y ago
When I receive a Mobile order like that with light ice, I too leave it half empty xD Adding slightly extra milk but its always gonna be empty, but when they order it with regular their getting a block of ice in a venti cup from me, always. Sick of these "Hacks" to pay less for more, the world don't work that way. "Secret menu drinks, I don't mind them, but I hate them during a rush, still make it exactly the way they want it though even thought I get backed up 10+ drinks xD
lovelykla 5 points 2y ago
I started working at Starbucks in 2006 and left 2014 and my drink for years has been an iced venti espresso with three pumps of white mocha and cream. Sometimes it’s filled, sometimes it’s not, sometimes it’s stirred, sometimes it’s sitting in layers with bitter ass shots but whatever, it’s what I like to drink. I just take whatever the barista gives me and I don’t think it matters that we try to help corporate make more money when they don’t even offer a livable wage or consistent hours and scheduling.
rio8envy7 5 points 2y ago
I’m confused
madamebau 3 points 2y ago
Me too. Can anyone better explain this?
impasse602 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
Drink 1: venti iced white mocha with cold foam and extra caramel drizzzle is like $7.28

Drink 2: triple shot of espresso with 6 pumps of white mocha and 2%milk over ice with cold foam and drizzle come out to $4.15

If someone were to order drink 2 we’re technically not supposed to fill it up to the top. Makes sense?
rio8envy7 2 points 2y ago
Right. But you would fill up drink 1 because it’s topped with foam.
impasse602 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Correct
madamebau 1 points 2y ago
Ah gotcha. Yes thank you!
humiddefy 4 points 2y ago
Sometimes I will hook it up for the cheapskates if they're cool but if they're trying to get the Tiktok drink fuck them. They are paying full price.
kdotye 3 points 2y ago
A bunch of teenagers came in to get all 7 of their drinks as a grande in a venti and no ice so I put a grande cup next to the venti cups as a reference and when I handed them the drinks the look on their faces was priceless
Rav3ns315 2 points 2y ago
I always add “add dairy” when they try.
P_2_P 2 points 2y ago
Yeah!!! And I’m charging for steamed milk!
mrsnataliehooper 2 points 2y ago
Steamed and double blended buttons all day long baby
lelaluv 2 points 2y ago
i feel like a lot of partners view it as “it’s not my money, idc, i don’t want confrontation” which i get but it literally just enables our customers to be the way they are and then they get mad when someone doesn’t fill it all the way up when we’re not technically supposed to. like i don’t give a shit about giving someone extra milk for financial reasons lol but i feel like our tendency to bend rules for customers creates more entitlement. and it’s hard not to when you work for a company that kinda doesn’t let you enforce policy off the tone of ‘make the moment right’ so i get it, but it’s just frustrating because i refuse to be ‘the other starbucks’ and then put other baristas in my position where i’m getting yelled at for literally doing my job the way i’m supposed to.
Difficult-Insect 1 points 2y ago
Customer with a question: I prefer the brewed coffee over espresso. Am I looked at as a cheapskate if I order brewed coffee with white mocha and cream? Sometimes hot, sometimes iced. It just tastes better than a regular WCM... Also, is it any less of a pain in the ass for baristas to make? I'm not trying to either be a cheapskate or a PITA.
melodiic_ 2 points 2y ago
definitely not!! i'm a barista and i regularly recommend it to my customers as a way to enjoy their usual brewed coffee with all our flavors (and save a few bucks 😉)! it's also super easy for us to make, especially during rushes!
amuhh 2 points 2y ago
oh absolutely not! it’s not harder to make nor will we judge you for it, tbh these both sound quicker to make than a regular wcm or an iced one with sweet cream foam & all of that. a LOT of customers add white mocha to their regular hot or iced coffees with some milk or cream!
AvoFromCado 1 points 2y ago
No that’s really easy! And I don’t think your being cheap
cheven20 1 points 2y ago
I totally get the whole it’s a corporation part of why baristas don’t care but at the same time I don’t want to get yelled at because I do my job the way I was trained and the other people don’t give a fuck and do whatever. If you have a problem working for a corporation then find a small business coffee shop. There are plenty around.
