am i an annoying starbucks customer? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by redflipflopz
so i’m really self conscious about this but i go to the same Starbucks location pretty much every week day as it’s located on campus. i order the exact same thing every day, my drink isn’t elaborate or anything it’s just a cold brew with a non dairy milk. i tell them i have a dairy allergy before i order because i legitimately am allergic so a manager has to make it. i’ve always been kind of self conscious that they are judging me because i go every day and they have to get a manager to make it because of my allergy. honestly though, i just really like their drinks and i like getting their drinks every day.

Not annoying. But I think it's weird they get the manager to make it. Never seen that before.
subaruforesters 13 points 2y ago
Right? My manager is way more likely to mess up someone's drink with the wrong milk than anyone else I work with.
redflipflopz [OP] 1 points 2y ago
that’s what the specific store does for allergies.
Dorky_baby 10 points 2y ago
No, you explained your situation and I honestly don't care if people ask for specific people to make drinks, as long as its not pushy or creepy. I would just make to tip.
SithlordzomB 6 points 2y ago
I mean I’m totally understanding about the non dairy necessity but the having a specific person make it might be a little bit of a stretch. We wash our hands and our materials often and we don’t directly touch the milk so it usually shouldn’t be a problem for a normal barista to make it.

It could be cross contamination with the pitchers. They used to designate a dairy and non dairy pitcher for this reason a while ago, if I remember correctly. Now dairy is steamed with non dairy and sometimes the rinser doesn’t get everything (you always know when a matcha latte was made for this reason)

They might defer to the manager because they just need to get a freshly sanitized pitcher (like someone from a location I covered for needed a fresh pair of tongs for a gluten allergy. Everyone’s allergies/needs are different and some are more sensitive/easier to trigger than others). Peoples stores can vary also on allergy protocol

That’s very true. And I can understand that definitely! I had just never heard of a policy that required a completely different person to make a drink because shifts still make drinks in the stores I’ve worked in so it wouldn’t be much difference.
redflipflopz [OP] 2 points 2y ago
that’s their policy for allergies , i didn’t come up with it.
medicinexx 3 points 2y ago
unless you are insisting the specific manager make it, i don’t think you are being unreasonable. we are always washing our hands and utensils, anyone can make your drink
rio8envy7 2 points 2y ago
No. That’s actually the least annoying order. It’s errors they have a manager do it though.
BaristaBoi97 1 points 2y ago
Annoying is when you order vanilla sweet cream on something that has no business having it. This is just protecting yourself so you don’t get sick. I do agree that its weird that a manager makes it though

I haven’t seen anyone mention the Starbucks policy in regards to allergens. Regardless of who makes it (and I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that a manager comes out to make a drink), we can’t guarantee it will be free of whatever allergen you have. That’s why we discontinued use of a non-dairy blender, pitchers, etc.

“To our customers with allergies: We openly handle several allergens throughout our stores, including dairy, soy, tree nuts (e.g., almond, coconut, etc.), eggs, wheat and others.

While we take precautions to keep ingredients separate, we cannot guarantee that any of our beverages or foods are allergen free as we use shared equipment to store, prepare and serve them. Examples of shared equipment include the espresso machine steam wand, blender and pastry case. Please consult your doctor if you have questions about food allergies, so that you can make the decision that is right for you.”

Nah you are fine. 😁

Now if you got non dairy milk and then asked for whipped cream...... that's annoying as hell. And I'll usually be cussing the person out under my breath when I'm barring. But a non dairy drink is fine.
Serienmae 1 points 2y ago
To be honest, I doubt they much care (at least i wouldn't) and if they do its a personal problem. I wouldn't worry about it unless they say something while you're there to hear about it which I doubt they would regardless of if your present or not

Does your store ever get any new partners? I’ve seen *countless* drinks made with the wrong milks. Some of them almost, or do get handed out too. It can honestly be pretty easy for anyone to mess up.

So no OP, you are not annoying. Safety is #1 priority. I’m sorry if anyone makes you feel bad for specifying, but I actually appreciate it. Keeps me on my toes.

Also, there are some beverage components that contain dairy. Its always better to specify when you have an allergy. Don’t feel bad about that!
astivana 2 points 2y ago
Customers should definitely let us know about allergies!! Cold brew with a nondairy is a pretty low-risk drink but there’s still possibility. I once had an allergic reaction from cross-contamination that was caused by, at my best guess, the milk I’m allergic to getting spilled into an open container of the milk I actually used.

You make them get a manager every single time just to pour some almond milk on your cold brew? Yeah sorry that’s annoying as fuck. I get that you’re allergic but do you really think so little of the baristas that you don’t trust them to use the right kind of milk? Especially when you’ve told them you’re allergic? I would absolutely hate you if you came to my store regularly. And to be clear, you’re not annoying for ordering non dairy milk or even asking them to be careful because you’re allergic. That’s all fine. But demanding someone special do it is just weird and unnecessary.

I’m not sure that OP is demanding anything. The post isn’t clear. It could be a policy thing, especially since the license stores are so different from one another. Clearly I don’t know one way or another, but a little grace can go a long way, dude. Lighten up
redflipflopz [OP] 4 points 2y ago
i’m not, i just ask them to use non contaminated equipment
maidofpuns 3 points 2y ago
Don't ever feel bad for ensuring you won't die for a $5 cup of coffee. I work at a licensed location and previously worked for a corporate store. Even if the baristas find it annoying to have to track down their shift manager to make your drink, that's your store's specific policy and they clearly have it in place for a reason. I am MORE than happy to even go to the kitchen and flat-out wash (instead of just rinsing) a piece of cross-contaminated equipment, interrupting my drink sequence flow, in the middle of peak, to make damned sure that a customer's drink is as allergen-free as I can make it if that's what they need. Your safety is a thousand times more important than my inconvenience. That said, it is also your responsibility to inform food service workers of your allergy. (Not saying you don't know that, but there have definitely been times where--as allergen-conscious as I try to be!--I've gotten careless. If you ever have doubts about whether your drink/food was made the way you ordered it, please PLEASE double-check with your barista/server/etc). We have guests at our store who will have a medical emergency if they have too much caffeine, so we always make sure to very deliberately keep an eye on the espresso shots being pulled for their drinks. We have people with preferences for non-dairy milks and whether it's because they like the taste or because of an allergy, we do our very best to make their order correctly. I've been asked my own recommendation for non-dairy options by guests looking to try something new or maybe even because they have a sudden change in their dietary needs/restrictions. As long as you're clear about communicating what you need and you're nice about it, I could not care less what I have to do to ensure that you won't have a a medical emergency because of an easily preventable mistake. It is NEVER annoying to me to provide you a safely-consumable Starbucks drink.

thank you
[deleted] 2 points 2y ago
They’re not thou. They’re just asking for non dairy milk. The store is having this done/chooses to run itself this way. There’s no need to be hostile to the OP for the “crime” of having a dairy allergy
