Tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Global-Suggestion963
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do for tips? I heard my coworkers talking about declaring them online but I’m so confused. I’m in the us if that changes anything

Cash tips will not be changing at all so you don’t need to worry about that part. The only tips that are changing is the tips given through the mobile app. Instead of those tips being converted into cash tips every week, they will be going onto your paycheck every two weeks. Again, you will still be getting the cash tips from in store every week (or however often your store does tips). The MO&P tips are the only tips going directly into your pay check.

They are making the individual partners be responsible for declaring their cash tips if their tips are equal to or exceed $20 in a calendar month. If your tips are equal to or exceed $5 per week on average then you should declare them.

Let us say that I usually make $12 each week in tips. I would go on MPI, select the day/week that I’m declaring tips for, then type in $7 in the space provided. (My SM said we just subtract $5 from our original amount and put the remaining balance in the space. That’s where I got $7). I still keep my total $12 cash.
They’re doing this in order to stay in line with the guidelines set by the IRS for Tip Recording and Reporting.

If I were you, I would suggest asking your SM or SSV next time you collect your tips so they can show you how to get to the screen in MPI to declare them. They could probably explain better than I did.

I hope that all made sense and answered your question at least a little bit! I’ve only declared tips once so far so that is what I understood from it. I might be wrong and if I am I hope someone else corrects me on this. I’m not the greatest at explaining these things either, but I tried my best so I could help out a fellow green bean! :)

That’s more helpful then what I’ve already been told lol. Only curious how do you know how much to declare?

From what I understand, you take the total amount of cash tips from that week (in my example $12, but it could be any number), subtract $5, then put what is left over as the amount that you’re declaring (in example $7).

If your tips are below $5 per week or less than $20 monthly, I don’t think you need to declare them, but I’m not entirely sure about that.

Again, I would highly suggest asking a SSV or SM or even a fellow barista (if you’re comfortable) just in case. I, also, believe that there are other posts in this Starbucks subreddit that talk about the tips. So, if you needed any more information about it, you could maybe try searching for those. I tried to make sure my comments here were as accurate as possible as to not lead you astray by them. Hopefully, this all made sense! :)

Can you explain why the $5 is subtracted? I’m just confused at that part
NeverFadingLove 1 points 2y ago
To be honest, I’m not really sure. $5 was just the amount my SM told us as well as the weekly update from that week. My guess is that it’s something to do with tax for the IRS. Now that we’re inputting the cash tips, it is considered taxable income.

I’ve been trying to figure it out too. My manager will not tell me :/
