Will I be able to use my preferred name?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AntiSocial_Emo_Gamer
I’m not sure how to start this off since my first time posting.
Hi, I’m thinking about applying to Starbucks and a few places (but I’ll ask the other subreddits)in the summer and this thought just came into my mind the other day. Would I be able to apply with my preferred name or will I have to use my birth name?
Edit: In case anyone is curious, I’m Rory (She/They)

The application asks for your legal name and preferred name! At least it did for me, I applied a month and a half or so ago! In store, I would be extremely surprised if you were forced to go by your given name. It might be that legal documents will have to be in your given name but in store you should be able to go by your preferred name!

they print out the preferred on everything including phone number list, all schedules, etc. obviously preferred goes on your name tag as well. when you get hired you can even get pronoun pins from the store website (i never did but it’s available)

Thanks for letting me know that 😊💜

Ye, had some anime weeb who wanted their name as Hanji (from attack on titan) instead of her real name. In every document / schedule it showed Hanji instead of her real name.

That’s awesome 😎👍🏼

You have to put your legal name but you can enter a preferred name/nickname. All of my stuff (the schedule, my login, name tag etc) has my preferred name on it and my partners have never called me anything but! It is required to show ID for mark outs but you can use the digital card or a lot of partners really just understand as long as you’re not being sketch and you give them the name that will pop up. Good luck!

I think Starbucks in general is pretty good about addressing partners by preferred names! The only issue I see semi-frequently is people getting markouts and being asked for ID to confirm partner numbers - by policy, as long as you have your partner card in either physical or digital form you shouldn’t have to show your ID to anyone.
Good luck!

I don't work there anymore but when I did they let me use my middle name as that is what I go by. I think that if you tell them they will let you use it.

I applied with both my birth name and preferred name. The only thing that lists my birth name is tax and benefit stuff. My name tag, cash register login, and partner discount stuff all has my preferred name only. Also during my interview my now store manager only called me by my preferred name.

I work with several partners who go by preferred names ! Just talk to your SM about it- they should have no problem with it

You can put your preferred name on your application (separate from your legal name), but in my experience it was ignored and I had to push for my manager to use my preferred name. You can have your preferred name on most of the Starbucks systems like the schedule and register.

Thanks for letting me know and I’m sorry that happened to you

The only things my legal name are on are things it legally has to be on, like pay and tax stuff. Otherwise I was able to immediately apply and say my chosen name, and that’s what shows up on everything else. No one at my store even knows my legal name as far as I know.

Yes, you can use your preferred name for most starbucks things, however some government forms will still require your legal name like your W-2 and I-9
