Shift supervisors! I have a question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thegravesgirl47
Does anyone ever run there shifts by being main bar? My store is incredibly busy so I cannot imagine being in that planted position as I have to flex where I’m at constantly but just curious if anyone out there stays in positions like that and survives? My regular positions are CS, DTO, or warming. It’s just tough cause I love bar, I’m incredibly fast and will pop out as many drinks as I can without being in that set position but it’s hard to run a shift being in that position obviously. But not every store is the same! So was curious how some shifts run things?

I'm always CS if I'm play calling. I would never put myself in a planted position like that. Sometimes when I have a couple of hours of overlap with another supervisor I'll ask them to run the floor so I can bar for a bit.

I like that! Thank you 🙏

I do CS or front register. Your SM/DM will say the play caller has to be in the most flexible position.

I’m pretty sure if your play caller your not supposed to be planted. Typically I stay on customer support or bar support, sometimes dto if I have to. I try to only be planted for peoples 10s

Not supposed to be but when you’re constantly understaffed it always happens

Yeah it does happen

I only bar when it's super busy and I don't have strong bar partners which is rarely. otherwise I'm always cs

When I was a shift I used to. I found it actually easier than any other position because I could actively see DT wait times unlike on food where I got so focused on that I missed everything. When I was on CS I got too caught up in trying to make everything run smoothly and rushing around stocking and doing everything I couldn’t tell what was happening and was in the back too frequently. I sometimes did DTO but I couldn’t manage the cafe side of things there. So I chose main bar. It was right by the register and I had a line of sight to the DT window. It allowed me to see if cafe customers were waiting too long for food or drinks or tell someone else to jump on the second register or have someone help with food. I know I was supposed to be that flex but it was much easier for me to be planted and know if I had to send my other bar person to help that bar wouldn’t be that backed up (I know that sounds snobby but 2 years of peaks trained me to bar better than anyone else in the store). I know other shifts had problems running breaks but I just had the timing of when they had to be run down in my head and could usually run them no problem. I usually left bar about 30 minutes after peak to help run breaks and do shift stuff like the pull and take my lunch. At night I’d do bar for the first few hours and then when closing stuff needed to happy I went to do that. It worked for me and my manager was cool with it because DT times were lower.

I have done drive bar during morning peak before while key holding. I made sure that all of my tasks were in order and that we had a fast warmer and then went to town.

I find it hard to be on CS while keyholding, and I prefer DTO or drive bar because I am right there at the main choke points and can direct better. Warming is also a good option but our ovens are around the corner and another 15 feet away from DT so it’s hard to be able to watch the action.

I like to do warming when I play call because it’s not entirely consistent and you can kind of run around in between

i completely understand the loving bar and wanting to put yourself there but especially when it’s busy, you need to be in a support position where you can easily flex and help partners. it’s a lot easier to help in crisis when you can leave a support position than leaving bar during peak. when it’s slow it’s a different story and if you have less partners/are running breaks you can be bar for a couple minutes but during peak i would say it’s not appropriate

I will main bar if I am covering a break or having a barista do a cleaning task to give them a break from bar. During peak I will put myself in customer support, bar support, or warming so I can observe more of the action on the floor and make it easier to call plays.

I only ever put myself in a planted position when I’m covering a break. Usually I’ll do cs. I’ll still get bar and till time tho bc I’ll end up hoping on to support people

Hiii. Shift running a high volume drive thru peak 5 days a week here. I actually prefer to put myself on cold bar during peak, cs any other time. We're not super slammed on cbs, only on weekends but I have a support that I can swap out with. I am able to knock out drinks really quick, help warming and drive bar while keeping up with window times. Some will prefer dto but I find I am too distracted by taking orders and prepping them for dtr that I am not able to run the floor quite as well. CS during peak I'm not really with the floor, I almost feel like an outsider and I would prefer to be there with them to know when to flex the play.
