To union or not to union? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheFriendlyFeminist
Hi, just a humble 292** who’s wondering what are your feelings on the idea of starbucks employees unionizing? I know the official statement from Sbux is that they offer us so many benefits we don’t need a union. While I am very grateful at all the benefits sbux does offer, I also feel like there are some situations in my store and that I see in this thread that could definitely benefit from a workers union. Let me know your thoughts! (I previously worked under a union and loved it, so I might be biased.)

If we don't "need" a union because you're already giving us a fair deal, why would you be worried about us unionizing? Maybe it's because you might not actually be giving us what were worth? 🧐

Even just having union representation would improve working conditions. Tho my preference is for a militant union that's not afraid to take direct action whenever there are grievances. And liberally strike for better conditions. So I'm obviously not a fan of contracts no strike clauses or any labor peace lol. My philosophy is if our bosses can punish us whenever they want, we should hit them where it hurts as much as we can.

One of the biggest problem I found is that conditions are based on SM and DM. So discrimination is really easy for management to sweep under the rug with write ups and bullying people out. A good contract would have progressive discipline be necessary where the burden of proof is on management. So, you can't have a bs write up where the manager says they "saw something" that didn't even happen and then it's used against you in later discipline.

Weingarten rights (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weingarten_Rights) are also really helpful when management attempts to discipline workers since you get backup from the union and makes management think twice about fucking with someone. Obv you can do that by yourself, and i definitely have to try to build a culture of solidarity. But it's not legally protected to have another worker be a witness in non union shops. which means that you can be wrote up or fired for that if you go too hard.

Sbucks saying there's no need for a union kind of confirms that one should be explored. Never trust a corporate entity to protect the interests of the workers.

Any company that has an official statement ready to go about how “there’s no need for you guys to unionize” is indirectly admitting that they’re aware of the situation in their stores and that a union is needed.

All of the benefits could be abolished at the drop of a dime without a union. Even with the benefits, it doesn’t account for unlivable wages and not having a say in decisions that affect us. We should definitely have one, and at this point it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of how.

I would absolutely love a union. One of our biggest obstacles is that I think a lot of baristas are conditioned to like the company because of benefits. A lot of them mistake these benefits and think that the corporation actually cares about us. Yet, we’re all risking our lives to make the big bosses richer in this pandemic and corporate Starbucks isn’t going back to in person work until Fall. How can they really care about us?

No need to union. Talk to your managers if you have an issue. You also know you have to pay to be in a union so what’s the point of paying more money when you’re complaining about not getting paid enough?

I do know how unions work, as I said in my post, I have been a part of one. The dues are relatively small, I think for UCFW it was $52 for the year. One example I can give you where talking to your manager doesn’t work. My manager likes to schedule us for 5.75 hour shifts constantly, and i don’t know what it’s like in other states, but in my state, that means you only get one 10 minute break. However, when this is a closing shift, it often goes well over 6 hours (bc closing takes longer sometimes), and you still only got the one break. My manager is well aware of this and doesn’t care, only tells us we should be closing faster, but then also tells us we need to be doing more and more thorough cleans on close. So in this case, a union rep would be helpful I feel like.

It’s like that here too and the 5.75 is annoying but its giving you the max amount of hours before you have to take a half. And I get it closing and it sucks.
Anxious_Database 2 points 2y ago
Yeah that’s exactly the problem. SMs should not be giving partners the max amount of hours without requiring a half when they know for a fact that closers never get out on time, so they end up working 6 or more hours without getting their legally required meal break.

Just wondering, what if the manager and upper management refuse to acknowledge the issue after you talk to them? Or if management is the problem (like if a manager is unfairly disciplining you and the DM refuses to belive you)
