I’m so tired of customers arguing with me about wearing a mask...(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by birdiefjord
I was on cafe bar and just got over a huuuuuge string of mobile orders, but cafe orders were still kind of going steady. I noticed a lady walk in and I was about to ask if she had a mobile...until I noticed she had no mask on. Now, I usually give people the benefit of the doubt because we have a lot of customers who genuinely forget to put their masks on since they’re usually in a rush. I go and ask:
“Hi! I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to please put your mask on.”
Lady kind of looks at me, then smiles and says “I can’t wear a mask. I have a medical condition. I don’t have COVID :)” My head was going a million miles a minute so I was like FIND HER MOBILE QUICKLY, but it turns out it was the next drink in my queue so I say:
“I’m about to make your drink right now, but I’m going to have to ask you to step outside to our patio for a minute or 2 and I’ll have a barista hand it out to you!” I gave her the most PERFECT and EASY option and she goes:
“Why? The governor’s mandate (NC) says I don’t have to wear a mask because of my medical condition. Is Starbucks above the governor’s mandate? YOU’RE DISCRIMINATING AGAINST MY MEDICAL CONDITION” 🙃🙃🙃
I was pretty calm and collected despite what was happening. I just repeated, “All I’m asking, is for you to stand outside, FOR 2 MINUTES, and your drink will be handed out to you :)”
She kinda just stared at me for a second and said “cAn I gEt A rEfUnD?”
I fucking hate people like this because they can LITERALLY just go through the drive thru. These same people always say the SAME thing like they just read of a script lmao. What’s hilarious is that in that entire time she was arguing with me, her drink would have been done and she would have been long gone from my store. 🙃

Yes! We have to deal with this annoying stuff all the time here in FL. people don’t understand that private property has their own rules!!! You can wear whatever you want outside but you have to dress a certain way for certain establishments and it was barely a problem before masks came into play. Now adults are acting like children

Everyone who’s about “corporations are people” and “big government is evil” are all now expecting private companies to bend to big government when they get slapped with a pandemic version of “no shirt, no shoes, no service” and it makes me want to scream.
Either have the government meddle in private companies or don’t. The whole “pick and choose” is so annoying

We literally have a sign on our front door that says they have to wear a mask over their mouth and nose in order to enter. I usually point that out and wait for them to try to respond :)

I tell them simply "Wait outside or put your mask on" if they want a refund "You just wear a mask to be in the building so either put one or leave."
thankfully my sm has our backs with the mask requirements.

"You are correct that you don't have to wear a mask, but if you can't wear a mask then you can't be inside."

We have a homeless guy that comes in and refuses to wear a mask. We’ve told him constantly that he has to wear a mask or he can’t be here and he’ll still refuse and ask for free coffee. We used to give him a small coffee, but it’s gotten to the point where we just straight up refuse him service. I feel like it’s gonna get to the point where he’s gonna end up being banned.

>her drink would have been done and she would have been long gone from my store
this. this right here is what annoys the SHIT out of me.
all this time you spent arguing with me and you could've had your order taken and finished. why do people have to be like this

I swear people are just seeing what they can get away with. Half the time we ask people if they have a mask they pull it out of their pocket and put it under their chin. The other day we had a café full of 30 people waiting for their drinks and a guy decided to get on his soapbox about how vaccines don’t work and covid is a government ploy.

We don’t have much mask drama here (it’s mandatory to get into any public space) but we have a law that makes us have a limit as to how many clients can be in the store - ours is 5. Every day we get customers angry and even throwing fits because they’re told to wait outside.

YES! Fellow NC barista here. And then they usually try to sit even though EVERY TABLE says it’s closed. And say “oh I’m only waiting on my coffee 😋”

Happens all the time at my store! NC too

You could have just as easily been the one who allowed her to be medically exempt which she has every right to under HIPA and the drink would have been finished faster than your confrontation. Why should she have to wait outside for her drink, that’s like segregating somebody since they’re medically exempt.

Here’s the thing. We have an option for those customers who can’t wear a mask, which is going to the drive thru. My district currently does not allow ANY customer to be in our lobbies without a mask on. If she doesn’t like it, she can easily call corporate. I don’t give a fuck.
Also, I never asked what her medical condition was. I was in no way violating HIPAA by asking her to wait outside. Comparing this incident to segregation as well couldn’t be anymore wrong.
Ridiculouslyrampant3 points2y ago
Not to mention she absolutely didn’t have a medical condition- I find the people banging on about it are the ones who use it as an excuse/those with real issues are super cautious.
And as someone [customer] in NC props to your district for being strict, and props to you upholding the policy!
Slapshot382-1 points2y ago
She said she had a medical condition and she was exempt, then you kick her outside, I understand it’s corporate policy but sounds like segregation to me. Those with masks and hothouse without.
See the division happening by now at least?

HIPAA is patient/medical professional confidentiality.... nothing to do with disabilities. 🤣
