question for shift leads 🙃(self.starbucksbaristas)

how do you decide each partners position on the floor? does your manager tell you who to put where? are there meetings or discussions about who should not be placed somewhere or should not be speaking to customers? 🤷🏼♀️

In my store we just use our best judgement. During peak or busy times, my sm always said “put your aces in their places” so I put people who are good with drinks on bar, my baristas with really good people skills on dto and window, and then usually newer partners on warming or front register. When it’s really slow I try to switch it up so new partners or partners who are weak on bar can be on bar and get better, which also gives a break to the people who were on bar through peak

Cool thank you! I’ve been working there 3-4 months now and have only been on bar a handful of times so I was just wondering if there was a standard Starbucks reason or something I never got placed there to begin with. I’ve been told it’s cause I’m good with customers but I start to doubt like maybe they think I’m not capable of keeping up on bar or something 👵🏼🥺

Sometimes I just place people out of habit, honestly. I'm doing 14 things in my head and that just makes it so I don't have to think. It also means I've put 3 people on dto within 5 minutes tho.

That’s fair

I don’t want to sound mean, but if you’ve only been there 3-4 months and have only been on bar a few times, you couldn’t be any good yet. No one has given you a chance to learn! Bar takes time.

yeah for sure that’s why I was wondering if something about me made them say like nah we’re keeping her off bar lol

Nah it’s just as simple as if you have good bar people it’s easier to just keep them there. Not a knock against you. But you could ask to be there more. I would. You don’t want to end up there by accident one day and get run over.

Morning shift here! I put a strong person on warming, drive bar, and DTO. (Usually the warming turns out to be me as we run a 6 man during peak). Then I trickle in people. As long as my 3 strong spots are secured I try to bounce around, but usually a newer partner will be in the window or up front. Once peak is over I flex the strong people to get lunches and give the new people a chance to in the stronger spots to see how they do. If they do well, I’ll have them try cafe bar during a peak and see how far they can keep going before I see stress. I personally try to gear up new people to be window->front->dto-> bar depending on their speed. The better you multitask the faster I’m more likely to move you to a new spot during peak. Hope that helps!

It does thank you!

My manager plays not role in play calling. I base it off of strengths and experience mostly, but I’ll be switching people around all day because I really do believe everybody needs to be good at every position. We don’t have meetings period lol although we need to about lots of other things. Everybody should be speaking to customers! I feel like there’s more insight to be had here.
