Don’t be afraid to ask your SM for extra training time. If you don’t think you’re ready to be on bar and need more guidance then that’s what you need. No shame in asking. As far as the training goes it’s not a corporate thing but a when your manager scheduled your training thing. Usually they schedule training around the availability of both the trainer and trainee.

the availability part is what’s crazy though bevause i requested specifically nights off and that is all she gave me because the trainer had nights only, but there were two other trainers that could have trained me in the morning ? it was so odd. thank you for the advice i needed to hear that haha

You need like 18 hours of training. That’s what SMs are given. So yeah..3 days at 4-4.5..? hours should’ve covered basics. You’ll probably still be an extra body on the floor or kept on something simple like warming, don’t be scared to ask your SM what her plan is for you for this week. Good luck!

Maybe the other trainers had trainees as well? Idk. I understand it’s frustrating and I feel like 3 days worth of training isn’t enough.

Of course i get it. If you ever need anything don’t be afraid to ask your partners and SM for anything. No question is dumb and we all need help sometimes.

In my experience that may be because mornings are even busier. When I had a trainee I specifically told my manager I wanted to train her in the 3-7pm range, as it's easier to be less of a burden when working on the floor. I also know my manager alternates trainers due to the fact that we get bonuses for training, so obviously it feels unfair if one person gets multiple trainees in a row.

That being said, if you don't feel prepared then make sure to express that to your manager and your ssvs. They can and will work with you. And do understand that everyone knows you're new, they don't expect you to be a bar god day 1. You definitely should not worry about that at all

i'm thinking that they were training you at night because the store is probably less busy than in the morning. for some trainers, it's really hard to train and focus on the learning when there's eight million drinks being made and people running around everywhere. the best advice i can give you is to take it slowly and always ask for help if you need it!!! also use the new person card as long as you can, most of the time customers will be patient with you :)

It took a while for me to get any bar time because I got hired during the start of busy season. When my store closed for COVID related reasons for two weeks, they had me and a couple other people prep the store for reopening and we got more in-depth bar training. It took a while for me to be put on bar at all. For the first few months I was CS, DTO/DTR only.

Some stores are like that. I worked at three in my time as a partner. The first one was a shit show, the second was fine, and the third was an abomination with a heartless manager. Asking never hurts, but I did what you're doing. Three days, or maybe it was two? Then I was on bar.

I got to "third and final day of training" and just wtf starbucks. I got two full weeks of training smh no wonder all the new people feel like they're drowning.

Read the rest of your post and you're asking if this is normal. Yeah, unfortunately this is the new normal and it fucking SUCKS. There's literally no way to learn everything you need to know in three days. Some stores don't even schedule trainees and trainer for training time. The last store I trained baby beans at would schedule trainer and bean as regular floor coverage, meaning if we went to the back to review recipe cards or other resources, the floor was two people short.

It's absurd, but it's just another example of how bad training and high turnover is cheaper for companies now than actually investing in creating good employees.

Also, please do ask your SM for more training time. Ask if you can partner with an experienced bar person so you can take the time to practice and build confidence without dragging down the team and creating a hugely stressful situation for everyone involved. If your SM is a reasonable person, they'll at least understand so it's worth asking.

Just be sure to phrase it in a way that makes it beneficial to the store to give you more training hours. Building confidence so you can be more efficient and a better team member, that sort of thing.

just takes time man. I didn’t learn bar really until like 3 months in, because i Started closing and i would practice during the down time. Just master whatever they have you do. If you’re on register everyday, do. the best you can and customer connect. They should have people in their strong spots when it’s busy. Even if they throw you on bar, itll be hard but you’ll pick it up with repetition. Remember, you’re making coffee and frappes, the stakes aren’t too high so just don’t stress too much :)

No one will expect you to "hop right in". Its pretty standard to get through the computer training and then get put on the floor, just ask questions when you have them and you learn as you go.

Ours was bad. I was trained mornings and it consisted of my SM throwing fits because night did not clean well enough. I spent most of my training cleaning and then when training was over they were like "why don't you feel confident you had training?" I really wanted to make Starbucks work so bad but I had the worst panic attack I had in years about 3 days ago and quit. I know my team needed me but everytime I thought about work I would throw up. I really wanted to make it work.

Could be worse could get hired right when holiday starts and have to learn 3 roles in 4 weeks (Barista, SSV, Holiday Drinks) it takes time I always asked for feedback or ways to improve as if you do something wrong and it goes uncorrected then you will keep on doing it.

Yes that’s how it was for me
