Considering quitting...? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by oatmeal_bro
I was just told our café seating is probably opening next month and I'm floored. Is anyone else super shocked and alarmed by this? Most of us baristas aren't even qualified to get the vaccine yet and now we'll be filling our stores with maskless people who will have every right to hang out for hours on end, talking and laughing and coughing close to our bar. I get pretty pissed at people that have trouble wearing masks correctly and I'm always the first to confront them- it's all worth it to keep me and my fellow partners safe. But trying to feel safe when our own company is working against us is gonna be pretty damn difficult. Customers will forget to put their mask on when walking from their table to the bathroom. And they won't bother putting it on to "quickly" throw something in the trash. They're gonna give even less shits than before now that cafe seating is opening. Sorry but I'm pretty irked by this decision

Yup. Im highly considering throwing in my two weeks early (I'm leaving in may anyway for a summer job) if they open the cafe. No one respects our closed cafe, so they sure as shit are not going to respect our open cafe. They will sit there for hours, finish half a drink, not wear a mask, and make a goddamn mess.

same! i'm considering just not asking people to put on masks anymore. after hearing what happened to the barista in texas, it's not worth my life

been desperately searching for a job that would pay enough/maybe have benefits too

What happened to the barista in Texas ??!
lemonjuicepulp 2 points 2y ago
I had read that a customer threatened to grab his gun out his car for being told to wear a mask, but I looked it up and can’t find anything about it anymore so?? Now I don’t know sorry for the misinformation
hmrw5807 1 points 2y ago
i’m curious too!!
lemonjuicepulp 1 points 2y ago
I read that there was an incident where a man threatened to grab his gun on a barista for being told to wear a mask, but upon looking it up again I can’t seem to find anything that happened this year. So, my bad for the misinformation and fear mongering
stardreamer00 2 points 2y ago
I ask people ALL the time to put on a mask or hand them one
angryairheadaries 8 points 2y ago
the governor in the state i live in just lifted some of the mask restrictions and we're already having people throw it in our faces when we ask them to put one on, so i'm also dreading when this next step will take place...

i don't blame you for wanting to quit. you have to do what's best for you and if you don't feel safe, then i say good on you for prioritizing your health and safety over a job that makes you feel unsafe
bigmacwithnobeef 6 points 2y ago
Whenever we bring it up to my manager, she tells us that they’re basing it off of “partner feedback” and how we feel.... sooooo if we keep pushing back, hopefully they’ll listen?
plushiequeenaspen 6 points 2y ago
Surprised? Not at all.

Concerned for baristas who have to deal with this? Absolutely.

Best of luck to you. If you can find another job that respects your health and safety and pays the bills, then go for it. Starbucks has shown over the last year that they don't deserve your loyalty anymore.

I don’t know where your manager got that idea but there’s been no communication about opening cafes again and there has been corporate wide communication that masks will continue to be enforced for the foreseeable future. Sounds like manager is speculating which they shouldn’t be doing.

Edit: take a look at today’s weekly update which explicitly states we will continue requiring masks and continue to pause indoor seating.

i’ve been told by my entire management team ( shifts and up ) that our cafe will be opening soon as well
NOTcreative- 3 points 2y ago
Shifts are probably just mimicking SM. If you have concerns, I encourage you to reach out to your DM
BabyXxXBlue 2 points 2y ago
my DM is of no help as she’s apparently stupid , she won’t even tell my SM to wear her mask right when she visits my store . i’ve started taking pictures of my SM not wearing it ( dating and timing ) to send to corporate .
NOTcreative- 3 points 2y ago
Give PCC a call and inform them management isn’t following covid guidelines. They take it very seriously.
BabyXxXBlue 2 points 2y ago
i felt this , i got in trouble for politely asking a customer to keep their mask over their nose while i was at DTO . my SM came to me and said “ we’re not allowed to ask or yell that people need to be wearing it because of “ confrontation “ , instead tell your shift and they’ll get off the floor and tell them . “ i think it’s utterly ridiculous because our store is already so busy and you want someone to leave the floor to do something i can do from my position . i told her “ i’ll respect that rule because it’s a rule but it’s absolutely ridiculous and enabling to those who don’t listen anyway . “ her only response was “ what if it’s an elderly grandma ? you wouldn’t want to embarrass her would you ? “ to which i said “ yes i absolutely do . i want people to be aware of their actions and there is absolutely no exceptions . “ i’m over having to enable these adults who can’t follow one fucking rule . she told me “ it’s not fair that people in the drive thru don’t wear one and you’re telling someone across the store . “ to which i just said “ if i was allowed to tell those people in their car to wear one i would . it’s ridiculous i’m risking my life because someone wants a stupid ass Venti Iced White Mocha with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam and Extra Caramel Drizzle and they won’t even wear their mask . “

don’t know how i didn’t get in trouble but i’m sure my store manager knows exactly that i hate her and this bs enabling that starbucks does .

That damn Tik tok white mocha! 🤬 stay strong, you are definitely in the right and know that not every leader in this company is that spineless. My district is changing a lot and our DM supports our need to be safe as well. PCC is always an option as well if you guys aren’t getting enough support from management. You are a badass partner for sticking to your guns! 🤩
snowflakenecklace 2 points 2y ago
and we still won't have enough staff to keep everything clean. can't wait!!! /s

should you even be working if you are that concerned about getting covid
Isaac_Ingram 12 points 2y ago
Not working because you don't want to get COVID is not an option for a lot of people, since most people have bills to pay. I would argue that working is perfectly safe when proper precautions are taken, such as requiring customers to wear a mask and limiting your contact with them.
chickiegirl01 -14 points 2y ago
if starbucks thought it was too unsafe for people to dine inside then they wouldn’t allow people to do it. unless you’re immunocompromised or over 65+ you’re not at risk. the vaccine is rolling out very quickly and restaurant workers are eligible next.
Isaac_Ingram 8 points 2y ago
Anyone can be at risk even if they are immunocompromised or over the age of 65. I know people who have died from COVID regardless of the fact that they met neither of those criteria.

I appreciate Starbuck's response to COVID, although I personally think their decision to open cafe seating is too early.

The vaccines are rolling out very quickly in the US. However, it has been a struggle to get one. Your ability to receive a vaccine depends completely on your state, since states have been tasked with vaccine distribution. I'm pretty sure that "all people who work" is the next phase in my state, not "restaurant workers". Either way, getting a vaccine when everyone else in the restaurant industry is also trying to get one is going to be a slow process. It has taken months to distribute vaccinations to health care workers and teachers (the first two phases in my state). Some haven't even received them yet. Vaccinating the entire restaurant industry is going to take a very long time.

In my state we are not next on the list but that’s besides the point. Starbucks policy is that people wear masks , the issue is we don’t have the labor to constantly hen after our customers to get them to follow best practices. Starbucks is still a for profit corporation that has covered its butt in regards to COVID safety procedures. Just because Starbucks does better than most places doesn’t make it still the safest practices possible. Starbucks workers are still taking a risk every day they come into work. Even people that fall under the not at risk for dying are still at risk for long term health issues. You don’t get to gatekeep peoples fear of getting sick vs their desire to put food on the table and keep their bills paid. The situation sucks for millions of Americans that have no choice but to chance getting COVID so they can live. Have some empathy.
Slapshot382 -11 points 2y ago
Go work somewhere else then. I hate wearing a mask and have to do it through 8 hour shifts. Plenty of other places to work, or not work if you’re afraid. It’s been over a year with the dining room basically shut down, time to open up.
