Low Vision/visually impaired baristas (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m visually impaired and have low vision. What are some of the accommodations you guys have (that you’re comfortable sharing)? I’m genuinely curious what other baristas with this problem do to make things easier for them.

I don’t have low vision but I have lattice degeneration (long story short you go blind eventually). I’ve had 3 laser surgeries so far (no, not lasik, my eyes are too far gone for that) and I’m not losing eyesight any more at the moment... but now I’m light sensitive. I have to wear sunglasses or my eyes will get sunburnt.

That’s right. The pain, the heat, the peeling, all in my eyes.

At first everyone thought I was kinda faking it and kept stocking me in the window until one day my manager told me I couldn’t really wear them and I, knowing where this was going, proceeded to listen and then everyone knew I wasn’t kidding. Which sucks, but now they know.

I wear sunglasses until I feel safe enough to take them off, but usually they stay on the whole time the suns out. But I try not to make a big deal out of it cus, someone will always have it worse than me and I can still see. But I will fight to wear them or I will leave, it’s not worth the pain

My eyes are sensitive to light too and I have to have sunglasses on DT too. They don’t get sunburned (which sounds sooo painful) but I have trouble seeing phone screens with the sun glare.

May I ask how bad your vision is? I have lattice problems as well, recently diagnosed. Had the eyeball jelly detach in my left eye, but lucky it 'healed' but I am nonstop worried about a real detachment/hole

I’ve had 7 holes in the left eye and 3 in the right. I’m not quite sure about the “jelly” you’re referring to 😶

vitreous detachment. It was described to me as the "jelly" separating from the inside of the eye. Had that in my left eye, was seeing flashes, now have nonstop floaters. And the "sides" are thinning :/

Ohhh interesting! Thankfully I haven’t had a detachment yet but my mother has. Sometimes I can feel the fluid in my eye roll up around the scar tissue and it looks like a white orb but that’s if I’m really swinging my head around 🥲

We had to jump through a lot of hoops with corporate, but we got a larger touchscreen for one of our partners. It is between the front registers and mirrors one of them. Not sure how much it gets used, but it's an accommodation nonetheless.

Like a larger pos? That’s kind of cool actually. I didn’t know that was possible. I don’t have any issues with pos I just have trouble seeing the DT order screen. The white/green/red on black and the print size is just hard to see.

Yeah, we have a larger POS screen. I think it is like 20" diagonal or something. It's a much larger viewing area.

I don't know about another screen in drive-thru, but per ADA, the company is supposed to make reasonable accommodations. There's probably a compliance officer or something within HR/PRC that you can talk to and see if there's some solutions you can implement.

Yeah I saw that. I don’t think it’s something I need though. Like I can see most things and I work at Starbucks so I know what we have but I’m just curious what tools other people with the same or similar issue use to help them when working. Like I have trouble seeing the DT board so I don’t bump or keep track of what’s coming up because I use the pos screen instead.
