What have you learned while working in your job that you probably would not have learned otherwise? (self.starbucksbaristas)

people will waste their money on anything.. complain about anything... never pay attention when you would expect them to and generally they don’t even know what they’re ordering.

does this have espresso in it? “Yes, sir,” so, does that mean there’s caffeine?

can you add cream to my coffee, but make it hot? “Sure, we can steam some half and half for that,” “no, I don’t want it steamed. Just make it hot.”

what do you mean I should have paid attention when I was ordering? Remake it the way you should have known I wanted it

Had someone yesterday order an iced coffee with white mocha and extra caramel drizzle. When I asked them if they still wanted classic in it they proceeded to argue with me saying it shouldn’t have classic in the first place and that they just wanted an iced coffee with white mocha. Eventually realized they just wanted a regular iced white mocha, not iced coffee.

The importance of saying no and setting boundaries. When I was younger I'd run myself into the ground because I couldn't say no. I once worked 10pm-8am every single night for two months. Nowadays I'm just like naw dawg picking up that shift doesn't vibe with me.

It’s basic, but making/drinking coffee. If I never became a barista, I prob would’ve been drinking caramel cappuccinos my whole life wondering why half the cup was empty.

How much effort it takes to make these drinks. Honestly. I know it doesn’t take much actual time but the effort....the training, the memorization, the hand eye coordination, the communication. It takes so much more than any customer realizes unless they’ve been behind the bar.

I wanted to say that some people will be unhappy no matter what but I learned that way before Starbucks lol

Honestly, multitasking. I’m 19 and I had always been a very bad multitasker and bad at time management, but from being on drive bar and solo driving during peak early in my starbucks career, and now as an SSV having to do those things and run the floor and get tasks done, I have become very good at time management, which bleeds into my personal live for a net positive ;)!
