I personally love Starbucks and have been waiting to apply since I was 13. My time has finally come. How do I prepare for an interview? What should I expect as a barista if Im hired?

I can’t speak to the interview process since it’s been years for me, but I did want to drop this advice about being new — it may seem overwhelming at first but I promise there is a day where it feels like everything just clicks into place. Suddenly you know all! And there are several different roles you can take on at the store. You will likely be started out on a cash register or warming pastries and sandwiches. If there’s a role you want to try, be vocal about that to your supervisors! A lot of times they will be so busy that they will forget to take the time to let newbies learn. But they will like if you show the initiative. Good luck!

So not everybody gets to make drinks?
amy_2014 7 points 2y ago
In time you will, but that is *likely* not where you will be placed right away because making drinks is a more skilled role. There are several roles to fill and some of those are better suited for beginners - for instance, you learn a lot about what goes into a drink by taking orders and putting that info into the computer :) But like I said, don’t be afraid to ask to try out different roles if you aren’t placed in them without asking

Edit: I want to be clear that while I am referring to the different positions as “roles,” all of these are part of being a barista

It’s going to take a while for you to get good at barring, especially if this is your first job (and that’s okay and totally normal!) therefore you likely won’t be placed on bar very often to start out or if it gets busy they’ll need to place the stronger partners on bar. Even after you get good at bar, it’s still a standard retail job so you’ll have to work several other positions including register, warming, support (restocking/prepping) and all that. You’ll probably do more of those type positions at first. So yes, everyone does get to make drinks at some point, but no, not everyone is making drinks and not everyone is strong enough on bar to be placed on bar often.
