We're not workers, we're partner's 🤭 (i.redd.it)

Ok I’m new and I keep hearing this super positive stuff, seems like a meme, especially when I’m noting a couple red flags. Can someone please warn me of stuff you wish you were warned of?

Edit: lol 29 likes, I feel like I’m gonna get caught talking 👀👀

Edit of my edit: i mentioned the red flags I’ve noticed with management, and I deleted them because I learned today that my coworkers love this sub, and I like my co workers, but I’m paranoid.
Beingme4me 62 points 2y ago
I'd say bad management is the problem and I'd say usually why a work environment is either good or bad is because of how management handles things.
Personally I've had a great time working with Starbucks (I've been here a year) and it's because I've had good management that made me feel like a partner and not just called one.
deeciphered 6 points 2y ago
I’ve been here two months and so far my store has been great I definitely agree the a management thing more than a company thing. With my past jobs it wasn’t necessarily the work that was bad but the way it was run by our managers. I think that is a large part of why there are such a wide range of attitudes regarding working here.

At my old job my manager would frequently switch my shifts when I was there and then lie to me and tell me that it had always been my shift, that I must have read it wrong and that they would *never* assign the shift I “thought I had” even though that was the shift I had the rest of the week. Which was so incredibly difficult because I am always volunteering to stay late or pick up shifts so if they’d asked I almost certainly would have. I am so sorry that they did that to you.
That definitely seems like reoccurring issues with the manager to me more than a systematic issue with Starbucks I’m itself but then again I’m still relatively new.

Put your foot down, they get away with shit because no one puts their foot down.
zerohydrogen -20 points 2y ago
I put my foot down the second week and they made yo allegations against me which were all dropped. Mainly i wanted my promised paid break so i could pee and wash up. Doing so made the team gang up on me, since i was the only man they said i was a bully who sexually harassed then.

There was no evidence, each girl had the story completely different and everything was dropped.

They also hated me for saying only fans is not the best career choice even though that's what 80% of you talk about doing when you turn 18. They hated that i recommended school over porn. Said i was hating women. Like I'm the KKK for wanting girls to go to school instead of strip.

Welcome to Starbucks where politics and teenagers run the show.
randomyucky 18 points 2y ago
Bringing up OF and strippers at work can definitely be classified as sexual harassment, especially if you are shaming them though. Doesn't seem like you got reported just for being a man imo.
Honey_Ginger [OP] 12 points 2y ago
Lol, i have an OF bro, i pay my school like that because my shit minimum wage can barely pay food and rent 👍
dodofishman 5 points 2y ago
What you said wrt OF was straight up bad taste and rude af. To you, it felt like you were offering wisdom, but to everyone else it feels misogynistic. Girls wouldn't be waiting for the moment they turn 18 to make an OF if there wasn't a thirsty audience ready to commodify them. Working a service job pays way less and you still get harassed. I couldn't do it (it actually takes a lot of work lol) but I don't blame them.
sleppybebble 4 points 2y ago
There's nothing political about just being a douche
iWantToBeARealBoy 17 points 2y ago
Honestly this sounds like every single store I’ve worked at except one. They aren’t taking COVID seriously at all and corporate doesn’t care about us, they care about profit. I‘ve been with the company for 3 years, a shift for half of that time, and I’m finally transitioning to my new job and holy shit, I almost didn’t realize how horrible Starbucks really is.
zerohydrogen 12 points 2y ago
No one washes their hands because they lose hours for being slow.

Starbucks pays us to be fast and dirty. End of story. Capitalism. They didn't get rich doing things honestly. Did you believe their amazing marketing means they are amazing people? Lol
zerohydrogen 9 points 2y ago
I should say o do wish my hands daily. Just before and after work. Because cleaning yourself is punishment at starbucks. No one wipes anything no door knobs,. K credit card machines or phones or computers etc.

Corona virus shut our store down every 2 weeks.

But we made millions for the company. That's what's important
Not the virus or the workers. A new Mega yacht is what we should focus on as workers for our Glorious Leader.
_paperbackhead_ 3 points 2y ago
Going to give my store a bit of credit we try to wash our hands every 30 minutes and if I’m CS I make a point to sanitize our credit card machines and the condiment bar (we just have napkins out on ours) I do get it’s difficult to keep up with though when we’re slammed
Honey_Ginger [OP] 2 points 2y ago
And our store we all wash our hands we aren't going to be touching everything and switching tasks and just go our shifts like that, that's just gross 😂
zerohydrogen 5 points 2y ago
And yes it's gross as hell
I touch money then screens then food the drinks.

If you took a blacklight it would look like a 1970s porn gangbang set.

But hey the managers got their bonuses so that's all that matters. Dozens get corona who cares management got an extra $1000.
zerohydrogen -4 points 2y ago
Well it costs 5 seconds and maybe it's just tue tower grove store but 3 seconds saved every hour adds up.

I needed a job. So i didn't wash my hands to make management happy with drive thru numbers so they could get bonuses.

This isn't about being clean to customers. We had corona outbreaks every 2 weeks.this was about making managers get their bonuses after being closed.

So we constantly constantly constantly cut every corner we could to save "3 seconds per hour".

I couldn't figure out exactly why other than labor then i learned about bonuses for management so that's why they told us to just wash before and after work.
ThrowawayTheOmlet 13 points 2y ago
Thats pretty shitty of them. Ive also had my schedule change last minute. Like before covid i had this huge day planned with my friends at the ren faire and it was fine because i wasnt scheduled that day, then suddenly 1-2 days before the big day my schedule changes and i have to work in the middle of that day. When i brought it up to the manager he was like “oh well too bad. I didnt change schedule but you have to come in anyways, idc about your plans.” Im also scheduled 5.75 hours almost every shift because they dont want to give out 30s, but I almost always end up staying 15+ min late anyways. They have a lingo too which always irks me. Customers are “guests”, workers are “partners”, we arent fast food we’re peoples “third place.” You aren’t fired, you’re “separated from the company”. I find it kind of patronizing, just say what it is.
anchor_tf_down 7 points 2y ago
if you’re staying long enough for a 30 but not getting one, that’s against policy whether you were only scheduled 5.75 hours or not. you either need to put your foot down (easier said than done, i know) and leave when you’re scheduled to, or start texting your store manager every single day that you stay for 6 hours and don’t get a lunch break until they do something about it. i had the same thing happen to me last summer, and it finally stopped once i told my store manager to either make sure i get my lunches when i stay late or to tell the shifts to stop keeping me late, otherwise i’d escalate it to the DM.
SteampoweredClock 6 points 2y ago
Look for a better job. These are things I noticed when I first started. You'll be crying through each shift within months if you don't get out of there
Beingme4me 5 points 2y ago
If things escalate to a bad place and you need this job, I'd see if you can transfer. If it's convenient for you, and you can get your boss to sign off on it you should be able to transfer easily.
Allopathological 3 points 2y ago
Bro holy shit my manager did that too!

He was like “pay is gonna be raised to $14 an hour by the time you start!”

Then when I actually started it was “oh sorry I made a mistake the pay rise I told you about is actually for the next state over”

Like bro what.
Js_On_My_Yeet 3 points 2y ago
Former partner here. They are taking advantage of you. Do not settle for less. Contact your DM. If they can't/don't help then call the RM. If they don't do anything then contact corporate. Honestly, Starbucks doesn't give a shit about it's partners. You'd be lucky if you have any SM/DM/RM do anything for you.
dthomp0806 2 points 2y ago
Schedules cannot be changed without asking after they are posted. And you don't have to say yes.
_paperbackhead_ 2 points 2y ago
There’s also a way to to fix your schedule so that they can not mess with your hours
zerohydrogen 2 points 2y ago
Dude they stole all our tips every week. Welcome to Starbucks. It's such a big company no one can fix it so everyone steals constantly. i saw manager straight take a $20 from a customer for a tip for us and pocket it. Happens all day, e dry daily. $8 drinks, mom wage, food stamps, timing every second you do (taking order, handing food, running cards).

Literally every hour a manager will tell "3 seconds behind on runningcard"
.or !2 seconds behind on handing food)

I walked out. I make $25 serving down the street and now that I'm not at starbucks i don't have to be on welfare any more.

Yes, you're $8 drink doesn't pay enough for your baristas to eat so the govt picks up the tah for feeding them.

Starbucks makes billions by using welfare to pay what their workers deserve.

I am a kroger employed bariata in a licensed sb... I am a union member. It has served me well. I get my full 40 every week. We can not due to kroger rules take tips. With what I make a week I financed a new car... I know there may not be many kroger sb... but I can almost promise the one near you is short staffed. Paid vacation after 1 year, anything over 8 hours a day is ot, anything over 40 is ot... so many benefits to being union...
Sgeatan 7 points 2y ago
My boss as she schedules me three hour shifts so I don’t get a break.

Choose 2 of 3.

Cleanliness, speed, or high profit.

You can't have all 3.

Currently starbucks choose speed and profit and cleanliness (even during a pandemic) is all for show. We only wipe when customers can see. Otherwise we get yelled at for wasting time wiping down door handles.

It was hell. Constant politics., Harassment, i was the only guy and somehow that made me have to not share any male perspectives as that's discrimination against the teenagers. Low pay, NEVERENDING timing, almost no tips, dirty as hell, rude.

I mean literally it was the worst job I've had ny a factor of 10. Currently i make 2.5x as much and do 1/4 the work. $25 am hour and it's only a block away from that corona invested slave ship. I actually became suicidal and had huge manic episodes with the constant yelling about 3 seconds over this hour. It was my first week.

It's a job for kids who don't know that abuse isn't normal

Starbucks makes cash off hiring kids who love with parents or adults on foodstanps and welfare so their $8 drinks make tens of millions in bonuses for the execs.

I’m just reading all of these comments in sadness. I’m very thankful to work in the store I’m at, at least I am now that I see how it’s going elsewhere.
I will say there are things I don’t agree with for sure, but I feel safe and supported and that is what matters for sure.
I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this issue.
Canadiansbux 2 points 2y ago
I work in a grocery store kiosk so we are unionized. Which means I make .60 over minum wage for the 5yrs of the new contract. Also because we are unionized we are not allowed free drinks. discounts or tips.

Well this aged well
colonade17 1 points 2y ago
Everytime you read a post about a manager abusing a barista, or just being a bad manager, that's a reason we need a union.

Labor laws in America are a joke and in most cities and states offer little to no meaningful protection.

And while Starbucks offers some nice perks and benefits, there's nothing to stop them from taking that away if they decide it's too expensive for them.
zerohydrogen -5 points 2y ago
Worst job i 20 years. Min wage, $20 tips a week for a story that is busy every second with a 20 car line.

Everything is timed.eveey hour the boss shots you are 3 seconds slow taking orders. Everything is timed.

No wonder only teenagers work there because you can't make enough to live on even though it's $8 coffee

They disabled tipping on app because you won't feel guilty now about using that for more drinks.

Preloading onto the app makes starbucks basically a $1 billion bank that refuses to pay enough to live on while timing every second of every task.

I've worked in coffee shops. It's easy, relaxed and pays $15
Starbucks was the VERy worst job ever.

I quit. They spent $27 for first class letter saying i am fired for saying "fuck this job fuck min wage and fuck stealing my tips".

They literally recorded that, wrote it, printed and shipped it for $30. I hung it on my wall.

$8 coffee and the workers get food stamps.

Also you so get food but there's nowhere youre allowed to eat and you're scheduled leas if you take it.

Plus the endless liberal politics. I'm liberal but jeez. A block away from my house (which is by the bucks) a cop was shot in the head chasing a rapist. He died.

The teenagers cheered that a white cop was murdered - except he was a black father of 3 who was a rookie killed by a white rapist

But who cares about the truth. Dead cops are great according to Starbucks. Every emotes cheered it on daily as he slowly died in hospital (without verifying facts about race, they don't want the truth they call you mansplaining for reading the news).
Eventually i told management to stop talking politics. I'm liberal but I'm here to work. And if u want politics enable tipping again.
