advice when dealing with SM issues (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by angryairheadaries
relatively new (297!) SSV here! i’ve seen a lot of posts on here talking about issues with SMs and i just wanted to share that if you have ANY issue with a SM, the first contact you need is your DM. they’re your SM’s direct superior and they can do the most to try to rectify whatever situation is wrong. i’m fortunate enough to have a DM that makes his presence very well-known (and gives his card to all the shifts), but if your DM is unable to help you can always reach out to another SM (especially if you’re thinking about transferring!!) — the only warning i have with this is that you never know who knows who, so this may come back to bite you.

i hate seeing posts about baristas/SSV’s having issues with their SM’s... i never realized how many issues there seem to be between the lower and higher positions! as a former licensed store SM (really a glorified SSV) i never knew all the things that can happen in the bigger stores.

just know you’re *never* alone and even if things get dire they can always get better, and if you feel stuck there’s always a way out. :)

I was in a very similar situation. It’s ALWAYS okay to reach out to your dm, for anything. I believe its in our training guides. As for transferring, you would make it known to your sm you’d like to transfer to another store as soon as possible. They might agree with you and second store experience is always helpful. You can do your research and find a store you’d like to work at and see if the transfer to that store is a possibility.

I actually don’t agree with this.

You shouldn’t contact your DM for having ANY issue with your SM. DMs don’t need to be bothered with certain issues, and it is always a best practice in conflict resolution to speak to the person you are having conflict with directly whenever possible.

It is ideal to try to solve problems with your SM directly before going above them. If it is something you cannot go to your SM for, and do not have an asm, then perhaps it is ok to chat with your DM.

Its also best practice to let your SM know before reaching out to other store managers looking for a transfer.

most of the posts i'd seen were in regard to issues they're having with their sm that weren't being resolved directly -- of course if you're having issues you need to talk to them first, but if they're not listening talking to the dm might help, depending on the situation.
