Declaring Tips (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by create_consciousness
What is this!? There has to be something we can do right?! I’ve been using my weekly tips for emergency funds and savings and now it turns out that we’re being taxed for our tips!???? That is so fxcking unfair that I can’t even fathom how they could do that. I tried using the speak up tab on Partner hub to address my concerns but now I think, they won’t do shit based on all the post I’ve been reading here. Anyone else feel this way?

Tips have always been taxable. The IRS has *always* required you to report your tips to your employer and on your tax return. Starbucks is now trying to comply better with those requirements. Rather than imputing $.50/hr into your paycheck for tips and requiring you to report anything over that amount, they're now reporting digital tips themselves (and withholding taxes) and requiring you to report all of your cash tips. They're doing this because of federal law that already existed.

Oh dude! I didn’t know that lol welp I feel dumb. Thank you for the clarification! Everyone in my store, including myself, were so confused and outraged lmao I guess it was in vain. I’m was straight up going to revolt 😂 again, thank you.

No problem! I think Starbucks did a pretty bad job communicating the change. They didn't clearly explain what they were doing and what would be different, making it out to be a much bigger deal than it actually is.

^(While I'm talking about taxes, everyone should know that Turbo Tax scams people and if you make $72,000 a year or less, you should not be paying a penny to file your taxes, no matter what. Use one of the free options at) $1^(.)
