New Hire (yay!!), Need Tips!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gcjones016
Hi everyone. I just got hired as a barista and it’s also my first job. I am going shopping today to buy appropriate, dress-code friendly clothes.. so I was wondering if anyone had any outfit/style recommendations for an 18 year old male?
I am probably going to buy Doc Martins, but I don’t want a big oversized boot. I prefer something smaller, but still work-oriented. Is there a really good Doc Martin shoe that isn’t a boot? I’m also thinking of sticking with a simple, black aesthetic, but trying to think of outfits to put together. I really like the idea of black, fitted V-necks and plain black pants/jeans. Any brand or style recommendations are appreciated! Also, I would love some general tips for my first day. Thanks in advance & I’m so excited to join the community here!

I just stick with black shirts and dark jeans. Not something you asked, but get a dark laundry detergent. I use the oxi clean dark with regular detergent and it’s helped with fading, but still gets the gross out. I also toss my aprons in as well and haven’t had issues. You will get very gross at work though. I was not fully prepared for this when I started.
As far as shoes, I just ordered some nice boots from Wolverine. The shoes I got back when I started in October aren’t holding up. If it’s a job you plan to stick with for a while, definitely invest in good quality shoes. I also have arch supports and compression socks, but in Starbucks world I’m basically elderly so you’ll probably be ok with just shoes.
And again, not what you asked for, but go ahead and buy some sharpies and pens. You’ll want both on you at all times.

Awesome. Seems that my original plan was a good idea. Dark laundry detergent would have never crossed my mind, though, so thank you!! I have problems with my feet & ankles, so I especially appreciate your mention of compression socks and arch support. My shift friend mentioned sharpies and pens as well. I’m still not sure why, but I’m definitely buying some now, haha! Thanks again!

You’ll have to date EVERYTHING, but the sharpies bleed on the stickers so you’ll need a pen. You typically write the dates directly on bottles and plant milks, so you’ll need a sharpie for those. Always have both to make your life easier.

T-shirts:
-Charcoal
-Navy blue
-White
Polos:
-charcoal
Pants:
-Worn brown traveler pants
-Gray jeans
-light blue jeans (occasionally)
shoes:
-generic black running shoes that I have had for three years.
That is what I wear, make sure your tees don’t fit too snug around your shoulders looser is better.

I wouldn’t recommend using shoes that you like too much, but get something that easy to clean and safe. All black sounds great and it’ll be a breeze to get ready. My only tips for you is too ask questions!! It’s better to do things the right way, than to do it wrong because you are unsure. You got this!! Have fun!

Thanks so much for the advice! I will definitely ask a lot of questions!! My best friend is a shift (at a different location) so I also have him as a resource!
