New rules on reporting tips? Help? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by FudgeMunchkin
So before, they automatically imputed $.50 an hour in tip income but as of 3/2 we have to report our own. This is my first time doing my taxes and I want to make sure that I just have to report the tips I’ve gotten since 3/2?

You file taxes based on what you earned last year. So the only income that matters on your current tax return is what you earned in 2020. The tips you're reporting now won't matter until you do your taxes next year.

^(While I'm talking about taxes, everyone should know that Turbo Tax scams people and if you make $72,000 a year or less, you should not be paying a penny to file your taxes, no matter what. Use one of the free options at) $1^(.)

You can report the tips to Starbucks using MyPartnerInfo on a store computer. If you do that and report all your cash tips to Starbucks, they’ll automatically report them to the IRS and I’m pretty sure they’ll take out taxes for you too.

If you don’t report your tips to Starbucks, you technically might have to report them to the IRS on next year’s tax return. However, most baristas probably won’t do either, and the chances of getting audited are super low anyway.
