Thoughts on being a SSV vs a Barista? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by beautifulcam
My DM wants to talk tomorrow about me becoming a SSV and idk if I really want that added responsibility right now.
Is the pay worth it?
I know more is expected of you, but is it more stressful than being on cafe bar during peak?

I honestly found it really liberating. Dont get me wrong, its stressful and you have a lot to worry about. But you're also not stuck doing one thing for 2+ hours at a time. It also puts you in a better position to fix things at your store than you would be in if you were a barista.

Its probably one of the most rewarding jobs I've had so far. I love the relationships I've built with my partners. There are definitely draw backs, so don't make the decision lightly. But I personally don't think I could ever go back to being a barista.

Hate being on bar for hours. Getting paid more and not do stuff I hate? Sign me up

Being a ssv is so much easier then being a barista.

Honestly it can be really stressful, everything falls onto you if a shift goes bad. However I still would never step down to being a barista. I do genuinely like being a SSV. You’re pretty much guaranteed an hour off the floor to do your supervisor duties which can be nice too. Again it is fairly stressful but I would never ever become a barista again.

It's stressful yes. Especially if you're in a very busy store. BUT, assuming you have a good SM that supports and encourages you, it can be a very fun and rewarding position. I could never go back being a barista tbh, not that I don't miss the care-free just being on bar shifts (I love bar), but being an SSV gives me more freedom to do things. I like to run my shifts fairly and chill. Rotating the baristas every hour or so, giving out extra brakes, if time allows it and generally creating a good working environment. The pay (at least for us in the UK) is shit, not gonna lie, but I think it's worth it.
