just got hired at starbucks. help!!(self.starbucksbaristas)

hi everyone. I was just hired at a starbucks nearby my house. it’s a new location that was opened just a year ago. the interview went really well and the manager hired me on the spot. right now i’m waiting for the background check to be cleared so I can start training. In the mean time, I wanted to come on here and see if I could find any seasoned baristas (partners :)) who could give me some tips? i’ve read through some older threads and seen partners say that they took notes during training that they could refer back to later. did you? and if so, did you physically carry around a notepad with you with a pen and all that? also, my main fear is just learning all the drink recipes. if there are any sources/notecards you know of with most or all of the drink recipes so I could look at them before starting training, that would be great. tips concerning anything else are very much appreciated as well. thanks ;)

I just finished my training! Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If something isn’t clicking, tell them - your trainer and your partners want you to succeed, because it makes the job easier for everyone when everyone’s working well!
The drink recipes are easier than it seems - I found the cold drinks easier to learn than the hot drinks, because cold drinks pretty much tell you exactly what’s in them! The espresso drinks are harder, and I still need to work on how many shots and pumps everything gets

ah ok. i was just afraid of like annoying my co workers with questions. but i’m sure they will be patient and understand since they were once in the same position ;)

I totally get it! Think of it this way - they’d rather you ask and make a drink correctly, than have to remake a drink for an upset customer!

I was hired back at the beginning of February, (298). I will tell you it might seem like a lot at first but just keep practicing. Most recipes just come with practice. There are recipe cards you can always look at. I always look at the shelf life card to help with dating items. Do not be afraid to ask questions and get the most out of your training days. I wish you the best of luck!

give it 3 months and u know everything, hot drinks are usually easier since it’s like a base drink and u just add ur syrups lol cold bar is easy too! good luck, i studied on the starbucks app

First off congrats on being hired on the spot! For me, I did take notes (just cause that’s the kind of person I am lol) but I never used them so you’ll be fine and the majority of people probably don’t even take them also. Technically you’re not supposed to train when your off the clock, but I found that taking time outside of work to study the drinks really made my shifts way less stressful so I’m glad I did it. There are a lot of quizlets online that quiz you on number of shots, pumps, and the ingredients in all the drinks. Also the Starbucks app can be helpful to see these things as well (however don’t rely on this too much cause it does have a lot of errors for some reason). Maybe you could also ask to take the beverage cards with the recipes for all the drinks home and if they don’t let you, just look at them when you’re on a ten or something. That’s just some of the stuff I did and it helped me. Good luck!

Personally, I never took notes on my training videos.
However, I did study the recipe cards religiously and asked A LOT of questions to every barista at my store. I learned tips and tricks from each one of them, but in the end I took whatever works best for me.
I am close to my 1 year anniversary with the Siren and bar is one of my strongest skills. I feel like after 3 months you will start to feel comfortable being by yourself and it will come naturally. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, that is the only way to learn from them.
Hopefully this helps :)

yes thank you! with the recipe cards, when you are first put on bar can you use them however much you need? or will they try to limit how much you use them

Depending on your manager, you can take them home with you to study, or you can study them on your ten. Also, the POS is a great resource since it will literally tell you all of the ingredients a drink has, including amount of syrups, espresso shots, inclusions etc.
I like to repeat the "x" amount of syrups in my head when I make a drink, such as 2,3,4,5 for hot drinks and 3,4,6,7 for iced drinks. Of course, this will fluctuate if you are making a macchiato since it will contain 1 less pump of syrup. However, try to find a way to memorize the recipes, or use repetition as I did myself and it has been truly helpful.
