Why is the Starbucks matcha latte sweet?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by folowthewhiterarebit
I dont work at Starbucks but I have been a barista at an independent cafe. I live in the UK if that makes a difference.
Now, I love a good oat matcha latte but I find the Starbucks one tastes artificial and sweet, but I cant work out why. I dont like any sugar/sweetners in my drinks ever (and always make it clear in my order that I dont want any) so it really bugs me that the Starbucks one tastes that way. Can anyone explain why it does?

I know its an insanely pointless first world problem but thats incredibly depressing lol

Seriously! We make our teas and iced coffee with added sweetener. Why can’t the matcha and chai be the same?

It’s what makes it so popular :/

I sort of get having creams and sugar in coffee (flavourings is just a hard no) but I dont see the point in matcha - if you make it right there isn't any bitterness so what's the point of extra sweetness? Just detracts from the flavour

I agree with you. It’s as if we have to go out of our way to avoid added sugar. At least in my country they have taken liquid cane syrup out of the iced teas and have cut the sweet vanilla syrup in our whipped cream by half. I suspect the change in the whip fuels the drive to replace it with sweet cream cold foam which gets Sbux and extra $ for every drink

I've been told that real, good matcha is expensive and that we use cheaper, lower quality matcha masked with sugar. I dont know for sure that this is true, but it makes sense.

For personal buying the best deal I've seen (in the UK) is £10/200g so its definitely the most expensive ingredient but I'd hope a multi billion company could afford it.
But yeah your point makes total sense as to why they'd do that and (again pointless first world problem) that is a shame.

I guarantee they can afford it, but why would they dish out extra $$ when they can use crappy artificially sweet matcha for less?

I totally agree with you, I'm always wanting to get matcha or chai as my markout but they're way too sweet :/

If you want to buy your own matcha, look for ceremonial grade (specifically that). It is more expensive than the rest but if you buy cheap matcha it tastes like grass. Starbucks might use whats called culinary grade which really should only be used for cooking. A decent sized bag will last you a good while but don't be drawn into any offers where it comes in a little jar or its got some over-designed packaging - its insta pretty but doubles the price.

Cool, thanks for the tip!

In Canada the matcha is unsweetened luckily. We add liquid cane sugar for sweetness

The first ingredient in the matcha powder is sugar.
