I just got hired!! Got a few questions for the veteran baristas(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by b0rrowers
Besides the basic questions, how hard is trainin, how hard is memorizing drink combos and cup sizes blah blah, I have more specific questions. I'm 16 and just completed my "tasks" for getting hired yesterday. I don't know when my first day will be yet but here are my questions:
Firstly I'm pretty poor and can only afford 1 pair of work pants and shirt within dresscode before I get my first paycheck. Are any managers super anal about this type of thing assuming you DO wash your clothes regularly? Is there anyway of receiving your pay other than direct deposit? I'm got hired for part time, but say I needed to do less hours 14-16 a week, and only on weekends, would they let me go because of that? For your break, are you expected to bring your own food always or can you go to a food place next door? I think that's all my questions for now, thanks! Wish me luck 🤞🏼

if you’re lucky, your shift managers will be super chill and not give a crap about the dreascode unless you’re wearing something crazy. the no hair color rule was always funny to me because my main shift supervisor has BRIGHT pink hair.

My manager has a little of pink in her hair too 🤣 I'm pretty sure there is not rule against it anymore though

Just from my experience you should be okay wearing the one set of clothes as long as they are clean. A common rule is as long as its in dresscode and clean you'll be okay. You can get your pay check mailed to you but depending how far you are from home base in Seattle it can take a few days. Starbucks is understanding so if you're in school and can only do weekends make sure you put that as your availability and let the store manager know. Thats not a reason to fire you. Also yes you can get food from somewhere else as long as you are back on the floor when you're supposed to be your fine. Stores do very so just get a feeler for it. Like at my store our SM isn't very anal abut dresscode like at all and we also tend to use delivery services for food😂 hope this helps! Good luck!

Congrats! Your training experience will depend on your store/trainer but I really enjoyed my trading! You’ll likely learn how to make all the drinks, get practice on oven, register, and customer support (think brewing coffee, restocking, some cleaning). It can be a bit overwhelming at first but everyone should be supportive and helpful. You’re not expected to memorize everything right away and will still be learning after training. At my store green beans spend a lot of time on register/oven at first, at least while it’s busy so they’re not overwhelmed. I used the menu on the Starbucks app to remember the number of shots in each espresso drink/what drinks get whip by default (the pictures helped me) but your store iPad will have all of the recipe cards if you ever need to check anything and this should be your first line of defense for recipe checking as it’s more detailed and guaranteed to be accurate. If no one shows you how to find the recipe cards, just nicely ask someone!
Regarding your availability just make sure your manger knows your availability ahead of time. It shouldn’t be a problem as long as your store needs match your availability and you’re giving a few weeks notice if you need to change it.
You can definitely bring your own food! My store has a fridge in the back for partners (not sure if every store does) so I like to bring food or I’ll go next door to get something. As long as you can get it and eat within your 30 min break you’re good.
Good luck:)

I don’t know the answers to all these questions since I just got hired too. Today I did my on boarding and I start my training on Tuesday. Just thought I’d let you know that I’m in the same boat and we will both do great. Best of luck to you, partner :) 💚💚

Some managers are lax about dress code but I strongly recommend you seriously don’t wear anything you care too much about bc once you get time on bar, your clothes will get dirty. You’ll be totally fine with just one set of clothes as long as they’re washed, but if you needed to, you might want to hit up some thrift stores or even Target/Walmart for some cheap black shirts and pants :) we’re more or less all broke so don’t stress too much, trust me
They shouldn't let you if you can only work weekends if that's what you said for your availability. You can leave during your break but I don't recommend especially if you only have one pair of work clothes (or if you need to get more comfortable shoes) or if you're saving money. If you don't sign up for direct deposit you should get a paper check, but direct deposit is easier. I started a little over a month ago. Best advice is don't be afraid to ask questions. It'll be a ton of info to take in. If you deal with rude customers remind yourself not go take it personally. I like to keep a gratitude journal for my extra tough days so I can remind myself of the good moments.

I originally put my availability as until 10pm on week days and ends but my parents don't like driving after sunset. As a minor in school, I can't work before 4pm though so that would completely get rid of my weekday hours(with the understanding that they don't give shifts less than four hours) So, Saying I stayed with my current schedule for a while, maybe a month, if I told her maybe two weeks in advance I'd like to change it, she should be fine with it right?

Once you get access to the parter hours app you can change your availability there. It takes 3 weeks for it to change in the managers system I believe
