Yesterday, the Starbucks barista in the drive thru complemented me on my shirt, an oversized grey and black flannel. Today, at a different Starbucks, the drive thru barista complimented the white interior of my car.
I understand that I am an overly suspicious person, but it is possible that Starbucks has been telling their employees to compliment the customers?
JeanLucPicardsAss320 points2y ago
They don't tell us to specifically, but customer connections are a big deal and I've found it easiest to just be honest if I like something! I love complimenting people on their hair, nails, cool masks, all kinds of stuff. And although customer connections are pushed, I've never faked a compliment or lied for a connection so id take it as genuine:)
trs401 [OP]119 points2y ago
This makes sense to me. In the moment, the compliments didn’t seem fake or out of place. It was just later when I was home thinking about it that it dawned on me that it might be part of the business strategy.
Side note - everyone is always so nice. It’s part of the reason I go to sbux.
NOTcreative-48 points2y ago
Hi u/trs401 I really love your username! Thank you have a great day!
Wonderful_Nightmare8 points2y ago
XD you sound like one of my partners
NOTcreative-2 points2y ago
You have such great energy! Thank you, have a superb Sunday!
indynyx24 points2y ago
I was all over telling people something I loved that they had on, or loved their bag, or whatever. All for real.
I'm still loving on this guy's watch from 2-3 years ago (omg it was so nice)
JeanLucPicardsAss16 points2y ago
I have a wonderful customer whos hair matches the colour of her drink order, I love it every time haha. There's a ton of rough posts about the job and within reason, but there are also customers who make my day:)
Cooch_211912 points2y ago
This one customer had a wallet that was designed to look like a tomato soup can it’s been months and I’m still obsessed
HawkSpotter3 points2y ago
Like an Andy Warhol Campbell’s Tomato Soup can?
Cooch_21194 points2y ago
The Campbell soup can but it was coach brand ! She found it at a goodwill apparently
mmpotpie781 points2y ago
same
FfierceLaw143 points2y ago
Yyyyeeesss . . . So, if you have the app and get a survey from Sbux please give your local store the highest score in all categories
cringeqween1354 points2y ago
Any time I complement someone It's s genuine complement.
LackOfColor_41 points2y ago
We are encouraged to make customer connections, personally, I talked with my SM about how we could be doing them better. I made a personal goal and passed down to my baristas that we should all make one for the week or month. Mine this month is to make personal connections specifically with compliments! But only genuine ones.. maybe you were just rocking a cool ass shirt.
Hope it made your day, though!
trs401 [OP]13 points2y ago
It did!
[deleted]38 points2y ago
They’re trying to make “customer connections” which is a big part of our job forced upon us.
crunchycookie2825 points2y ago
emphasis on forced:’)
honeykoala1532 points2y ago
tbh I hate the customer connection as a job responsibility because if I have something to say or a customer talks to me then okay. But most of the time the customer and baristas are both in a hurry and it’s uncomfortable and a useless waste of time IMO. If it’s not genuine, why fake it?
The_Septic_Shock8 points2y ago
I'm of the same opinion. I feel so horrible when I have to fake it, like I'm a used car dealer. The problem is if I don't, its a discipline action against me. It just feels dirty to have it as a business model
honeykoala158 points2y ago
I’ve given just the standard “how are you doing? What can we get started for you?” And had my manager tell me to “make sure I’m connecting” like okay I can make sure I am making mindless conversation but there isn’t much to genuinely “connect” with a person I met 14 seconds ago over
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee13 points2y ago
It is encouraged, but like others here I am always honest with my compliments, I just actually say out loud that I like people's nails/shirt/steering wheel cover etc more often than I would outside of work.
KingKiller66612 points2y ago
Not every store, but I have heard some managers force people to.
sugartea633 points2y ago
Mine do
RoaringDragonite8 points2y ago
We are instructed to compliment. But the easiest thing to do isjust vocalize what you already notice about someone.
dazedandconfusedhere8 points2y ago
We’re supposed to connect with the customer, but I personally only make genuine compliments, or I try to connect some other way!
whycantibeamermaid8 points2y ago
Personally, I try to always compliment someone if I like something. It’s amazing to see how much it can brighten someone’s mood getting an unexpected compliment or bit of praise. A little kindness goes a long way.
Then again, some people are assholes and don’t deserve compliments. Lol
Tall_Draw_5218 points2y ago
It also gives them something to do. The job can be a bit monotonous.
hautsause6 points2y ago
I hate forced customer connections. I really like when I go somewhere and they politely and professionally speak to me and then let me wait silently, and then give me my stuff and I say thank you and leave. I do not want to make a friend every single time i have to go buy something.
drinkliquidclocks5 points2y ago
I like to compliment customers because it's the easiest way to make small talk. I only compliment someone if I really, really mean it though.
rosesandthorns174 points2y ago
in the window we definitely have to keep customers engaged- but engaging customers with compliments is a personal choice. A lot of the times i look for something to compliment, but something that I genuinely like or want to know more about!
GeekRemedy4 points2y ago
All about that CX connection. I’m sure most compliments are genuine though. 🙂
CeramicLicker3 points2y ago
We’re encouraged to be nice and chatty with customers but I’m sure the compliments were still genuine, even if they might not have said it while not at work.
Plus I think Starbucks baristas might be more inclined to like flannel shirts than the general population
Wonderful_Nightmare3 points2y ago
On the real, customer connections have become an insanely important score for how our stores are doing and management is requiring us to do everything possible to maintain high scores. Since my partners struggle to figure out how to do that I just tell them to compliment something from each customer. Like anything. If you remotely like something a customer is wearing or does, tell em "Hey, u/trs40, I really like your (insert something about you i kinda like, e.g. suspicion of starbucks' policies)! Hope you have a good rest of your day!".
Boom, easy.
sugartea633 points2y ago
My manager told us we are required to.
CalDoesMaths3 points2y ago
As a barista. I don’t ever give false ones. As others have said, were encouraged to talk to guests and make them feel welcome, but I usually like to just compliment on something worth complimenting. Everybody has something good about them always :)
cxbar2 points2y ago
at my store, my manager pushes us to pick out one thing each customer has on, be it a shirt, purse, glasses, etc to create “customer connections.” Unless your barista is phoning it in though most comment on stuff that actually catch their eye, so know that they aren’t lying! :)
edit: a word
hopelovepeace332 points2y ago
They don’t tell us to compliment customers, if a barista is giving you a compliment it’s because they genuinely mean it
Afl4c1 points2y ago
Nah. I do compliment on shift but they are rare!
Voxxyvoo1 points2y ago
we get chewed out to hell and back if we don't "connect with a customer" as well as being expected to get drinks out in a timely manner even when we're overflowing with orders.
simplemina1 points2y ago
I mean they ask for customer connection ...I personally try my best to actually compliment stuff I find nice I try not to lie ...although I can't talk for everyone
Magseroni1 points2y ago
Customer connections are stressed at meetings. I usually just write on cups though with puns for my customers if I have extra time though. Stuff like You’re mug-nificent, or thank you a latte. Or You’re Frapp-ulous. Something to make the customers day and create the third place. Starbucks is supposed to be an escape from life so Customers Connections are essential. I do compliment, but only when I actually do mean it.

mradeline1 points2y ago
Soooo my manager does straight up tell us to find something about the person to compliment, that being said, I never give out a compliment while I'm on DTR unless I genuinely mean it.
frient19951 points2y ago
It’s all about being personal and making connections. I love complementing people on their outfits, dogs, clean car, masks. Anything that makes that person them in that moment. If they were worried it was to much they are reassured it looks great!

anonymousfbi-agent0 points2y ago
yes we get paid to be nice to you. next time would you like a massage?
lenagracep0 points2y ago
I am always honest with my compliments. Starbucks by no means forces anyone to do anything. Connecting with customers is part of being in the customer service industry. Yes, we do get scored and have competitions on who has the highest customer connection scores in the district, but it’s all in good fun.
iWantToBeARealBoy7 points2y ago
Except it’s not in good fun when your manager goes around threatening disciplinary action to completely random baristas when your score drops for some unknown reason, just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Managers also get their asses chewed.
trs401 [OP]2 points2y ago
How does the scoring work?
The_Septic_Shock2 points2y ago
Max score in every survey category or its a bad review.
trs401 [OP]5 points2y ago
I’ll remember that and make sure to give max scorings when I get a survey.
Nancy208-2 points2y ago
Yeah, I had one kid gush over my makeup one day. I read magazines, and KNOW that my makeup is not on point. The first compliment was believable but when he went on and on, it was obvious he was full of shit,
emosweatshirt3 points2y ago
you sound very bitter over a compliment, i hope u GENUINELY have a better day and/or start feeling better about yourself
