Maximizing Markouts - What do you do? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by honeykoala15
I view markouts as part of my compensation and I try to get the most every day. I usually do a venti drink and one of the RTE lunch protein boxes to take home each day.

What markouts do you recommend to get the most $$$ worth ?

Mark out tea bags using “add tea bag” to your drink. Then you can make tea at home!

I’m not a tea drinker but I’ll share this one with my fellow partner that does drink tea but not coffee and is sad that we only get bean markouts and not tea box markouts anymore
The_Great_Lynzeeni 15 points 2y ago
You can also hit "add tea bag" as many times as you want- and it still marks it out as one beverage ....but I totally wouldn't know anything about that

It’s also a cute cheap gift idea! For a Mother’s Day I bought a bamboo box with compartments for holding tea bags and filled it with starbucks tea. Those tea bags retail for $0.50 at Starbucks!

Bruh I’m a big tea drinker and I’ve been so disappointed that we can’t mark out the tea boxes anymore, I’ll be doing this!! Thank you, you lovely bean

Also menu challenges! You should do them! I posted a bit ago. But if you need to get a latte, cappuccino, and a lunch sandwich. Ring them all up and use your partner mark out and food and then pay for a short latte with 30% off and you’ll get your entire menu challenge done. That’s 100 stars for about $3

The best use of stars is on bakery items. 50 stars for a bakery item is the way to go.
honeykoala15 [OP] 10 points 2y ago
I like to use my stars for merch once I hit 400 😎
RoaringDragonite 10 points 2y ago
Also worth! Go for the cups that are 22.99 or more. Use your 30% off AND 400 stars and it’ll take off for the entire thing

Edit: okay not actually monetarily worth it. But also it’s a cup and I don’t really think we who are paid minimum wage should ever spend our cash money on cups so I think this is a good treat yourself worth moment
honeykoala15 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
Ahhhhh! Amazing you are literally the Starbucks money saving guru of my dreams.

Some locations (I know mine does) also lets you use 400 stars to deduct $20 from the cost of any merchandise and then pay the rest out of pocket. Even for non-partner normal customers. I think that’s pretty rad. Idk if your management approves of that, but it’s def a thing that the system allows!
RoaringDragonite 3 points 2y ago
Yep! They changed the 400 star bonus so all locations should allow this.

If the cups are in demand or become scarce could you sell on EBay?
honeykoala15 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
You could but I’m too lazy to 😂
tenthwalker 8 points 2y ago
You can get fired for it if you're not careful/repeat offenses, the last weekly update had a whole thing about it
honeykoala15 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
🤩🤩🤩 thank you for this. I thought I was pretty much never going to get stars anymore now that I get most stuff for free while working
rio8envy7 12 points 2y ago
I get a tea or frap as my drink mark out then get a trenta water with a fuck ton of ice which I then freeze for later.
RoaringDragonite 6 points 2y ago
Oh derp. I keep thinking of some. Sorry for the spam, I’m just really feeling this post. I love being cheap and min maxing!

If you cook at all. Look into tiramisu. You can literally take home as many shots of espresso as you want.

If you like to mix drinks. Look into espresso martinis (or if you’re hosting)

When you make your frappes. Don’t use frappe roast. Use shots (also add the shots to the blender last, after you’ve added the milk ice flavors and corn syrup so that it doesn’t melt all the ice at the beginning, also light on the milk and I suggest heavy cream)

Usually I’ll take home the biggest size and make it really strong so if I go home I can make the drink last. Ex. Refreshers? Never add water or ice. Lemonade? Straight from the box. Chai? Double those pumps and no ice. Same with iced lattes. Double the shots and no ice. Be that customer who wants the extra cup of ice on the side.

The free food benefit got extended again:
-A lot of the people who work at my store cannot stand the thought of going to Starbucks on their day off. Find a buddy and ask them if y’all can swap mark outs on the days you work/they don’t work. I do this for the extra food benefit for when I work. (This is not allowed, so play this one by ear, depends on your manager and shift if they’re cool. At the end of the day the food gets marked out and the “sales” go up)
-Same with partners who come through on their days off. Get to know them! They know your struggle. If they do not order food and I’m the one ringing them up I ask them if they don’t want their food can I have it? My partner always appreciates the extra sandwich I bring home. (I suggest putting the sticker on the food and putting it in the back of the warming fridge and when you get a break you run that sucker to the BOH partner bin until your shift is over)

Don’t apologize I’m loving it! I’ve been getting the food every day working or not (I work about 5 or 6 days a week) I like the protein boxes because my partner takes them for their work lunch and it saves us on the grocery bill 😁

My location is weirdly strict about stuff like the lemonade but I always try to do everything I take home as concentrated as possible. Also we don’t have a partner bin like my last location did because my SM says we can’t allow anyone to consume expired food 🙄

Also it PAINS me to throw away entire bags of pastries still in the plastic wrapping that went out yesterday. I wanna just throw the whole bag into my car instead of the dumpster but I’m worried I’ll get caught 😂
RoaringDragonite 6 points 2y ago
Oh Jeez. Okay so I’m in NY. So by law we are required to have a partner food bin in the back. Also since corona began everyone in our district has been allowed to take home expired food. The food that is expired that no one takes home gets picked up every night and donated to shelters.

I think it’s really absolutely ridiculous that you have to throw that food away and you could get fired for taking it home. Tbh you could probably anonymously tip your local paper. We had a couple papers go through starbucks trash a few years ago and see how much packaged food got thrown away and that’s when they introduced the nightly donations. Would be an even bigger deal now. Hundreds of thousands of people in the US laid off, unemployment reaching new numbers, people struggling to make a living. Meanwhile your local starbucks is throwing away individually packaged food that is still good to eat every single night

We only donate like 3 days a week :( waste makes me so sad for the same reasons you mentioned. There’s no reason for abundance to be purposely destroyed while so many go hungry just to keep up the perceived value
dstnygn 3 points 2y ago
another hint with markouts is that as long as you dont get more than 7 food items a week... sbux doesn’t know that you got 2 on your shift.
dwightshru 3 points 2y ago
I make sure I get something every day. even when i’m off, even when i’m not going out for the day
