we found an entire colony of maggots underneath a tray (that’s built into the counter but apparently has some leeway) at the cold brew station, and although there were literal maggots crawling everywhere, we couldn’t close the store and had to keep making people drinks and food :)(v.redd.it)

obviously we sprayed and wiped up as many as we could and stopped making cold brew, but we couldn’t pry off the tray to get rid of the whole colony, and we didn’t know how many had escaped beyond our reach already apparently stores don’t “normally shut down because of this” but i felt absolutely disgusted trying to go on with the day as normal...
Automatic_Row_584317 points2y ago
This happened at our store too. The maintenance team has to come kill them and seal that tray. Stopped our problem immediately
xthefabledfox49 points2y ago
Wait WHAT my store has this same kind of tray under our cold brew tap. I’m bout to rip off the counter idc idc idc that’s so nasty

Was this reported to SM? SM should have called ecosure to get a treatment done. No we wouldn’t close for this, these are baby flies. Any store that has had fruit flies has had maggots crawling around in it.
Flies are generally considered worse from a food safety standpoint. Maggots are born from fly eggs born on decomposing organic material (meat, even coffee grounds). Eggs hatch to make maggots which stay in place on that material until they become flies. Flies spread disease and bacteria from surface to surface they land on, maggots don’t.
This area should have been throughly cleaned with restroom cleaner (has bleach to kill eggs) and ecosure should have been called to treat the area to avoid a fly problem (very hard to get rid of). It also sounds like this tray design should probably be brought to corporate’s attention so they’re aware of potential water build up which provides an ideal fly breeding ground.

we followed all the right protocol, but objectively, maggot scrawling around on the station where you’re making food and drinks is gross and should not be allowed. i sure as hell would not want my food or drinks prepared in that state
NOTcreative--29 points2y ago
Sure, maggots are gross and I’d be grossed out if I saw them. But based on the science flys are more of a risk to us. In a steakhouse if you saw them in meat, for sure shut it down. We don’t know how much steak is infected. But as a Starbucks manager I know the facts and science surrounding food safety in our environment. I’d much sooner shut down a store if there were flies than maggots based on the science behind food safety. But the situation should be addressed to avoid a pest issue.

i guarantee your local health department has a very different idea about maggots. OP, call the health department, not your SM.
NOTcreative--19 points2y ago
Guarantee? Strong word, must be a health inspector. Absolutely; call the health department if you’re that concerned and see what they have to say based on facts and science of food management. But I’ve seen them regularly observe worse than this and keep a business open. It’s not a risk of spreading disease. It reveals decaying organic material. If there was a fly infestation they might do something but the goal is to prevent that.

i meeeaaaannn regardless of the sCiEnCe do you not think customers would absolutely freak out if they saw maggots right next to where their drink is being prepared....we really don’t need another thing for which to be screamed at

Hold up which cold brew tray? I want to check my store now during my walk tomorrow😭
Kmsss7 points2y ago
Right? We have one that is connected to a drain... as far as I know it can’t be removed but I’m GROSSSED OUTTTTT.
gyrx51214 points2y ago
This happened at my store too! Two fumigations later and we’re still seeing fruit flies 😮

We have rats. Named em Remi. 🤷🏾♀️ And yes, Remi is the general name we've given to them all since we know there's more than one. They've been with us since before Thanksgiving (that's right, thanksgiving) and it took Target management til late January/early February to actually call an exterminator. They've caught one but the rest continue to stay in the shadows tearing shit up in our front area. The damn things are smart too. They've figured out how to get the food off the glue traps without actually falling on them.

Secret of NIMH rats
jj_justino9 points2y ago
one time my store had literal MICE living under the cabinets and instead of closing the store, we had to work for 3 days while we could hear the mice getting caught and wiggling around on glue traps. when customers asked us what was going on we had to lie. i wanted to quit so bad that week.

One time all of our drains on the floor clogged up and we were literally walking around in water and we still didnt close the store
El_Gabe69-4205 points2y ago
My store has a fungus problem under two of our sinks. They like to leak within the cabinets underneath them, and they've been mostly fixed but recently I have been able to smell it again.
Such happiness we partners get to experience 🙃
