Any advice for a new shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thekinkoman
Hi all, so to give you a little backstory, I worked at Starbucks for about two years (2017-2019), and then left until about a week ago when I was rehired as a shift manager. Being a barista has come back quickly, with little to no speed bumps really, but I’m a bit nervous about being a shift lead, so do any current or former shift managers have any advice for me? Or any baristas have things they wish their shifts did?

I'm the barista deemed "fave" of the shift team and the feedback I've gotten is that they love that I listen to their needs and give breaks on time. Like, I always try really hard to make sure people enjoy the position they're in and if they don't or more than one person is in a position they don't prefer but I need them in at the time, I make sure to rotate no more than an hour later. And with breaks, I don't care if it's gonna leave us short handed and customers waiting a few extra seconds, I make sure everybody is collectively okay that I start giving lunch breaks immediately after peak. A couple of our shifts will straight up just not give breaks until it's so late the baristas are frustrated and exhausted or they forget breaks and it's ridiculous. So, I'm the favorite shift literally for doing the bare minimum and making sure my team is taken care of. I'll take my lunch last if the day is going to be that busy, that way if anybody has to skip it... It's me.

Be sure to communicate communicate communicate!! Not just your expectations but how your baristas are doing. Don’t be afraid to coach in the moment. Learning when and how to flex the plays is the most important thing to do especially during peak. Always have a plan when coming on the shift you can look at the schedule at Starbucks teamwork’s.

But all in all just be happy and create a good energy.

Communication, flexibility and time management are my biggest ones!

Time management: the DCR is your best friend here, try your best to constantly be aware of time and when people are on/off

Flexible: you can make the greatest plan for the day, but something will always come up

Communication: letting partners know what’s going on at all time will help with the respect and willingness to do a good job. Saying things like “ hey I’m going to do this, and so-and-so is doing this. Can you work on this for me?” Will go a long way with creating a productive and happy work environment.
Also communicate with your shift team! If some thing is bothering you, speak up! And on the flip side, listen to you peers. You guys are a team and should have each other’s backs!

Last thing: even when you have a shit day, as long as you can tell yourself “ I did my best today” then don’t let a bad shift ruin it for you. This company can be hard to work for sometimes but at the end of the day if you tried your best, then that’s all anyone can ask of you and you should be happy with yourself!
