Someone came in about an hour ago and asked for an iced shaken espresso with no ice 🙃 (self.starbucksbaristas)

Refuse this. Tell them you MUST shake it with ice for safety reasons. Do not shake espresso with out ice. The heat being sealed up and shaking will pop open the cap and burn your arm (i learned the hard way)

If the customer insists then either shake it with ice and strain it or give them hot espresso shots!!!

We declined them and rung them up for a latte

Even better. Lmao people don’t even know what they’re ordering most of the time honestly

My face learned this the hard way 😭😭 ran off the floor, cried for 5 minutes, then ran right back out there ☹

Thanks for this! I never knew what to do and one day without asking, I did this and hurt myself bad! It wasn’t worth it.
iStealSharpies 2 points 2y ago
Most of us had to learn the hard way :( it’s okay.

Why do you shake it though? If the drink was ordered no ice, wouldn’t stirring the espresso with the cinnamon and syrup and adding the oat milk achieve the same effect?
iStealSharpies 6 points 2y ago
Shaken espresso is made by shaking with ice and classic, and then poured in the cup then topped off with 2%. The person ordering this was probably thinking no ice=more drink and didn’t really think much more of it. A new barista on bar might see no ice and try to shake the no ice SHAKEN espresso. If they don’t want ice then they should just order hot espresso and they can stir it themselves. I’m just saying I would not ring this through the register to avoid confusion.

I agree a new barista might shake hot espresso without not knowing it’s a bad idea, but according to the weekly update no ice does equal more drink. You are supposed to assume mobiles want the room filled with milk and then if someone orders this in the store you ask if they want room or milk.

I don’t have an issue stirring a shaken espresso no ice though. It’s less work.

The weekly update says that about *light* ice, not no ice.
iStealSharpies 2 points 2y ago
Right but the thing is that i would ask the customer exactly what they mean by this and judging by if they want more milk then I would ring it though as a latte. It’s about communication. If they don’t want their drink shaken with ice then they don’t want a shaken espresso. Do you understand what I mean?

i also learned this the hard way.. fun times.

I still shake it with ice and then use the shaker lid to hold the ice back as I pour. And then I put the normal amount of milk in so they end up with a very empty cup
Kyenne_Pepper123 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
They wanted the regular one. And when we made him the latte he didn’t say anything
[deleted] 0 points 2y ago
The normal amount of milk is filling the cup to 1/4 inch from the rim
USplendid 7 points 2y ago
The recipe specifically calls for a *splash* of milk.

While “light ice” may be a bit of a gray area, if a customer tries to order a “no ice” iced shaken espresso you don’t pour 10+ ounces of milk in the cup. Completely changing the recipe. You encourage them to order a latte instead.
[deleted] 2 points 2y ago
The recipe card actually specifically says “top with oat milk to 1/4 inch below rim” I don’t know how a lot of people interpreted that to mean a splash.
iStealSharpies 2 points 2y ago
THIS. Precisely.
AvoFromCado 2 points 2y ago
Yeah I understand that but I believe that would be with ice included. If I poured that much milk into just shots with no ice it would be basically all milk and it wouldn’t even slightly resemble the original drink.
[deleted] 1 points 2y ago
The oat milk is built into the price and anything less would be a rip off. People are paying $5.45 just for a grande.
AvoFromCado 2 points 2y ago
Yeah I understand. Whenever this drink is ordered with no ice(it’s happened a few times) I always just explain it to them and I’ve never had a problem. If they want the cup full they can order a latte instead

Had a barista end up at the hospital because she did this and it got in her eyes. My SM said no shaking hot espresso with no ice. If they want no ice you shake it then strain it.
croissantboyy 3 points 2y ago
my favorite is when a customer mobile orders a frappuccino with no ice. i literally wait for them to get there to tell them i cannot make it without ice. if they keep insisting i make it i just flat out refuse. "make the moment right" isn't always possible lmao

People order this all the time. And they seem fine with a cup barely filled.
