is starbucks supposed to make you feel this guilty about calling out? (self.starbucksbaristas)

long story short, I got scheduled very last minute today for a covid shot. I got it, and now I’m terribly nauseous and have a bad headache after a few hours. I’m gonna take my temperature after writing this post, but even if I do have a fever I’m gonna feel so bad for calling out so last minute for my closing shift.

I’d look for coverage, but it’s already difficult enough because my manager does block scheduling to avoid potential spread of covid, and I know that none of the night shift block will want to use their day off (of course, I’ll ask anyways).... I just feel so guilty and for some reason it doesn’t feel like I should be...

It’s not just Starbucks, that’s capitalism in general that brainwashes you to feel that way.

You have an extremely valid reason for calling out. The covid vaccine is known to cause some less than desirable side effects which people at your store should be aware of.
It's not wrong to feel bad for your partners who may have some difficulty without you but they will make it work much better than you would by going in when you don't feel well. You matter too, and I hope you feel better soon!

If you don't feel well, you shouldn't feel bad for calling off. You had a reaction to a vaccine which is a completely valid reason to call off. Unfortunately our society has us conditioned to feel bad for calling off of work. Profit has been prioritized over human needs. No need to feel guilty. These things happen. I hope you feel better soon.

If you don’t think capitalism brainwashes people to think they have to work when sick and feel bad about it, you are also one that is brainwashed. They are very good with propaganda, I’ll give them mad props for that, so I don’t fault you for falling for it.

Yeah empathy is a part of it, but the other factor? Managers guilt trip you for one lol. People are forced to work when sick because what choice do they have when they need to make ends meet? Not everywhere offers sick time or enough pay to be able to take a day off. Some places require doctors notes but maybe they can’t afford that or can’t afford healthcare to see the doctor for the cold/flu/minor illness for a little note to prove they were ill.
Capitalism is a huge factor in this, and capitalism doesn’t have empathy anywhere in its system.

All this!^ Not to mention that most of these stores are understaffed. I know our store doesn't get enough people but that's not a reason to guilt trip a barista into coming in when they're not capable of doing their job. If capitalism didn't force store managers to have this bottom line mentality maybe we'd have more people on the clock and a call out wouldn't make such a big difference. Take this with a grain of salt, but after all it's supposed to be a manager's job to know how to deal with the situation.
