I’ve always thought it’s really odd that I’ve seen professional chefs wearing nail polish while cooking yet somehow *we’re* at risk of somehow contaminating peoples food/drinks? When we’re barely touching their stuff? Wat.
is_it_soy28 points2y ago
It’s not so much the risk of contamination as is the risk of being sued for “contamination “

Its crazy how strict starbucks is when almost every other food job, the workers have cute LONG acrylics.
CiTFiD43 points2y ago
Every food service job I've ever had including Starbucks has had a firm no nail polish policy. Im thinking the people you see with polish are just breaking code
MonstrousGiggling37 points2y ago
"Every other food job" Um...no. That's just blatantly wrong.
...that's a health code violation. So much gunk and germs gets caught even under cut nails, long nails are disgusting to have when handling other people's food.
ohnoifuckedupfr1 points2y ago
they’re only disgusting if you don’t wash your hands... which you should be doing in a kitchen but especially w covid.
Tall_Draw_5212 points2y ago
Nah, it turns out that the longer the nail, the more likely you are to harbor germs. There was a good public health study done on nurse's nails in the 90's.
Tall_Draw_5211 points2y ago
If it makes you feel better, the Cleveland Clinic bans long nails because of the nasty sh\*t that grows under them.
zoooooobee3 points2y ago
Thats nice at least. A lot of the nurses that come in always have french manis and it makes me so uncomfy :/
Tall_Draw_5212 points2y ago
Probably in primary care it’s not as big of a deal but at hospitals it is. People pick up infections in hospitals all the time and die from them. Pretty serious.
cancel9419 points2y ago
In all my years working in food service both in and out of Starbucks, the job required no nail polish. It's a food safety thing.
FM_Casper13 points2y ago
The day I had a panic attack and quit my job at Starbucks, I got off the phone and just went and painted my nails. V soothing tbh.
sararhiannon__ [OP]13 points2y ago
“The day I had a panic attack and quit my job at Starbucks” if this doesn’t speak directly to what working here is like 😅
FM_Casper5 points2y ago
It's fun to make drinks I miss that part. And my team and shifts. That's about it😅
keithct62 points2y ago
can’t wait to put my piercings back on and not have to take them off the next morning hahahah
KJ2998SJ11 points2y ago
I simply don't get it. Like it's a food safety thing? If my nail polish is in the food and drinks, I think the bigger problem is that means my fingers are.
Stupid rule.
Blackberry-Party34 points2y ago
Your hands don’t have to be IN the drinks for the nail polish to chip off. It can chip off at any point and you won’t know when it chips or where that piece of polish lands 🤢. I definitely wouldn’t want to accidentally drink a piece of someone’s nail polish. Same reason you can’t wear rings/stones and such—they’ll fall off and you won’t know it.
It’s also unsanitary because germs can get underneath the paint and in the cracks and what not. Sure, the potential for that to happen underneath and around clean fingernails is still there but there are less layers and chips for bacteria to get itself into on a clean nail so less chance of contaminated hands. It’s just a health precaution and it looks cleaner to not have chipping, flaky colored nails anyway.
KJ2998SJ7 points2y ago
I mean I suppose it might chip. But in all my year of wearing nail polish it's never just spontaneously chipped off. It chips when you bang your nails on things or pick at things or scrape your nails.
Yeah if my nail polish is already chipped up and gross looking, that won't look good and it could potentially chip further, but a decent manicure isn't going to have cracks and chips to collect bacteria anymore than the natural nail would, and even then what does it matter if a microscopic bit of dirt is trapped somewhere on my nails - my nails aren't contacting the food or drink.
That being said, it's whatever. It's something I complain to myself about and if other people bring it up I air my grievance, but I'm not gonna start a protest or whatever. I just personally think it's stupid and not a food hazard. After all, there's a certain percentage of bugs that's allowed to be in food manufacturing before it's considered a health violation 😂 🤷♀️
Blackberry-Party9 points2y ago
Fair enough, I didn’t consider the bug thing but I guess that’s something that can’t be stopped by any individual, whereas you have the ability to just not wear nail polish. In all my years of wearing nail polish, I’ve had quite the opposite experience where all it ever does is chip! Listen, I love a good manicure like you, but maybe the bacteria will make you reconsider:
The CDC has done studies on the levels of bacteria that accumulate on nails and clean, trimmed nails have significantly less pathogens than acrylics or painted nails. It’s why nurses and doctors also only have clean nails. Chipped nail polish has been shown to foster microorganisms that remain even after hand washing.
On that note, I personally appreciate businesses who maintain rules like these when employees are touching my food... yes, you touch the cup, the lid, the rag that cleans the steam wand, etc. You might think it’s overkill, but don’t want to consume anyone’s nail polish microorganisms. I wouldn’t even want to consume my own!
KJ2998SJ4 points2y ago
That's fair. I guess just my prospective is that no matter how clean/sanitary a place tries to be there will always be some kind of contamination so nail polish isn't that big a deal. It just makes me sad that I can't paint my nails anymore - especially when I see so many customers with amazing nails!
But rules are rules and it is what it is I guess.
sararhiannon__ [OP]8 points2y ago
That’s why they say lol. The sani like deteriorates my hands though so like that’s more likely to make my nails fall into drinks HAHAH
cush49 points2y ago
Nail polish drama is exhausting. Take the food supervisor exam and learn the disgusting things about your nails. Stop the drama follow dress code. Next.
lilkiosk4 points2y ago
Not me getting a full set today before my shift because I don’t even care anymore.

As someone with anxiety who will bite their nails till they bleed unless I have SNS it's frustrating to be one of the partners at my store who follows the rules.
laspn-6 points2y ago
I work almost every shift in the day. That being said I see all of my SMs like at least twice a week. The night shift SMs are a lot looser at my store
