This has probably been posted a million times but I’m new. Does anyone else feel bad pouring the amount of ice into cups that’s actually meant for that cup size? I feel horrible when people watch me make their drink and see that 3/4 of the cup gets filled with ice. But I don’t want to give everyone lite ice cause I’ll probably get scolded. But it’s ridiculous. I always feel a little regret.

No. I wouldn’t waste guilt on something so silly especially since you’re not in charge of the drink recipe.
is_it_soy42 points2y ago
And especially because the customer is free to order as little ice as they want.
vanbibs2234 points2y ago
I always feel disappointed when I get light ice. To me, ice makes the beverage taste infinitely better. Just make it to standard, they're there for a reason. If they want light ice, they can order it with light ice.

I'm on the opposite end of you - I will always prefer light ice. However! Much like you, there are ice lovers out there who will prefer their drink with extra ice! So yes, to OP: Make the drink to the standard recipe. If they don't like it they can either express their concern and you can adjust on the fly, or they can order it with light ice

The amount of ice can also mess with the proportions. If I’m getting an iced latte with no or little ice and therefore extra milk it waters down the coffee taste and so if someone gives me light ice without me asking them to it changes the taste of the drink
vanbibs221 points2y ago
Exactly! I want to taste the coffee. And I want it to actually be cold.

do not feel bad and please do not make all the drinks with light ice. the other day a lady came by and got mad we made her drink the correct way because she didn’t ask for light ice, but “my drink is NEVER this full of ice so it’s wrong.” having to remake an entire drink for the amount of ice is not only irritating on its face, but a waste of my time.

I hear you, but we don’t make those decisions, we don’t get paid to ‘think’ just do
Shin-Zantesu1 points2y ago
That's actually not correct, this job in fact requires a lot of thinking and sometimes problem solving Just think about the "human" connections between customers and partners (or even between partners alone), that requires thinking
I'll agree with you on the fact that we don't get paid to make those decisions, there are people (in theory) way more prepared for this subject that get paid more to handle these

As a former bartender, as well, the ice (and amount thereof) are integral to getting the right ratios for the correct flavour. Don't stress about it. If they wanted less, they'd ask for it.
Gameb0i65 points2y ago
Nah. I don’t feel bad at all. They don’t like it they can ask for light ice next time.
creepygirl4204 points2y ago
I feel bad sometimes too but it’s not that hard to order with light ice so don’t worry about it. If they don’t like the amount of ice they can just order it light next time.
MoodyStarGirl3 points2y ago
Dont assume someone wants less ice. If they wanted less ice, they'd ask for less ice.
jupiter_bug3 points2y ago
Not really, if someone wants light ice they can just ask for it.
sstcyr3 points2y ago
Nope, the ice makes the drink taste right. Otherwise it's getting extra milk or extra base or what have you and it throws off the flavor.

Feelingl bad about Starbucks making a large profit on overloading with ice and not paying its full-timers ya know the face of the company living wage.🥴
Crowchick17313 points2y ago
I do, sometimes. I also sorta suck at ice like with drinks that cold foam/cold brews. I've accidentally lite iced a few there. Im also a blonde bean (is that a thing? I have about a years experience now)
dwightshru2 points2y ago
I used to feel like this and then I realized customers don’t give a **** about us
always_hungryy2 points2y ago
The beverage taste the way it does because the ice is included in the ratios. If you change the recipe the drink won’t taste the same. The people that want lite or no ice will ask for it. Don’t feel bad for making the drinks to order. There are plenty of other stresses that will come with this job, try not to make things as hard on yourself
kxnkycxrly2 points2y ago
eh. I like my drinks extra extra cold. I don’t mind. and I especially like to give them extra ice when they ask for trenta refreshers with no water 🙄
the_price_is_right961 points2y ago
I usually give most people about half the ice it calls for, unless they ask for extra ice.

I just started a couple weeks ago, but I work at one inside a grocery store and they scold me for every little thing (like giving someone a tall scoop of ice), or filling to the max line instead of the venti line when steaming milk because it often doesn’t fill the cup but “wastes product” :)
givemeapples7 points2y ago
You might not be aerating the drink enough if the amount of liquid doesn't fill the cup. The pitcher markers are designed with the intention of the aeration making up for that difference in volume
Tall_Draw_5212 points2y ago
Took me months to get it right!!
ImpressiveVariation0-6 points2y ago
Honestly for the most part I give everyone light ice unless they ask for extra
