Has anyone else’s view of people just completely changed for the worse after working at Starbucks during the pandemic. Like the amount of selfish, entitled, and rude customers I’ve dealt with on a daily basis has just made me so bitter toward people
designated-grapes140 points2y ago
I'm high risk working for the Siren so I can afford health insurance.
I closed the DT window on someone yesterday because they were arguing with me on why I wouldn't take the cup they drank out of to toss.
I'm sick and tired of people not giving a fuck about service workers' safety and health. I'm tired of being told to "make the moment right" even if it means putting our fucking health in danger. The blatant disregard for disabled folks is mind boggling but not surprising at the same time.
imeanitpeanut43 points2y ago
We were never allowed to take trash at the drive through window. It’s a health code violation. The number of times I’ve seen people litter after telling them that at my old drive through store was ridiculous. I’m glad I transferred to a cafe store before the pandemic, but I still have to tell people at register that I can’t take their trash.
xiew17 points2y ago
Next time a cop rolls through offer license plate number and they can pull cameras and issue tickets as needed.
xiew8 points2y ago
If they litter just loudly read out their license plate.
Loose-Thoughts56 points2y ago
And killing them with kindness/biting my tongue is seriously deteriorating my mental health.. all for some damn score/surveys
richayy4204 points2y ago
Why does our score/survey reflect on the customer experience? Have our higher ups ever taken a quiz, ever realize that one little uncontrolled circumstance can cause people triggers to set off. People who seriously cannot control them either due to such a lack of mental health resources. We’re pushing out hundreds of coffees sometimes within the hour to never fall behind once & they expect us to have perfect scores under 6 aspects. Not only is that nearly impossible how can 3 people which is not many fill 3 task while simultaneously working a mile and a minute. (Sorry your comment really just told me I needed to rant) Have a good day!
Loose-Thoughts6 points2y ago
Starbucks has benefits to save their own ass. If you ever reached a breaking point and wanted to quit due to your mental health, you get, “well, it’s not our fault you didn’t use Lyra for free.” As if Lyra can solve all your life problems.
RepStewart36 points2y ago
Yeah, absolutely.
Realistic_Squash_95 [OP]35 points2y ago
I’m always this close👌🏼to throwing hot coffee in someone’s face
RepStewart33 points2y ago
I’ve honestly just started giving people the same respect they give me. If they wanna get an attitude so can I, I don’t care.
cringeqween1333 points2y ago
I wish I had the courage to do that, but since it would most likely cost me my job with how rude some people are I've settled for giving people the same energy they give me. I'll start off as my normally bubbly self with a smile but if someone is rude or just not responding I drop the extra bubblyness and leave it with what's required. "You ordered this....that'll be $$$....here ya go...have a good day" I can be a pretty pessimistic person internally so it helps to not waste that joy.
Big-Marsupiall1 points2y ago
Do it
46patisse0 points2y ago
More upvotes when you finally do it!!
e-sackett-1634 points2y ago
Yup. I literally quit my location because the customers literally bullied me and since I was a shift I had to deal with them. I worked in guest services for five years, but Starbucks has some of the worst people I’ve honestly ever seen. I’m at a Tarbucks now and I’m 10000% happier and actually get treated with respect
blobinsky3 points2y ago
This!! I’ve had the same experience, you still get a few nasty guests at target but overall they’re so much nicer than the ones you’d get at a corporate store!
Bwaybelter22 points2y ago
For some reason people keep leaving their half-finished drinks AT HANDOFF today?? Why am I having to go throw them away when we have five different garbage cans on the path to the exit???
MoreCoffeeWillHelp6 points2y ago
We havent had seating open since last summer and everyone has to wear a mask inside, so no drinking at all. I’m honestly shocked to remember some people are actually dealing with this at this stage..
ilholtstilin19 points2y ago
Not trying to polish the turd too much but I feel the goodness of my coworkers just about balances out the badness of customers but holy fuck is it ever a close call.
imeanitpeanut11 points2y ago
Polish the turd, I’ve never heard that before it’s hilarious.
ilholtstilin3 points2y ago
Interesting! I guess it could be regional; I’m from the Midwest. We’re folksy.
imeanitpeanut1 points2y ago
Maybe, I’m from New England.
46patisse2 points2y ago
OMG - I can't even imagine how bad people in NE behave!!
[deleted]18 points2y ago
Starbucks promote self-entitlement with their product and attracts this type of rude, shallow assh\*le. I would encourage you to visit (or better yet, consider working!) at a small local coffee roaster, where people drink just.... coffee!
Obamnasoda46 points2y ago
And, at a local place like that, customers have nothing to compare their drinks to. If I make a pink drink with 2 fewer strawberries than the Starbucks down the street, customers will have a heart attack. But if they’ve never had it before, like would be the case at a local shop, they’d never know the difference of if it’s up to “their standards” or not. All they’d know is the drink tastes good.
nikkicarter11116 points2y ago
I wish I could, but the few local shops around me I’ve applied to don’t provide health insurance for employees because they’re small enough to get away with it.
Obamnasoda44 points2y ago
I never thought about this, you’re totally right
Tara_Kitten17 points2y ago
Yep. I'm never on register anymore because I get completely drained & anxious. I had a commissioned-based sales job before this, yet this is the one that really caused me to hate people.
espressoaddicted15 points2y ago
You almost have to feel bad for people sometimes who are so incredibly rude to a total stranger serving them coffee. It’s insane. :(
_dadragon8 points2y ago
Seriously. Like what is going on with these peoples lives that they need to act like that? You try to give them the benefit of the doubt but jeez people, get some self awareness.
amethyst-s0ul14 points2y ago
holy crap. i thought i was the only one. i was literally just thinking about this yesterday. i got hired at a cafe starbucks pre-covid (oct 2019) and i don’t ever remember dealing with so many rude customers. i truly believe the whole environment has changed BIG TIME. i also feel like all these tik-tok drinks add an unnecessary addition. like—— do you really need to blend EVERY SINGLE drink and add vscf on top????
Realistic_Squash_95 [OP]10 points2y ago
TIKTOK DRINKS ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. I’m really glad that a lot of people agree with me about viewing people different but not so glad that people are so rude everywhere!!
ulrickofskyrim2 points2y ago
Wait. When did tiktok drinks happen? All we had were the old joke, take all of the caramel with you Karen, drink. I'm serious
Realistic_Squash_95 [OP]1 points2y ago
Bless your soul
ulrickofskyrim1 points2y ago
At this point I'm too afraid to ask again or even search it
cringeqween1312 points2y ago
I've had 3 other jobs before working at Starbucks and they've all been customer service positions. I've come to the point where I don't question the extent of people's knowledge or kindness because (as sad as it is) if you expect people to have some semblance of common sense and common decency you'll be left disappointed.
greyplains5 points2y ago
All the sense in the world, and none of it is common...
Prysmm2460110 points2y ago
My view of people has definitely changed. I used to give most people the benefit of the doubt. Not anymore. I just assume everyone is a selfish, rude entitled snot because that’s how they all act.
Avuneon9 points2y ago
I wore a pin that said "Mask it or casket" when I was on DT
Realistic_Squash_95 [OP]3 points2y ago
That’s amazing. My manager flipped when I wore a pin with my schools logo on it so if I wore that she might have a heart attack
Avuneon7 points2y ago
My manager liked it, and actually bought extras for my co-workers
espresso_messo6 points2y ago
I can't imagine actually having a cool manager. You are #blessed
Green_barista_front2 points2y ago
Where did you get that pin from?
Gameb0i68 points2y ago
They were like that way before the pandemic. They just got worse cuz of the pandemic.
Realistic_Squash_95 [OP]5 points2y ago
I worked at a Starbucks on a college campus before, only transferred because the pandemic shut that store down and then I graduated. What a change. Awkward college students to adults, insane
bemmert996 points2y ago
I’m going to school for victim studies and it really made me question if I wanted a career in helping people. I quit because it was really snuffing my passion
LindaFromAccounting_6 points2y ago
some situations people freak out about are new and childish but honestly people have always been pretty shit so im not surprised but I definitely have less patience for it so I think I express frustration a lot more.
bjorksbutthole4 points2y ago
i started four days ago and a few people already have been vicious. so that’s fun
4filth2 points2y ago
Honestly working here during this pandemic has turned me into an incredibly cynical and jaded person. Awful
DebJel2 points2y ago
Yes! 💯
Yurodivy19062 points2y ago
Yes. Yes. Yes.
MaralosaKingdom1 points2y ago
I already disliked people before working here. Now I dislike them even more.
dcho941 points2y ago
Sometimes it's not even the customers but the peolle that i work with that stress me out on the daily.. i really would punch them if i could while working
Avuneon1 points2y ago
Oh, he wasn't. It was one of very few points in his favour
Avuneon1 points2y ago
I found it on Etsy
randomhoe9991 points2y ago
This was me at the beginning of the pandemic now I’m trying to be more empathetic
