just got in trouble for calling off (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by denahom-chikn
as i was getting ready for work i threw up so obviously i had to call off (it was within a half hour of my shift starting because i was just getting ready to walk out the door when it happened). so i followed all the protocol, sent a message in the group chat to try to find coverage, called the store to inform them, all that. then i got a text from my sm telling me that it was unacceptable and we would be having a talk when i got back to work. so definitely glad that i get to be in trouble because i’m sick🙃

Bring your employee handbook or print off the page from the internet detailing the protocol for calling off. Show that you did every step, screen shot the text and the record that you called the store. If your SM still tries to punish you, take that to your DM. If they ignore you, call PCC. The policies are in place for a reason and you can fight the abuse.

100% store managers try to make it like it’s your responsibility to find coverage for your shift when it’s an UNFORESEEABLE event that made you have to call out. Stand your ground.

This.

Also, bosses and other will always be pissed when someone calls off.
They’re supposed to be professional and not take it out on you but the world is full of jerks.
Do print off the procedures etc but then also shrug it off. You’ll have to get used to doing that.

Follow the suggestion of taking the page from the partner handbook like someone else recommended. And if that's not enough, $1 They can't get you in trouble for following federal guidelines, and if they try, escalate to the DM. You have a valid reason to be calling out rn.

Send her a selfie next to the vomit :)

This is 100% something I would do, I'd throw it in the group chat too.

maybe if SMs knew how to properly staff a store, it wouldn’t be such a big fricken deal that you had to call out, which was the right thing to do.
Tall_Draw_521 1 points 2y ago
Amen.
astivana 17 points 2y ago
It is 100% not okay for the SM to try to punish you for being sick and you should go over their head if they try. You’re not even obligated to try to find coverage if you’re calling out sick, so you already went above and beyond.

My SM doesn't like when employees can't cover a shift. She has been known to have talks with them about their unreliability and concerning behavior for not covering a shift at the last minute. Some people, just have expectations that are unrealistic.
DaybreakNightfall 9 points 2y ago
Yeah that wouldn't fly. Schedule me if you need me to work. If I'm *able* to cover a shift, I will, otherwise schedule better.

#ScheduleBetter should be a GD hashtag.

Bring the bucket of vomit to your SM

It’s sad because it’s still a pandemic. If you’re sick, there’s no way you should be coming to work like that and risk everyone’s health. Mine passive aggressively threatened to cut hours for employees who called out sick more than once.

A lot of great advice in this thread. Stand your ground friend, self-advocation will be your greatest weapon in this and any other company you work for.

I think I need this PCC number!! We had the store manager called and say it was ok to have a partner work today with a fever and sore throat! Luckily the shift was smart enough to send her home and is now worried she will get in trouble. I find this ridiculous! I refuse to work with someone sick. We tried to call the SM and DM but of course no answer
PrettySax3 4 points 2y ago
Its 888 728 9411 (888-SBUX-411) then option 1 for English and option 3 for PCC. (At least that what it is for retail)

What your SM did is ridiculous, definitely report that shit

Especially now because it’s technically a potential sign of covid... wtf that’s whack

My last sm was fired on the spot for having an employee work after they said they were sick, the employee ended up throwing up in the store, it was a huge thing
colonade17 4 points 2y ago
Email your DM, and contact partner resources to complain about this. When you call out sick it is only your responsibility to promptly notify the store. You are not responsible for finding coverage, that's management's job to figure out. And retaliation or negative consequences for a legitimate use of sick time is prohibited retaliation by starbucks policy, and in some jurisdiction it is also illegal.

Much like everyone else said you should be fine. If you are sick/ vomiting you should not be at work for health code reasons.

But.... with that said if a person has a history of calling out, let’s say 6 times in the past 3 months, you will be in trouble with inconsistent attendance. PRC, RM, and DM will all usually back up a separation with a partner who is inconsistent in their attendance. I know this is a big thing across the country if not world right now due to the pandemic, unfortunately some partners and we all know one at our store, that has or was taking advantage of the pandemic to call out a little more. So as long as this does not pertain to you, you should be ok. The SM is most likely going to have a conversation with you about calling out so they can be consistent with all partners when they call out. If they are not consistent there could be an issue on their hands not yours.

Contact your District manager. People call out for stupid reasons all the time. If you are sick it is not your responsibility to find coverage anyway which you even tried doing. Don’t worry you are not in the wrong here.

I was written up before for calling out because I threw up within a 24-hour time period of my shift. I called the store when they opened (also I was a borrowed partner there) and told my manager as well. both were angry about it. My manager said that I signed up to cover that shift and it was my responsibility to go. I’m like “uhh??? I literally threw up twice at 3am.”
they def overreacted cause my shift was at 1:30pm and I called the store at 5am to let them know. that’s plenty of time to find someone else to come in.
