cash tips ???? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Puzzleheaded-Fix-471
hi so this might be dumb but I have not gotten any transparency from my SSVs or anyone and I’m a new partner. I see where to declare cash tips, but what does that mean for it? Are the tips deducted from my next paycheck? Do I need to set them aside for taxes? What do I even do?

It’s not dumb.

If you make more than $20 a month in tips you must declare them YOURSELF to the IRS. Starbucks will not do that for you.

I can’t remember how if they are still imputing tips on your paycheck or not. If they are, you only have to declare anything more than the imputed amount. For example:
Last week you worked 8 hours. Starbucks taxed you for tips they assume you got at $.50 an hour. So $4 was added to your income *for tax purposes (not actually added because you got it in cash)*.

But you earned $26 in tips. It’s over $20, but you’ve already paid tax on $4 of it, so you declare $22 as income to the IRS.

Hope this helps.

thank you! i literally turned 18 yesterday so I’m still trying to figure out everything. by reporting to the IRS do you mean by inputting it on partner info?

Nah. You’ll have to complete a separate form at tax time. In the meantime, keep track of it. Who helps you with taxes? Parents? Tax company?

nobody at the moment. Parents did it till I turned 18, and now I’m on my own

Well, you could pay someone to do it or learn how to do them yourself. Udemy has a $17 course on how to do it. A lot of banks have some DIY articles too.

hey!!! so the tips system has changed quite a bit recently. customers can tip us either in cash or through the app, and you used to get your share of both of those ways weekly in cash. they’ve changed it now, so digital tips are added to your paychecks, and they get taxed the same way your paycheck does. so you don’t have to do anything for digital tips!

however, you still get cash tips in cash weekly. those are what you need to declare. whatever amount you get that week, is exactly what you declare on my partner info. if you are handed $10, claim $10.

also happy belated birthday!!! and welcome to the job!!!

every week on the store computer you have to go and just type in the amount of tips you got. starbucks used to do it for you but this last month they switched to you have to do it yourself now. it only works on a store computer tho
