Question from a Customer: Do you Prefer when we Mobile Order?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by narlycharley
My wife always mobile orders and pays through the app and it seems like if everyone did that, the drive through line would go much quicker. Thoughts?

Picking up mobiles from drive through is pretty neutral in terms of being helpful. On the plus side, it alleviates some pressure from the person making drive through drinks and allows them a moment to catch up.
On the negative, many people don’t follow the app’s guidelines stating that we need ~7-15 minutes to make the drink before they show up in the line. If someone places a mobile order and immediately hops in line to pick it up, we’re going to need to pull tickets ahead of their order to find it, messing up the flow and wasting time.
Despite it asking customers to specify where they want to pick their drink up (in store/cafe) it doesn’t actually mark their drink like that.
Hope this answers some questions :)

We had DT line wrapped around the building and 3 consecutive cars put mobile orders through IN LINE right before they got to the speaker box 🤦🏻♀️ It was my first Saturday morning shift too and we were (of course) short staffed - so it was chaos.

This may surprise customers but a lot of baristas actually hate mobile orders. They tend to throw us off our sequencing, they make it take longer for other customers to get their orders, and a lot of people behave super weirdly/rudely when they come to pick them up. I would be happy if I never had to deal with a mobile order ever again.
Also another huge issue is that mobile order take 5-15 minutes for us to complete but people always place their mobile order and then walk in/get in the drive thru 30 seconds later (I’m not kidding) and demand that it be ready that minute.
You’re very sweet for thinking of what’s easiest for your baristas! They would probably most appreciate in person orders :)

we had someone mobile order a traveler and jump in line IMMEDIATELY and was annoyed that we didn’t have it ready like what 😭😭

Yeah. It really depends on the store. We run 3 bars all day plus a double cold bar at peak and people order mobile like crazy. At our store they seem to think you should mobile order 10-15 drinks because that’s better for some reason but it only backs us up because they immediately get in drive through after placing.
What I would say is mobile order is fine. Just do everyone including yourself a favor and don’t be tempted to customize the ever loving shit out of your drinks because it reduces accuracy, makes most of the drinks worse (because mixologist and baristas spent years perfecting them) , and if you get 3 to 6 (no joke we have regulars that get 18-20 pumps of syrup in a venti) pumps of every syrup we offer I swear you can’t taste the blonde ristretto updosed anyways.

I hate mobiles. They screw with my sequencing and people use them as an excuse to go hog wild with customizations. Almost everyone ignores the app telling you to wait 8-15 minutes before showing up for you’re drink.
There are also those who show up and get mad if their mobile order isn’t ready by the time they get to the store, stuff happens, I’m sorry but two people mobile ordered 15 drinks in front of you so I had to make them first.

Wow. I am embarrassed to admit that I customize my drinks more when I place a mobile order than in person. But I usually just add a caramel drizzle and 2 more shots of whatever, so it isn't that much.

If its a small order yes

It’s like the same as ordering ahead at any other restaurant. You wouldn’t order 3 pizzas and then drive right over to pick it up. On the baristas side, I’m at a drive through store, customers literally take 5-10 minutes just to order when in drive through. They ask too many questions, too many customizations. SO if everyone ordered through the app, yes it would be a lot faster. Because all the ordering is done on the customers phone and not holding up the line.

Doesn't really matter so long as you give us a reasonable amount of time to make your order before you get here.
