ASM's are salaried and are also eligible for a retail incentive bonus like SM's (although the bonus percentage is less than a SM's). However (at least in my home state) they are not exempt from overtime rules, so they still have to clock in and out. Not sure if this is company-wide, but I know that when I was an SM, any overtime, especially for an asm was highly discouraged by the regional leadership, and often had to be approved by the dm in emergency situations. So it is pretty unlikely that you will be asked to work more than 40 hours and, if you are, you will be paid overtime. You will have training to do in addition to working shifts on the floor. Ideally you will be scheduled non-coverage time to practice some of the things that you will be learning like scheduling, interviewing etc.
