Idk where to post this...This is me, about 3 hours ago. Partner of almost 5 years, never happened before. My daughter is laos/Chinese so this hit me hard. I was just trying to stand up for the 2 Asian girls I work with. The way they cried is going to stick with me. (v.redd.it)

first off i’d like to say, you handled this so well and i’m proud of you for sticking up for your coworkers and yourself. i can tell that you’re great person and i’m genuinely so so sorry that you had to go through this ): you absolutely did not deserve it at all. it literally baffles me how older people can act this way and not feel one ounce of embarrassment. i hope you and everyone was okay after this!! sending you all of my love!! <3
Js_On_My_Yeet 114 points 2y ago
Good job for keeping your composure and standing up for what is right. Racists assholes are seriously the worst.

Hey corporate. Your partners don't deserve this shit. Your "third place" is going up in flames. Do better.
jgt913 68 points 2y ago
Hey friend, random guy on the internet and former partner here, you're a fuckin trooper. That was an absolute nightmare to listen to and may you never experience that again. Sending good vibes, my dude.
anonbarista_ [OP] 16 points 2y ago
Oh thank you so much! 🥰 really thank you. Tonight's rough not gonna lie.
anonbarista_ [OP] 41 points 2y ago
Here's a reply to someone else I made. They asked what happened before this. This is sort of what happened. Again, I don't fully remember, this was literally maybe a 2 or 3 minute interaction. He ran out of the store so fast after he threw whatever he had at us.
Sure, yeah I was the one on register so I had helped him before this encounter, he started rambling about how he killed JFK, JFK Jr and MLK. Fine whatever weirdo. And I gave him his water that he claimed he needed RIGHT NOW and he went out side. Came back in orders a water and decaf pour over. He again shouts he needs the water right now. So I begin to fill up a cup and hand it to him, he starts speaking Japanese and Korean to the girls. They are 18. And both philipina. They didn't respond and their lack of a response angered him, he called one girl an oriental bitch for "being rude" by not understanding Korean or Japanese. He started shouting more racial slurs about them, but to me. Then he demanded a refund and so I started it and started recording. There was more said by him but the girls started crying so I didn't hear him and I tried to just get the refund. One girl ran to the back and the other girl hugged me for like 2 minutes. The sound of her cry will sit with me forever. That shit was fucking extreme. This may not be the best reply sorry I truly can't remember bits and pieces exactly how they happened
Bubblebutt217 8 points 2y ago
First, you did great! I’m sorry you had to go threw that! Use Lyra if you need it. Seriously it helps.

Second, At our store we have permission to kick them out of the store and if they want a refund we give them the store managers card and tell them to leave. If they don’t we let them know the cops will be called.

No one under and circumstances deserves that treatment and he was clearly in the wrong. SMH The nerve of some people!
anonbarista_ [OP] 5 points 2y ago
Oh! I have been on Lyra over a year actually! MY therapist is definitely gonna hear about this. It was just 4 of us females and not a single customer so we really didn't know wtf to do. One girl had already ran to the back crying and one girl happened to be in the bathroom at the time. I couldn't think to male any choices if im honest. Just please share this for me. Im too scared to send it to corp myself
El_Gabe69-420 3 points 2y ago
As a fellow partner, I was pretty certain you were obviously in the right here, but DAMN was a curious about the details. I'm sorry you and the other two had to endure this crazy old jackass. Major props to you handling it so well. Please make sure the girls see all the support you three have!
AmaraDarluck 3 points 2y ago
I know this has been said already, but thank you for watching out for them, and being a great coworker. I've had to deal with similar issues like this, (not at bucs though) and this is the best way I've seen this handled. I'm glad it didn't get any worse then this and I hope that this kind of instance never happens to the three of you again.
2011FordEscape 40 points 2y ago
you handled this well but i’m so sorry this happened to you. this makes me very very upset and unfortunately this kind of hatred is heating up. i hope u guys are doing okay ☹️
anonbarista_ [OP] 27 points 2y ago
Thank you! I should have clarified, I am Caucasian. And the girls I intervened for were Asian. They are hurting so much worse. Thank you so much, 🥰 spread love.
kaefeen 1 points 2y ago
It’s nice to see someone white stand up for POC and I’m sorry you had to deal with this aggression while trying to defend your coworkers. I just would also like to inform you that Caucasian isn’t the correct term to use. Caucasians are actually asians. The term caucasian originated from the caucasus mountains in ancient Armenia which are located in west asia...hence the term caucASIAN, but for some reason, americans completely changed the meaning of the word and use it for white people. Caucasians are middle eastern. Not trying to be rude or deflect from the situation but just wanted to help an educate. Thanks for being brave and sharing this with us too :)
anonbarista_ [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Oh you're totally fine! Thank you for educating me. Man, now I feel bad. Shit. I had no idea. Thank you!
kaefeen 1 points 2y ago
Nooo you’re totally okay you don’t have to feel that bad because you didn’t know and thanks again for being nice about it!
anonbarista_ [OP] 29 points 2y ago
I'm not sure if it was obvious or not, but I am Caucasian, and the girls I intervened for were Asian. The ones who got the worst of it. But thank you all for your kind words I didn't expect this. ❤
Bokonon10 16 points 2y ago
This is the thing I'm not excited for once I start at Starbucks. When I was at my old job(Chipotle Manager) I had the power to just kick people out when they acted unreasonably. Having to risk having managers who might not back me/my coworkers up isn't gonna be fun.
anonbarista_ [OP] 23 points 2y ago
Unfortunately I work evenings and the manager had just left. Her and our district manager both showed up under 10 minutes after I called the store manager. It was appreciated for sure. They helped us close, 3 hours early.
bitter-barista 2 points 2y ago
Hey Starbuddy💚. My heart breaks for you and my fellow partners wherever you are. I'm so sorry this happened to you guys. First, lemme send you guys all the love. Second, I know a lot have mentioned it and you've voiced your hesitation, but report this to corporate asap. You mentioned how your manager and DM showed up, that's the support friend. You handled the situation with such grace, you've got support already hunni. Make sure the incident is documented! Trust me 1000%, nothing is coming back on you negatively. All the praise and gold stars for ya boo. There's no room for that behavior, we aren't paid enough to deal with it, and we are human beings who deserve better. Cheers Starbuddy, keep your head high
lightofyourlifehere 7 points 2y ago
You absolutely do have the authority to do that here at starbucks. Its actually one of the reasons I am a returning partner. Other companies do not allow to stand up for yourself the way starbucks has let me.
lsweat13 15 points 2y ago
WOW I’m so sorry that happened to you. Some people can be so incredibly cruel
Brudda-Seb 12 points 2y ago
This is absolutely disgusting to hear. I’m so sorry that you had to deal with a racist asshole. He had no reason to bring race into anything, let alone say offensive things about someone’s race. You standing up for them is what I call being a good person, and not many people have the decency to do it. I applaud you, and I hope your coworkers know that they are appreciated!
Leeharp92 10 points 2y ago
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I want to cry and give you a hug! I have never, ever, heard or witnessed a partner handle such a horrible person so perfectly. In my 5 years people were always so terrified to speak up about any mistreatment. You are a wonderful human and coworker this world has needed ❤️
anonbarista_ [OP] 10 points 2y ago
Thank you so much! I really just want this to reach starbucks without it back firing on me. That's why I posted it. Idk how to make that happem
voxinx 9 points 2y ago
Hope your sm and dm are not only supporting you through this experience, but also those 2 other partners affected by his shitty behavior. Old people are intolerable at this point, dealt with so many batty old fucks lately.
Kambamthin 8 points 2y ago
Can I ask what happened before this?
anonbarista_ [OP] 10 points 2y ago
Sure, yeah I was the one on register so I had helped him before this encounter, he started rambling about how he killed JFK, JFK Jr and MLK. Fine whatever weirdo. PhysicalSand2 4 points 2y ago
You are a hero, I really mean that. You should be so proud of yourself.
anonbarista_ [OP] 6 points 2y ago
Ha I mean, nooooo totally not a hero just being a decent human. But I appreciate the gesture thank you. Like I said, the girls he was coming after deserved better.
PhysicalSand2 3 points 2y ago
I hear you. I still think you're amazing! Not everyone would speak up like you did, that takes courage. I keep rewatching to hear the "NO you don't get to be racist in here!" Passed the vid along to my sis who is a partner in FLA
Kambamthin 2 points 2y ago
I’m sorry that’s awful, some people really just have problems
tbch9 2 points 2y ago
Doesn’t matter. He was making racist remarks to the partners who were serving him, and then threw a tantrum when he didn’t get his way right away. That is never EVER a correct response, no matter the situation that proceeded it.
Kambamthin 3 points 2y ago
I agree, but I’m just curious as to how this escalated to this.
PhysicalSand2 6 points 2y ago
(Racist white old man)
sweetyang 8 points 2y ago
Good on ya! You did amazing and the right thing, it my not mean much coming from a random person on reddit. But I'm proud of you and what you did.
Allison_82 5 points 2y ago
I almost cried listening to this. What a fucking asshole!! I would’ve walked out after that.... never had an experience this bad
capybaraRage 3 points 2y ago
I'm so absolutely fucking livid for you. Thank you for keeping your composure and standing up for your partners. I wish I could have been beside you to help. Keep being amazing.
thebeancakes 3 points 2y ago
Man's clearly got mental problems
tbch9 3 points 2y ago
You handled that with grace my friend. I’m sorry that happened to yourself and your partners, but I’m so proud of you for standing up.
cringeqween13 2 points 2y ago
I am so sorry you and your coworkers had to deal with this. If you haven't already I would talk to your SM or DM about refusing service if he come back
67bella 2 points 2y ago
oh my god...this brought tears to my eyes, how can people be so horrible? you handled this wonderfully, thank you for standing up to him. I hope everyone at your store is okay
arkkthealien 2 points 2y ago
Ugh dude these people are out of control. Jesus I’m sorry
aGrapeInUtero 2 points 2y ago
I am so sorry that this happened and I’m glad you recorded it. Much love. You don’t deserve this. 💛 Starbucks helps me lose more and more faith in humanity everyday.
radical-monster 2 points 2y ago
You did the right thing
taemineatsants 2 points 2y ago
it's insane that we have to put up with behavior like this so often. i'm so sorry :(
lightofyourlifehere 2 points 2y ago
I'm vibrating with rage after watching that. So fucked. Just so you know, when a costumer is acting like that, your not even obligated to give a refund. I totally get that sometimes its just the easiest way to get them out of your store, but you would also be well within your rights to tell him if he doesn't stop shouting that you will not be giving him a refund and instead be calling the cops. For me personally, its so much harder for me to let them treat me or my baristas that way and think that there will be no repercussions. Fucking assholes. This is why I feel so lucky to work at a store in a tightnite community. People keep their shit together a little more if they plan on seeing you the next day.
anonbarista_ [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I didnt even realize that, you're right. I dodnt have to refund him. He never did get the refund though he didn't put his card in. Feel free to share this I want it to reach corp but im too scared.
lightofyourlifehere 1 points 2y ago
Don't be scared. Its easy to have this idea of corporate as big bad punishers, but they care more than you think. At the very least, they care about their image as a company that treats their partners well and does not tolerate that kind of behavior. As someone who is trying to work up to corporate, I can tell you that if they saw this video their response would likely to be to one ban that gentleman from starbucks, and two, to congratulate you for standing up for your fellow partners and remaining calm in a stressful situation. You did everything right, and have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Edit: I don't know where you are from, but I came from a store up i Washington. A couple years ago there was an situation at a store in our district where a partner was accused of being racist. They made a whole thing of it. Literally shut down all of the stores in the district for a day to give us diversity training. Starbucks is very invested in their image as a liberal company with 0 tolerance policy when It comes to discrimination. They will absolutely have your back on this. Especially since you where smart enough to get it on tape.
anonbarista_ [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I know corp isn't that big bad idea but I've been with the company almost 5 years and I've seen some rougish shit ya know that's all. Just weary. Im sorry you all had to deal woth that!
lightofyourlifehere 1 points 2y ago
Eh, I'm not. I got paid for the training and was happy to know that these situations get taken seriously. I'm sorry you had to deal with what you did, I've been with the company for about 4 years now and although I've had bad costumers your video really takes the cake.
cush4 2 points 2y ago
I’m sorry this happened to you he clearly lacks critical thinking and appears unstable.
cypherlex 2 points 2y ago
Sending you guys so much love- I am so sorry you had to experience this. You are beyond brave for standing up to him, and for trying to educate him the best that you could- especially given the circumstances.
cosmichouseplant 2 points 2y ago
I’m so proud of you! What a racist asshat. Thank you for being an ally and standing up for your fellow partners. Corporate needs to listen up and DO SOMETHING because it’s way too much to bear this shit on the regular. Sending healing vibes, friendo ♥️
kat833 2 points 2y ago
I'm proud of you I know this wasn't easy but you handles it well you are amazing don't forget to fill our your insident report so corporate knows what happened and you can get in trouble when he calls back later good luck💗
nedcoleman 2 points 2y ago
Highest respect to you and your partners, so sorry, these are the unstable people in our world that are so unpredictable, you were profesional in every way. Hope he never returns.
zach0605 2 points 2y ago
some people are awful, im so sorry you and your team had to experience something like that :(
Different_Story_2465 2 points 2y ago
You did exactly what you should have. I’m thankful that we are empowered as partners to refuse hateful customers. Our cafe’s rule is we tell you to leave nicely once..: after that we tell you to leave however we’d like 🙃
too-Affectionate 2 points 2y ago
I am so sorry you had to put up with this omg
Kristotf 2 points 2y ago
Sounds like so many people that come in every day. You handled it well. Try to take it easier for a little, if it'll help.
VelvetMobius 1 points 2y ago
Bless you and I hope they trespassed his effin ass hate should not be allowed ever and definitely not with coffee 🥺 sending love and espresso thank you for fighting back
Boomdoke -8 points 2y ago
I don’t know if this will make me sound like an asshole but in my time I’ve learned how to calm down some men like this. I’ve found that older men that tend to hold more traditional values respond well to having an “man to man” with another guy and just pet the ego a little. It varies person to person but guys like this might hold the mentality that they must be strong so I would have calmly told him that he needs to “man up” and be reasonable. That might have calmed him. If not then thats why I’m not a shift after all this time I take the fall when I need to if it means protecting my team from people like that.
anonbarista_ [OP] 15 points 2y ago
I'm a woman, I am uninterested in feeding any male ego for any reason regardless if I am clocked in or not. And what I will not put up with is racism and bullying. My daughter is laos/Chinese and had already witness similar shit herself at 9 years old. My goal was never to calm him my goal was to get him to leave and calm my girls down. They were my priority.
Boomdoke -2 points 2y ago
Thats completely understandable. I was mostly saying what I’ve noticed might’ve worked from my personal experience. At my store whenever a customer gets heated I usually take over because I feel the same as you, it is completely unacceptable for anyone to speak like that to us, and I have no issues lying to their face or stroking their ego to calm things down. And if it doesn’t work then I’m more than happy to take the fall for my coworkers.
anonbarista_ [OP] 5 points 2y ago
I understand now. My apologies. I do the same. I'm not even a shift yet. But it's my crew I gotta stand up for my crew.
Boomdoke 0 points 2y ago
Absolutely nothing but respect from me for standing up for your crew!

Okay but I think that calling the guy racist did nothing but escalate the situation. Even if he is you probably should have just given him his money back so he would leave. I mean once you got it out first of course. The guys being completely impatient and he's getting his way. Not saying that you handled it wrong or anything but I personally think that calling him racist was a bit unnecessary.
anonbarista_ [OP] 13 points 2y ago
That whole time I was waiting for him to put his card in for the refund. Unfortunately I didn't get to record the whole conversation. Watching my girls cry behind the bar because of his racism is what's unnecessary. Before this video, they were already terrified, they were already hurt. The least I could do is call him out. That's the LEAST I could do.
