Smoking at the DT window... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by oc_ua
Unholy customizations aside... this is probably my biggest pet peeve at Starbucks. It is rare that a customer spends more than a few minutes in our DT from start to finish (corporate has made sure of that through endlessly pushing drive times). So is it really too much to ask that people wait to light their damn cigarette until after they have gotten their orders? Beyond the fact that it's rude af, If we aren't allowed to wear scented lotions or perfume because of how it may taint the taste of the coffee, how are customers allowed to literally blow smoke in our faces and into the store?! I rarely if ever try to connect with these people, as I feel the need to close the window to keep the smoke out of our store. Please tell me this bothers someone else as much as it bothers me... I feel like I'm going crazy.

You can ask them to put out their cigarette/vape/anything like that! It’s not allowed within 25? feet of the store (You should have signs that state so on the front entrance and it should apply to your whole area where it can affect customer/partner experience and/or health) - I’ve thrown out a “if you could just put out that cigarette before you get to the window thanks” on DTO and usually customers are understanding.

i have a regular that is generally nice but sometimes gets bold and tries to smoke, and i ALWAYS deny her and ask her to put it out. i have a terrible history with second hand smoke and i really should not be breathing in more of it and i won’t tolerate it

We have an older store that is DT/Walk up only, as in no customers allowed inside ever, so people usually don't stick around long. We also do not have the nicer menu boards on DT with the camera built in so we can't see that they're smoking until they get to the window. Anyhow, we have no such signage. In fact, I don't think I've seen signs like that at any Starbucks in my area. When I asked SM said I wasn't allowed to ask them not to smoke since they're in their car. 🙃

sorry to hear that your SM values a customer smoking a cancer stick over your team’s health. :(

That really sucks they aren’t taking aims to properly protect you guys :(. That’s really unfortunate and not very good SM stuff, I would maybe refer directly to the policy (it’s under smoke free workplace standard on the hub) and try one more time with your Sm. If they don’t respond appropriately and you are able to (i know it’s not fun doing this and you can ask a SSV to help if they can as they might already have more regular communication upwards), I would escalate the situation as it is not fair to your partners or customers and you shouldn’t be alone in enforcing the policy (there should be standardized signage for it and generally that’s easiest to help enforce).

I have been a shift at our store for the last year and a half, we have gone through 4 SM's in that time for various reasons, and our current SM is relatively new to the job. So I always like to ask her about policy to be sure I am not coaching things she doesn't agree with. (She has lots of extra rules that are not corporate policy.) When I asked her about it, as this is a more recent issue, she said we are absolutely not allowed to ask them to stop. I have set up a meeting with her next week to talk about a few barista concerns, and I plan to bring it up again. Thank you for the info, I will be sure to take a look at those policies before our meeting!

If she refuses, point out that many jurisdictions even prevent smoking near openings too. Not just the doorways.

Reverse Uno Card: violated third place for all other users.

ummm, they aren’t. you aren’t allowed to smoke on starbucks property. my coworkers who smoke have to walk off the premises to smoke. you have the right to ask them to put it out before you serve them.

People are fucking idiots. If you wouldn't smoke inside a store, don't do it in the drive through. This is a food establishment, that is disgusting. Same selfish people who blow secondhand smoke into their kids faces and refuse to roll down the window to let the smoke out.

I was under the impression that since they’re in their car, we can’t control it. Like how we can’t require masks in the DT. It sucks, but I always just tell them I’m closing the window and hope to have them gone soon.

i feel this x100.

it is not only disrespectful and unhealthy, but it is illegal. and yet, i’m not allowed to say anything.
