Nobody called or texted me, and we were open as usual yesterday 🙂🙂 Thanks starbucks (specifically my SM&DM), very cool!
ranbara [OP]44 points2y ago
Update: Everybody but me knew, someone has covid, and we're not allowed to know who :) (I'm sure the shifts all know and are lying about it, just not telling the baristas) Thanks starbucks, very cool!
cryptidmother28 points2y ago
this is a super frustrating situation 100%, but it’s a hipaa violation for your manager to share who has tested positive. i don’t doubt that your shifts/manager are shady sometimes but i don’t think this is an example of that shadiness, they’re literally not allowed to communicate it to anyone.
Disastrous_Excuse2473 points2y ago
That’s weird. When I got Covid everyone at my store knew and they all checked up on me. It definitely helped me get through those two hard weeks. Anyways that hella sucks that you showed up to nothing. I would have been pissed.
cabbagescraps2 points2y ago
can someone explain to me how/why it’s a HIPPA violation??? i’ve been confused by it from the start /gen
Juliusmendoza1237 points2y ago
Actually it isn’t even a HIPAA violation because according to the OSHA under the CDC website it is required to tell everybody that was in contact with the person with covid.
HIPPAbot-1 points2y ago
It's HIPAA!
nevernot6131 points2y ago
lmaooo when i had covid my sm was giving updates on me in our group chat and listing me by name 😭😭
cryptidmother1 points2y ago
i think it’s sort of a grey area lol. like my store is pretty tight knit and so while my manager hasn’t specifically named anyone, we’ve known every time who it was lol. maybe the same situation with your store?
colonade179 points2y ago
I'm a shift, and someone in my store tested positive. SM refused to tell anyone of who it was. We had to figure it out by talking to each other.
ranbara [OP]5 points2y ago
As if we don't all have the right to know!!! My shifts can be shady sometimes and I wouldn't doubt if they were lying, but I also wouldn't put it past my manager to just keep us all in the dark for no reason either
ayy-shane7 points2y ago
you have a right to know if you were exposed to it but it's not necessary to tell you who the person is unless they feel comfortable sharing it, they might feel embarrassed or nervous that people (like you) would be angry with them
colonade172 points2y ago
They have an obligation to keep medical information private, but there's nothing that prevents us from choosing to disclose that information. But my SM was super pissed when he found out we were talking about it.
kitkat_7728 points2y ago
Check your local laws! I'm my state they are required to pay you a minimum 2hrs if you show up to work to find out no one told you not to come in.
ranbara [OP]3 points2y ago
I'll end up getting catastrophe pay for the week, so my hourly wage for 24 hours or something like that. I know that'll be taken care of, I'm just infuriated that my SM can't even manage to fucking call or text me that the store is closing. Better yet, any of my shifts bc they all knew I was out of town and wouldn't have heard right away. It's fucking absurd
Webshooter381 points2y ago
From what I've heard, Starbucks is being really good to their employees and paying them for their shifts when the store is closed for rona
ranbara [OP]6 points2y ago
I wouldn't say "really good"
Webshooter382 points2y ago
I don't know of any other companies that are paying their employees to miss work when the employee isn't even sick. As far as your local managers though, they're definitely not doing their best.
rudebii5 points2y ago
Maybe you meant "better than most?"
melodiic_3 points2y ago
lol no we only get "catastrophe pay" the first time our store closes. mine has closed twice now due to positive covid cases and we almost closed again just last week, we're scraping by with chronic understaffing. the second time we closed we all had to miss 2 weeks of pay or else apply for temporary UC. the bux can Definitely afford to give out catastrophe pay every time a store closes due to covid but they don't actually care about their employees' well-being or our safety, just their bottom dollar :)))))
drinkliquidclocks28 points2y ago
Ugh I'd be so annoyed that I woke up early for nothing lol. Do y'all get paid for the days you're closed?
ranbara [OP]7 points2y ago
I'll probably get catastrophe pay considering it's a covid case 😪😪 I'm more annoyed that I'm not allowed to know who it is so I can know if I worked with them, but I still want to get tested
cxbar3 points2y ago
you should get a call from your SM if you’ve been in contact and need to isolate. I’ve had multiple covid cases at my store and i’ve had to isolate every time. They SHOULD be on top of it - and there are partner resources if you feel like they are not. You have a right to know if you should isolate!
El_Gabe69-4202 points2y ago
I totally understand this sentiment.
My SM went out of her way to talk about next steps with partners who were exposed to the COVID cases we have had, but keeps the specific partner's identity secret for medical privacy reasons. If the partner is okay disclosing they got COVID, then they have the choice to tell us (which my store's afflicted partners did choose to disclose).
I of course would want to know, too, but to respect their medical privacy I would simply suggest asking your SM directly if you were exposed. I completely understand your disappointment/anger/etc with the situation because that's pretty garbage that you weren't told a damn thing ☹️
Klthomp01271 points2y ago
If it was someone you worked with your SM HAS to tell you because you would need to quarantine. I’d reach out but it’s likely you’re fine (according to Starbucks standard with how they handle Covid exposures).
colonade1721 points2y ago
Looks like your store got hit by corona and your manager forgot to tell you.
ranbara [OP]13 points2y ago
Idk how she could possibly forget to tell me and tell everyone else, I'm so fucking fed up with this job 🥲🥲🥲
Kyde_Drakes12 points2y ago
I would have been so mad! At least tell your people in a group message that you are closing. It’s such a simple thing to do.
juiceyluicy11 points2y ago
When we closed the stores for a month back in late March/most of April, the first day of my store being closed one of the closing baristas texted me saying, “hey, it looks like no one is here, do you know what’s happening?” And I had to tell them about the store being closed for an entire month bc the manager didn’t tell anybody besides those it affected the day we actually closed the store down (:
ranbara [OP]4 points2y ago
That is.. so fucked up. I'd be livid 😐😐😐 I'm mad asf right now and this is only for a week
silent_assassin223 points2y ago
love how your SM communicates with you guys! :)
ranbara [OP]4 points2y ago
I think I'm gonna call partner resources bc this is just.. so fucking absurd. Like I'm already over this job but this is the straw that broke the camel's back
silent_assassin222 points2y ago
absolutely dude!! i’d be as furious as you are. this is just totally and completely unacceptable. wouldn’t be surprised if you stopped showing up LMAO
lemonjuicepulp3 points2y ago
wish that was my store
ranbara [OP]4 points2y ago
I'm highkey glad we're closed because everyday is becoming more and more painful to deal with in there 🙂 it's an absolute nightmare and my SM doesn't make it any better, as you can see
lemonjuicepulp1 points2y ago
Honestly same. Been desperate for any job I can get to leave the hell hole
the_price_is_right962 points2y ago
I would pitch a damn fit and tell them they are paying me for at least 3 hours of work because I drove over there. And if the don't want to fix it, I'll just go to the department of labor.
randomhoe9991 points2y ago
This literally just happened to me today and I had to walk home in 35 degree weather
