HELP! Partner Hub useless! Ice bin standards??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RobotProphetWrites
If you care about food safety in your store, maybe you can help me.

I have been made "food safety ambassador" of my store and have been asked to help the other partners (and manager) be more educated on health regarding food safety.

My store has an ice bin in the counter between the blenders and my team has been doing a good job closing the lid in between drinks. But they have placed the wire basket that holds the blender lids on top of the ice bin cover for easier access while making frappuccinos.

Because the basket has holes the water and milk residue from the rinsed lids leaks onto the ice bin cover creating a lake of slimy, tinted water on the cover. I understand that Starbucks ice bins are made to prevent liquid from leaking into them, but I'm concerned that this will happen anyway with how much liquid there is.

I have tried putting the basket somewhere else, but my team can't break the habit even when I tell them not to. I have also searched the updated (2021) Food Safety Manual and SCEMM (Store Cleaniliness Equitpment Manual) on the hub for any explicit directions to NOT PLACE anything on the ice bin covers, but all it says is "close the cover" to prevent possible cross contamination from falling in and to empty and clean the ice bin if this does happen.

I'm so frustrated because I really care about my new position but I have no proof to back me up. Any advice or links would be much appreciated, thank you.

As much as it sounds unpalatable, I don’t think it’s breaking any food safety guidelines. Every in-counter ice bin I’ve ever seen is installed in such a way that there’s about a 1 inch lip that’s raised above the counter, and the ice bin cover fits over that in such a way that any liquid will flow down and onto the counter, not the lip.

Yeah, i was afraid of that 😰 I spent hours trying to Google the food code guidelines for my state/county--I even tried the FDA website--but I can't find anywhere that says to not put anything on the ice bin. Maybe I should contact my dm??

I was always told that nothing except for the ice scoops could be stored on top of the bin. I'll try to remember to look tomorrow and see if I can find it.

Check the store cleanliness and machine maintenance book. I think I saw something about the ice bin in that, so it may specify.
