“Hold on, let me check it...yeah, look at this. LOOK AT THIS. I said no foam, now I HAVE TO hold up the line. My body CANT DIGEST FOAM. No...I don’t want a refund. Can you just give me one of those free drink cards? You don’t have any? YES YOU DO YOURE MAKING ME HOLD UP THE LINE.”
it’s literally just milk with air in it. You can’t digest foam? No, you mean you can’t digest milk. You know what you definitely can’t digest? My fist in your mouth.
voidgremlin291 points2y ago
vast majority of starbucks customers couldn't claw their way out of a wet paper sack.
torpac00236 points2y ago
this lady told me she NEEDED her drink made breve bc she “can’t have milk” —- in the nicest tone i could muster i said it’s half and half. half milk half milkier milk. she was dumbfounded
pres_ofcanada19 points2y ago
Maybe she meant to say carbs?
moon_light52310 points2y ago
Then that would be heavy cream lol half and half still has carbs in it cause of the milk that’s in there (my moms obsessed with keto 😂)
pres_ofcanada1 points2y ago
Late reply but our half & half doesn’t have carbs
mernam11 points2y ago
Lmao once my bf got Starbucks for his coworkers and one of them said she thinks hers was made with milk instead of half and half. And that she can’t have milk. And she was like my tummy will tell me later. I was like....she can’t drink milk but she can drink half and half...? Pretty sure that’s worse. How do people not know it’s milk lmao
Fit-Nefariousness4129 points2y ago
Someone told me that half and half wasn’t pasteurized and your body can’t digest milk correctly.
Bertrandjet8 points2y ago
To provide some context: the more fat content in milk, the lower lactose content there is. So what they were probably TRYING to say is that they can’t have milk with a lower fat content than half and half... but ew. Those are the choices you’re making?
FfierceLaw95 points2y ago
I told this old lady who was complaining about the wait that the barista was meticulously removing every bubble with a spoon one at a time because she had requested steamed milk with no foam. The wand works by blowing hot air! If you don’t want foam order something without steamed milk, like coffee and cream.
kmoonster25 points2y ago
Protip if you don't use it already-- aerate for less time, and when you reach temp take the pitcher and give it 2-3 small, sharp taps on the counter and let it sit for 30 seconds or so. You can then scoop most of the foam off in the pitcher before you pour. The foam will head and make a nice separation from the body of the milk in the pitcher.
You do have to steam a bit extra milk, just as a heads up.
King_Spamula19 points2y ago
At this point, I've just stopped aerating for no foam drinks
jas0nd3an16 points2y ago
Yeah. It’s literally just the extra milk. Screw wasting time and effort on no foam drinks. Just pour to the next size up, or max for venti. Steam and then just hold the foam back with the spoon as you pour. This ten times easier. And the company isn’t missing four ounces of milk/foam. They’ll survive.
Used_Thought467210 points2y ago
Honestly I’m a barista and also a no foamer (mostly because it’s not made correctly and the weird large bubbles taste weird and I hate the texture) just aerate for a literal second and let that bad boy steam itself. Should just have hot milk.
hellopie72 points2y ago
I also sometimes just put it on WARM instead of the normal temp.
G37_is_numberletter92 points2y ago
Had a lady yell at a coworker cause the chocolate almond milk espresso came with blonde and according to her, that was our fault when she didn’t order it without blonde espresso and then when we remade it, it didn’t look right to her cause the almond milk and the chocolate were separated and she goes hey why is the chocolate all at the bottom? I wanted the chocolate almond milk!
Lady. No one has chocolate almond milk. Get out of my face and lose the attitude when you’re lucky you got your shoes on the right feet.
drinkliquidclocks30 points2y ago
I have had so many customers ask if we have chocolate almond milk??? Like almond milk flavored chocolate? And they refused to have normal almond milk with chocolate syrup...
Kitty_Queenx33 points2y ago
This is most likely because in store you can purchase chocolate almond milk. Tbh I thought thats what yall were using. This is why I read this subreddit so I don't cause a ruckus at starbucks trying to order a drink wrong lol!!
Sisyphus66 [OP]10 points2y ago
You a g for that
Higgins_is_Here18 points2y ago
Our sign says "CHOCOLATE ALMOND MILK" with the "shaken espresso" in smaller letters above the two options. I've had several people ask for the chocolate almond milk and I'm like... what?
drinkliquidclocks6 points2y ago
The customers I had were before that drink even came out, I'm still confused 😭 she was wanting chocolate flavored almond milk in her normal coffee
spookyasparagus57 points2y ago
they actually discontinued the free drink cards
Sisyphus66 [OP]27 points2y ago
Thank you now I have an answer for people
4filth12 points2y ago
oh no.......
iStealSharpies4 points2y ago
No way... really??
Bryancreates2 points2y ago
Like the $4 preloaded cards? I was still getting the paper cards 3 years ago before I left and they’d been discontinued for like 4 years before that. Not sure how they were still in circulation but maybe some license stores still had them.
jae4591 points2y ago
My store is still able to get some?? I swear like a month ago we got some since my SSV opened the till I was assigned to add more (we ran out)
[deleted]1 points2y ago
[deleted]
dthomp08061 points2y ago
Really? I wonder why
juiceyluicy1 points2y ago
I’m pretty sure it’s because any person who has access to opening the register and preloading those cards can just take them. At my store there was no way of .. keeping track of how many we had at any given time so.
dumbflatwhite1 points2y ago
my store has the “recovery cards” that basically get you a free drink up to $4 but they have to activated like a giftcard. we don’t give em out that often though.
schrosarus44 points2y ago
I had a customer make a big fuss because they had 1.5 ice cubes on a venti iced coffee that they had requested to have no ice. Sorry buddy, but we literally put ice INTO the coffee before we stick it into the fridge. Sometimes one gets through. They *literally* claimed that they were allergic to ice and that it was endangering their life. ....WTF?
sydbey_14 points2y ago
yea that frozen water is a real threat
schrosarus5 points2y ago
The worst part is, my shift manager at the time was too nice to her and her husband. So they became regulars who always ordered that. And they always got upset if there was ice in it.
hellopie78 points2y ago
Those are the type of regulars I'll always treat as crazy people and won't go the extra mile to connect with.
sydbey_7 points2y ago
me 2. It’s ridiculous to let them behave that way and then on top of it, encourage it
kmoonster6 points2y ago
On reg one day I had a customer order an iced chai with a bunch of modifiers. This was back in the days of the sharpie. I was writing and keeping up, I thought, until I heard "no foam".
Confused, I paused and apologized thinking they had switched to ordering a separate drink and I'd missed the switch somehow.
No...they were ordering an iced venti this/that chai with no foam! They were trying to ask for no bubbles (where any bubbles of substance would come for, I don't know, that drink is not shaken or aerated in any way). But yes, no bubbles-- and she threw a fit when I tried to clarify. At that point the person handling the bar just sort of winked and asked me to hand the cup over and she went through the modifiers one at a time as she made the drink. That was literally easier than having me try and write an encyclopedia on the side of the cup. No lie!
edit: this also reminds me of an entirely different situation in an entirely different job in which a ten-year-old tried to convince me that they were allergic to pancakes, and could they have waffles instead. That was another favorite-- fortunately, they were very polite about it.
schrosarus5 points2y ago
I had someone do that with iced chai’s too!!! In their defense though, our chai pump at the time was calibrated funny (read:incorrectly) so that it made a TON of bubbles when it was pumped into the cup with any kind of speed. So I knew where they were coming from, but it was still a strange request.
honestned41 points2y ago
Majority of Starbucks customers have 3 brain cells :)
drinkliquidclocks18 points2y ago
Does anyone know WHY people get no foam? Does foam have more fat or something? I've been a barista for 3 years now and I still have no idea what the purpose of no foam is
the_price_is_right9632 points2y ago
My best guess is they don't like the texture. But also, I know that a lot of people don't like it because foam means less overall drink. Like if you don't drink any of it, and the foam settles and melts, it will cause it to look only half filled. But if there is no foam, they get more overall drink. Except people who get no foam cappuccinos. Those people can get out.
kxnkycxrly1 points2y ago
I like wet caps fight me
the_price_is_right961 points2y ago
Wet is fine, no foam at all is a latte, not a cappuccino.
kxnkycxrly1 points2y ago
people at Dunkin’ like to argue that a wet cap is a latte and try to hand me just a heavy ass cup of steamed milk and espresso it’s annoying when people don’t know how to properly make one
KittenCatAttack21 points2y ago
The thing about foaming is, if you do it long enough, it creates a velvety texture with the milk. I just assume they have never had a delicious, foamy latte and just prefer their hot milk now. Heathens.
Sisyphus66 [OP]15 points2y ago
Idk maybe people don’t like combatting through the foam to get to the milk? I feel like they think they’re getting more for their money or something, even though in my experience it’s not much and just part of having a latte.
kmoonster13 points2y ago
The other reason I've run into is that some people seem to think less foam means more coffee.

No, I don't understand it either, since it's mixed in together, but... \\shrug/
renmort6 points2y ago
I *live* for foam but there was a partner at my old store who hated it - I think it was a texture thing. But I've also heard people say it makes them feel bloated, which i guess makes sense
iStealSharpies3 points2y ago
Idk I know most people think no foam = more drink. Some people don’t care for the texture of foam. But honestly, foam is delicious imo.
Used_Thought46723 points2y ago
Usually texture or the fact that a lot of places don’t really coach or care how the milk turns out and they are getting cappuccinos instead of lattes which is v different or the bubbles are too large and when you loose the creamy texture it’s just gross. I literally only get foam if I make it or I know the barista will make it right. To be fair though I also mostly drink iced to avoid this as well.
pourovers_first1 points2y ago
It's a texture thing for me, but I also hate the weird film on the roof of your mouth from any steamed drink that has any fat content, so I usually just get iced to save everyone the trouble.
LZARDKING11 points2y ago
I would literally not even respond to that. That’s literally one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard wow.
LightWhitePeaches11 points2y ago
I think id cry
idk_ijustgohard9 points2y ago
And here I am feeling like trash for being like can I get 🤏🏽 this much space in my cup of Caffe Verona for heavy cream ?
thehairqueen11 points2y ago
Omg your one of the easy ones! My heat melt for people like you💕 I find it cute when someone comes threw and Apologizes for there order ahead of time and then just asks for it xtra hot and nonfat milk If you guys only knew the drink request we get 😂
whycantibeamermaid4 points2y ago
When people ask for “one of those free drink cards” I immediately shut down.
idiotmlem4 points2y ago
Once when I was still a green bean, I handed a lady her drink at the window and she opened the lid, stuck her finger in EXTRA HOT DRINK, pulled it back out to reveal the scantest amount of foam on her fingers. "I said I wanted no foam, there's foam in the drink."
Sisyphus66 [OP]5 points2y ago
That’s Darwinism right there tbh
DieLawnUwU4 points2y ago
Customers that ask for dry lattes or wet cappuccinos need to help.
Cooch_21191 points2y ago
God someone ordered an EXTRA EXTRA wet cappuccino today god woman that’s literally just a latte
kxnkycxrly-1 points2y ago
No
seanoregano3 points2y ago
Customers will ask for no foam and then complain when they have to wait for us to remove it
Alternative_Blacks1 points2y ago
Love this kind of energy. Drink the milk and get out of my line.

Kyenne_Pepper12363 points2y ago
If I the customer can’t have milk they should have asked for non dairy milk like soy. Foam is literally milk with air bubbles in it. Y’all need to stop making excuses for being asses
[deleted]-47 points2y ago
[deleted]
Kyenne_Pepper12338 points2y ago
Mistakes happen, but that doesn’t give you the reason to be an ass or a jerk. If the customer didn’t ask or request for any non dairy option or didn’t request no foam that’s not on the barista. Even if a mistake was made that doesn’t mean be rude to the baristas.
[deleted]-14 points2y ago
[deleted]
givemeapples13 points2y ago
This doesn't even remotely relate to the foam conundrum
[deleted]0 points2y ago
[deleted]
Sisyphus66 [OP]47 points2y ago
I think I could be sympathetic to the customer if she hadn’t been so rude about it
[deleted]-63 points2y ago

badatlife1536 points2y ago
No foam doesn’t mean non-dairy, all of the milks/non-dairy substitutes will foam when steamed.
[deleted]-24 points2y ago
[deleted]
badatlife1553 points2y ago
I get that but what we as baristas are saying foam is literally from the milk, the bubbles that form when steaming, so you can’t be unable to digest the foam, but able to digest whatever milk product that the drink is made with. It’s like saying you can’t digest the crumbs of the bread you’re eating.
Js_On_My_Yeet38 points2y ago
If you're in pain everyday then stop drinking milk

The customer said they were allergic to foam which is idiotic. You then brought up your whole story and made it about you. Food allergies are serious, I agree. This post had nothing to do with food allergies or intolerances, you brought that up.
