Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Transferred to another store (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sad_Post0
Hey y'all, 237 here (SSV). Last year in November i transferred to a starbucks because i moved. I came from a really high performing store (Customer connection score was almost 50, super clean store, consistent clean plays, etc.) I had no option but this one store i'm currently at (other stores shift teams were fully staffed).

I'm just struggling to find any sort of consistency every day i come into work. I am a closing shift and i come in at 1. The store is rarely stocked, MOP isn't updated, dishes are piled high, backups aren't caught up. Then i get a 5 play and it's damn near impossible to get caught back up within an hour when there's a line to the street. Partners are trained incorrectly with bad habits (DTO making cold bar drinks, window person getting food, you know.) Partners are unreliable and call off without consequence. They can barely hold their own in a position. No one cares to rotate any product correctly. Inventory management is an absolute mess, either we have way way way too much of everything, or we're out of everything. Cleanliness lacks and we don't have consistent clean plays all the time. Cash management is not updated consistently, milk counts are seldom done, counts are never done. My SM doesn't really touch on most of these issues, and doesn't really hold any of the shifts accountable.

I'm just at a loss as to what to do to help. Maybe a shift meeting, to address some issues? I've touched on a few of them (Especially deployment issues and baristas not being able to hold their own) but no one reinforces it. To me so much is going wrong where i just don't know where to start. I'm only one person and i want people to have a better time when they come into work. But if everyone isn't on the train we can't go anywhere.

As DTR I can’t stand passively when we’re short handed and I know no one is heating the food I need at the window or that Frappuccino we’ve needed forever while the drive through sits is right there in the blender with the empty cup in front of it. I wash my hands every time. You say I have bad habits I say I have work ethic and a sense of urgency

You're making up for the fact that the DTO person is making drinks instead of getting your food. The whole process is simple if everyone is doing what they should be doing.

what youre saying is valid and ideal but, if others are falling behind, not fulfilling their positions properly, etc. the ideal is no longer attainable. consistency is really important but becomes difficult to maintain when theres a million things going on and you’ve been waiting on a Tr ice water for an obscene amount of time. of course theres no excuse for these bad habits when things are manageable and less hectic (i feel as though some people use the bad habits you described as a scapegoat to get out of talking w the customer). otherwise, attempting to lighten the load for your partners during a rush demonstrates your proclivity towards adaptability and prioritization (drive times 🤠🤠)

personally, i dont run to grab food when on dtr but i can understand why someone would feel drawn to do so

The point of the post is rather about my general frustrations of the store rather than arguing about what a "bad habit" is, as i was simply referring to "breaking routine."

DTR is a planted position and should be connecting with customers while there is a wait. Look at the playbuilder

I know the feeling. I'm a night shift and deal with similar issues. Talk about it in a meeting, but make sure you're recording the whole thing. It's a safety thing in case they try to retaliate. If nothing changes, talk to your district manager

How did you raise customers connection, my manager wants me to fix them

my manager made us Answer the DT "Welcome to starbucks, my name is ______, can i get you started with a (insert food item here)? We also greeted every person that came inside and cafe bar had to talk to customers as they made drinks. And if it was super busy , you'd call drinks like this: "Andrea, i am starting your white mocha" or whatever. Everyone was really good with routine and stuff. Baristas knew their shit
