Hi everyone ! Late last week I had an interview for a shift supervisor. Honestly I could hardly call it an actual interview, more of a quick few questions discussing my previous job and why I’d want to work for Starbucks and how soon I could start. But she said they don’t usually hire outside shift supervisors. That you start as a barista first. Which is weird because they say on the ads in store and online hiring specifically for shift supervisors I have 3 years of food and beverage management exp behind me. She said in order to do that she would have to speak to her district manager and schedule another interview. I called today and she said she is still waiting on hearing back from her district manager.
I was just wondering if this was standard protocol. Any advice or input would help!

it comes down to manager discretion. speaking as a new SSV and barista of 2 years, outside hires for SM/SSV are super rare and it's an incredibly steep learning curve to have to learn and master all of the beverages and quality standards plus all of the barista duties so you can coach your baristas when they need help and keep them efficient and on track, and then also balance learning SSV responsibilities. i tell green bean baristas that that job is a 6 month learning curve, lmao.
so yeah, that sounds pretty standard. best of luck, though! having that much experience behind you should give you a bit of a foot in the door, just as long as you're willing to be flexible and learn new ways of managing!

Thank you. I just was getting a little nervous. I have another job offer that I don’t really want at all. I have to let them know tomorrow, but I don’t want to say no if I’m just being blown off by Starbucks. I much prefer the Starbucks job over the other one. That’s understandable though. I figure there is a lot to learn as a barista first before becoming a supervisor. I think I could handle both at the same time but who knows 😂 Hoping my prior exp. helps me

yeah i mean outside hires definitely happen, one of my favorite supervisors in the past was an outside hire! go with your gut, but i wouldn't say the delay is necessarily a bad sign. sometimes it just seems to take my manager a few days to get admin stuff done when it involves our district manager 😅 definitely keep checking up and letting them know you're interested if you want to keep pursuing it, good luck!

I honestly think it’s beneficial to start as a barista. I’m an SM and if I wanted to hire an outside ssv, I would likely ask one of my colleagues (I have such a supportive district and we really work as a team, I’m lucky, sometimes that’s rare) if they could train the SSV and their store so my new shift could come in and immediately build a leadership rapport with my team, rather than be seen as a total newbie.
I would totally be transparent with my team and tell them they were being hired and trained at a different store before coming to ours. I just think that separating the training (which from barista skills to ssv could take a few weeks of course) would be beneficial for team morale and so the shift could come into a new store feeling completely confident.

meh. i mean, a couple of our shift supervisors were outside hires and my manager is looking to bring on another ssv from outside as well. if they have good qualifications then i don’t see why not BUT it will be difficult to learn all the duties of a barista and ssv in as short time
