Do you make a decent living at SB?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cortnelius
Hey all,
I hope it's ok I'm posting this here. Saw similar posts and if it's not allowed, feel free to delete.
So I'm basically wondering if it's feasible to earn a decent living working at SB. It's important to note I'm in CA so the cost of living is high.
I recently suffered an injury that has left me unable to work my usual desk jobs. I need something that requires standing and movement. I have plenty of retail and food experience, plus management. I hear SB doesn't hire managers very often from outside so I figure I may need to work my way up.
TLDR; Does anyone living in a metropolitan area make enough money to pay their bills and go on the occasional vacation? Would love to hear any actual salary ranges for any positions as well.
Thank you in advance!

No.

Definitely not enough to live on. I’m here for the benefits not the pay.

absolutely not, i make 50 cents over minimum wage. every single person at my store either works 2-3 different jobs or has rich parents paying their bills

Yikes. Disheartening knowing how big of a corporation they are. I can't say I'm surprised though.

I don’t live in a place where cost of living is high and I still can’t afford a living off of Starbucks so

I'm living on SSV pay and im seriously worried I can't keep going like this🙂 (also coming to you from CA, QC)

Oof. Good to know. Thank you for replying!

Definitely no and because I haven't seen it in the comments yet I'll add that a lot of stores are quite stingy on hours. It feels very all or nothing in that department.

Yeah you MOST DEFINITELY aren’t gonna be able to have your own apartment. I know a lot of SSV who work 2 to 3 jobs and have 2 or 3 roommates and can barely afford to pay off their car note. 🤷🏿♂️ and the cost of living here is fairly low

Oh goodness, thank you for your reply!

When I was a barista, I did not. When I was a shift I barely got by. I am a three year partner and managed to work up to SM, which is a lot more liveable... but still not a ton of money. ASM is a bit of a sweet spot, where you’re salaried at a pretty smallish amount but can still make overtime if you work over 40. Which is a fun, small period of time where you can work a lot if the labor is needed in your district.
Baristas in my area make $15 now, when I was a barista I made $9-10. Shifts in my area make $19 and some change. I think it really depends on where you live.

By most indexes barista, and even supervisor pay is less than a living wage. Store manager is where the pay starts to get good.

my licensed store in CA is paying 18$ an hour starting w/ great security and 35-40 hours per week. its a blessing really
Cortnelius [OP]1 points2y ago
That's fantastic as a start! What does a "licensed" store mean? Sorry if that's silly. I wouldn't know how to tell the difference.
kuyabijvn2 points2y ago
kinda like a franchise. the company I work for pays corporate starbucks for the rights to have a store in their facility. starbucks’ inside of grocery stores are also licensed stores

I make $15.75, work 35 hours a week and only spend about 25% of my gross pay on rent. I’m not in California though.

HELL NO!!!!

I live in NC and I couldn’t make it as a sole earner, but it’s doable with my spouse & I both working full time. I’m an SSV but my total monthly income is almost exactly equal to my rent at our one bedroom apartment 🙃 (I make 12.70/ per hour and Starbucks considers full time to be 32 hours - I average about 35 a week)

Nope, prepare to have to choose between rent or food
honeykoala153 points2y ago
but don’t worry! They give you a free food and drink every day for now to make sure you don’t go hungry during covid! Wouldn’t want to see the people who they don’t pay enough to afford food not be able to buy food during these difficult times!! 🙃

The only way I know my friend who lives here in Cali is making it is because her husband works and makes decent money so she can afford to stay working at Starbucks. She also has her own small side business, so no I’m not sure you could live in Cali off Starbucks pay unfortunately
Cortnelius [OP]5 points2y ago
This is really helpful, thank you. I'll look into the husband thing next lol

Thank you for the thoughtful comments that were left here. Sad/ interesting that they pay so low after what I've heard good service managers make at Mc'D's etc. Really appreciate the feedback!
