i’m using this to settle a debate- do starbucks baristas deserve to be tipped, or should people assume that we are paid well enough, we don’t “need” tips? for example, this person also thinks you don’t need to tip if you’re picking up delivery food/drinks at a restaurant because “what do i tip the hostess for, all they did was hand me my order”
thank you in advanced, all opinions are welcome, i just wanted some insight & a conversation about this :)

If its a service... you tip... nail tech > service > tip.... server > service > tip.... cable guy > service > tip.... barista > service > tip

Yes. Should the pay be high enough that tips don’t make or break a barista paying their bills? Also yes.

Honestly, There are several ways to look at it. Im sure ppl who dont tip, don't do it because it feels like any other fast food place. We don't normally tip at Burger Kind, Taco Bell, Chick Fil A...etc. Drinks made solely with zero modifications...meh. Tic Toc drinks or those with lots of modifications/ additions and changes definitely deserve to be tipped. I can't say that I 100% tip based on my logic ^, but if the person at the window asks if my dog wants a pup cup....they get 2 tips...so keep doing that 😁. I've also been known to pay on the mobile app but leave a $20 just cause 🤷♀️. Baristas at my local 3....are slammed all of the time and work very hard. I tip based on my special requests and kindness to my baby girl 🦮.
Question for a barista...do you see mobile tips immediately or how do those get added? What do you consider a good (normal) tip amount? Whom all gets a division of the tip jar?
sweetpotatoqkween11 points2y ago
so tips are done every week- we take the total tips made for the week and divide it by the total hours worked to get the hourly tip wage. Each barista gets that hourly rate x however many hours they worked that week.
The mobile tips used to be pulled from our registers every night and put into bags with the cash tips but now they go directly into our paychecks.
We can’t see when mobile tips come or how much someone tips
I’m grateful for all tips from a penny to a twenty. I don’t expect to be tipped by everyone every time but I do think we deserve tips. I frequent a local coffee shop and sometimes I don’t tip, sometimes it’s my change, sometimes a few dollars, sometimes a $20.

Starbucks serves custom based beverages to order. We are not fast food. I love explaining this to the customer that orders a venti pink drink double blended with vanilla sweet cream cold foam and then complains about their minute wait in the drive thru.
Baristas also do wayyyy more than just serve beverages and food. We have to complete tasks before breaks like running trash, doing dishes, cleaning restrooms, etc.
So, yea I’d say we all deserve to be tipped.

Yes, my tips help me pay for groceries. Even if we get paid """"enough"""" we are still providing a service they cannot do on their own and Have To Be Nice To Customers No Matter What
arianamar963 points2y ago
Depends, because Starbucks barely pays more than minimum wage in their area then customers should tip but if Starbucks was actually paying decent wages then no. Part of the reason it’s not common to tip in some other parts of the world is because restaurants believe in paying their employees a decent wage. When a company pays workers the least they can then it should be more common to tip, however no job should be designed in a way where workers rely on tips because then that means the business isn’t paying well
IHateThisDamnWebsite3 points2y ago
They do. Should the pay also be higher so that baristas wouldn’t have to rely on tips? Also yes.

i think that shifts shouldn’t be tipped. y’all already get payed way more than us. tips should go to baristas and only baristas.
Adorable_Track_8276 points2y ago
they only get paid $2 more and they have a lot more responsibilities. idk about your store but at my store the shifts are on bar and doing their shift duties, if anything they deserve more tips.
AvoFromCado3 points2y ago
We get paid a few dollars more and have a ton of extra responsibilities and are on the floor with the baristas most of our time on top of dealing with any angry customers.... we absolutely do deserve tips, and I think you severely under appreciate your shifts☹️
mthrowaway3112 points2y ago
we get paid a little more than you do but do a lot more. please work the SSV position before saying this because i bust my ass as a supervisor for $2 more than you. tell your shifts in person you feel that way instead of anonymously on here and let us know how it goes.
