should I call off? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dwightshru
tomorrow, it’ll be 14 days of me working nonstop with no day off. why? people keep getting “sick” and calling off and i’m the person my manager goes to, to ask to pick up the shifts. and of course, I say yes. and I guess i’ve been working so much that I forgot to ask for saturday off (my moms bday).

i’ve only been working at starbucks for about 4 months now and i’ve never called off. i’m afraid to call off because I work a closing shift on a saturday and I know what it’s like to be understaffed on a busy day. I asked one guy to switch shifts with me, he said no bc it’s bad for his mental health to close on weekends. I asked another girl, no, she doesn’t do closing shifts. another girl, no, she has homework, another one? nope, another job. and it’s sucks bc when everyone asks me i’m available.

i’m really tired and I don’t want to miss my moms bday. i’m planning on asking one girl to stay an extra hour to help close. what should I do?

just call off, you’re already doing way too much over capacity. you shouldnt be working that much, if your manager cant find coverage from partners in your store, they need to be picking up the phone and looking for help from borrowed partners. thats the whole reason why we have districts and the ability to work at any starbucks location when they need the help.

I'm pretty sure your SM can get in trouble for making you work all 7 days in a calendar week... you might to look into that

Yea you’re not suppose to work more than 7 days in a row.

Call out. There are more important things than starbucks. They might have a bad night but they'll manage. If you've never called out in four months and you're always covering for other people then you're not about to get in trouble for attendance issues. And remember to say no when you dont want to cover a shift, it really is okay.

I used to work for a company (way worse than Starbucks) where I basically had these exact habits. One day I read this message on someone's instagram post "Friendly reminder that if you don't feel good, you' re sick, or mentally drained and have an extensive/ demanding job- don't be afraid to call out. If you have issues doing so, just remember if something were to happen to you your job would be replacing your position in less than 24 hours." That week I quit that job and decided I'd try to work at Starbucks because I knew my life would be better if I did. And as better as Starbucks is then that company... I still carry that exact message with me every single day. Every. Single. Day.
At the end of the day they are a corporation still and they will carry on without you. You, on the other hand, are a precious and fragile human who deserves to be protected at all costs.

14 days??? Boo. Your manager needs to support you more. Tell her you’re not showing up ✌🏼

I had one barista work nearly an entire month no days off, and she even broke her hand on bar! Boss kept calling her in and she kept coming in.

Call out. It’s not worth the risk of injury because your over worked.

You never know when it will be your moms last birthday! Call off enjoy those around you before it’s to late!

You should never be working over 40 hours a week and/or 7 days in a row. I would even hesitate working more than 5, because this company is not worth killing your body over.

If it's been consistent, and your SM knows you've been working that much, I would call PCC because they can get in serious trouble for doing that.

Call off. They’re not supposed to allow you to work more than 7 days without a day off and after 14 days you deserve a whole week off honey. They will be fine without you - it’s your mom’s birthday and that time together is so much more important than coffee.

Call out and proceed to set up some serious boundaries with your coworkers and employers. You are getting taken advantage of.

just call off and you don't need to get too into detail. one of my breaking points there was missing out on something with my mom and I worked clopens and every weekend day. I had to come in anyway and when I got there we had extra people and they were standing around doing nothing, I was so pissed. just do it, one time and they can't fire you.

100% call out! You are busting your ass for people who would never do the same for you & a company who will never do the same for you so absolutely call out! Take the day off and enjoy it with your mom & the closing team will just have to have a bad night and manage like you and your other partners did when you closed & were short staffed. Don’t bend over backward & go above and beyond for a company that will never be loyal to you because you are replaceable in their eyes, take the day and call out.

this is my personal opinion, but i wouldn’t call out. but if you really need to, go for it. just, you don’t always have to be the yes guy, you are allowed to say no (unless you really need the money). the thing here is, we tend to say yes to someone when they “really need coverage” but they’re always the first to say no when you need coverage too. know your limits, listen to your body and mind before picking up a shift when your manager asks. much love!

Find someone to switch shifts or, if you are lucky, just pick up the shift for you. Especially if one of those who was sick is back to work within that two week time span.
