263- partner clocking out for the last time a couple of days ago. From stepping up into a shift role and then back down to a barista role while at Starbucks I have some words of wisdom for both positions.
As a shift, please communicate with your baristas. There isn’t anything worse than a shift supervisor that goes to the back of house for long periods of time and doesn’t communicate at all. It’s better for baristas to know what you’re doing and what your plan is than for them to be in the dark. Also, defend your baristas against anybody. Customers, store manager, district manager. You are the best defendant for your baristas and you have all of the ability to make them feel safe or scared at work.
As a barista, don’t ever take Starbucks seriously enough to be angry. I know we have all experienced awful customers, and it’s frustrating when it happens. But, the earlier you can recognize that the customer doesn’t deserve to occupy more than a second of your time, the easier it is to let those moments go.
And for everyone working at Starbucks, never be afraid to take a step away from a hectic moment, take a deep breath, say “fuck this”, and find a new career. This coffee isn’t worth the things we go through for these entitled customers.
Love you guys and the good memories I’ll have forever
