Barista Training tips pls (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by naadzzz
Hi my sm asked me to train a new person when the new schedule comes out, i told her i’m not even a barista trainer yet so she set me up with some training later this week.

I’ve worked here for 2 years now and am a coffee master, but i’m nervous because i have adhd and i feel like i’m all over the place when explaining things 😂 I know they give us a training plan and stuff, but i want to make sure i’m as helpful as i can be outside of the plan!

any tips would be very helpful for my first time training someone

BIGGEST tip I can give as a seasoned trainer is to have your trainee show YOU how to do things after you’ve demonstrated.

After demonstrating some basic stuff like milk steaming and such, prompt them with questions when making their first drinks:

“How many pumps of syrup are going to go in this tall vanilla latte?”

“What do we always do after we steam milk?” (Clean the wand)

“Whenever we make a mess we _______” (wipe our station)

Have them verbally respond to you before doing the action so you can correct them before they make a mistake and it becomes muscle memory.

Let them get used to repeating the same steps verbally to you over and over again. Even if it’s annoying. Eventually they should be able to walk you through drinks without needing to be prompted. The more thorough you are in the little habits like wiping the steam wand, wiping the station, swirling the sauces with the espresso, the more prepared they’ll be.

It also helps to give them cheat sheets to study! I’ve posted some $1

Btw I also have adhd and training can be kinda hectic especially because you don’t always have the ability to train on bar because you’ll get in the way in a rush. You’ll likely end up jumping around in the training plan. You can always take quick breaks in the back room to go over what you’ve learned so far and remember to ask them how confident they are in different areas to assess where you can spend more time training! Let them know it’s totally ok to be overwhelmed at first and you’re there to help even after training is over.
