Urgency and Inspiration (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Psychedelic_Doughnut
My manager and I recently had a PDC about me developing to become a shift supervisor, and one thing she wanted to see from me is a sense of urgency develop, and us to be able to have good drive thru times and great customer connections. And it’s easy to do this myself, but the trouble is she wants me to basically inspire others into doing the same things as myself. I work night shift typically, and it’s really difficult to put any get up and go or get any high energy out of the people I work with. What advice or suggestions do you guys have? I need all I can get.

Barista trainer here wanting a promotion, too. I don’t work nights, so I don’t know you situation exactly, but I’ve found that being positive and upbeat myself really does rub off on others. We do a lot of, “Hey, our time is 1:01, how low can we go in the next hour?” Take bets on it. “Hey, we’re at 59! Can we get to 55? Y’all are killing it!” So much encouragement and turning it into a game almost. Even simple things like, “Yeah, girl! You MAKE that latte! Go, go!” High fives all around after a rush. One time will not be enough to get people on board, but persistent positive reinforcement DOES pay off if you want to create a more energetic culture.

Yeah.... good luck with that. Nothing more annoying than a shift hounding you on DT times.
