Can I get fired for using my discount on family even when I’m the one paying? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GingerMic
A while back, my shift told me that if I was going to use my discount, I had to be the one paying. So I started paying. But the next time I did it and I was paying, she pulled me aside in front of my coworkers and told me that I wasn’t allowed to use my discount for family orders at all, even when my order is included.

Is this true? I don’t know if I can trust her honestly. She borderline harasses me at work so I’m here to see if it’s actually true or not :/

Quick Edit - Other coworkers have used their discount for family members while they were working in front of her and she didn’t say anything. I’m pretty sure she just doesn’t like me.

EDIT 2 - I do not use my partner food or drink on my families items. That’s against policy. I use it on my items, and pay for their discounted items on my order.

That's not true... if you're paying, it's none of her business who the drinks are actually for

You can buy whatever drinks for whoever you want when you aren’t working. If you are on shift, then you can’t do that. So if your family comes in during your time on the clock you can’t use your discount and buy their drinks. But outside of that you’re free to buy whatever, whenever.

That’s what I thought, but my shift won’t leave me alone about it, and ignores those who are blatantly breaking the rule by using their discount for family on the clock... Should I report this to ethics? It seems like I’m being singled out at this point.

I would go to your sm if you haven’t yet. Don’t assume that they’re aware you’re being singled out. Your sm has more power to tell them to cut it out or possibly schedule you with this particular shift less. That’s at least for this issue. As far as the “borderline harasses” you part that might be worth going to ethics and compliance if 1) your sm doesn’t make them stop and 2) you can document and prove the harassment has occurred

Thanks for the advice! I’ll go to my sm and hopefully she’ll have a chat with my shift.

I often get a drink when I leave for the day and will grab one for my significant other (that I pay for while using my discount). It’s never been an issue.

I was just going to say the same thing

My district manager said when I started as long as you are the one paying it's okay.

As long as you're paying up front not an issue. Former Supervisor checking in here. Unless things have drastically changed.

Other then the free drink and food item when you’re not working because of Covid, nothings changed. I just read through the entire Partner Discount policy as well, so I’m fully prepared for the next time my shift gets passive aggressive with me.

This happened to me too I was buying drinks for me an and an ex partner that this one shift lead hated for some reason. She would constantly tell me I can't use my discount for her etc etc etc. I texted my SM and she said there's no problem with it as long as I'm paying the one paying. As long as you aren't handing out your discount to strangers or to your family or friends and then they pay, you should be fine. Sounds like she just doesn't like you for whatever reason

That’s what I thought, thanks. Just read through the entire Partner Discount Policy as well, so I’m fully prepared for when she gets passive aggressive with me again.
